Speed and Strength Excercises For Hurling

    Hey guys,

I would greatly appreciate any advise on ways to improve speed and strength for field sports such as hurling.

I'm 5'10, 11 and a half stone, with good stamina, however my upper body strength is piss poor and my speed (acceleration) is below average.

I've read a lot online about ways to improve these two aspects of my physic but there's so many different views it's quite confusing. I was wondering if anyone would recommend any good strength/plyometric (sp?) plans.

I was once a good player but I've gone backwards quite a bit (mostly due to my lack of strength). Really focused on making a change, I just need to know where to begin.

All I have atm is dumbbells and a skipping rope. I intend to get a pull up bar over the weekend. Then in September I'll be back in college and have access to a good gym!

hurling is a power/strength sport (unlike football which requires far more aerobic fitness)
its all about speed, power onto the ball
speed and power with the ball
and strength and power in the tackle/fielding

allied to that a load of practice with a ball and wall

funny, I play hurling and I'm the same height yet over 2 stone heavier than you

you need to build a base level of strength for hurling using:
    squats
    deadlifts
    bench
    pullups

I would recommend spending a bit of money to get a proper training program and advice. PM me and I'll give you contact details for someone who has trained some of the top GAA players in the country
