In the Playpen: MavisDavis

Next up in the playpen is MavisDavis, eh?
Oscar Wilde once said that genius is born - not paid. This explains why MavisDavis isn't yet rich.
He also said "I think God in creating MavisDavis somewhat underestimated his abilities". That may not be word-for-word. >.>

This lady doesn't grace C&H as much with her presence these days, but if you don't know her then you're a whipper-snapper and show some respect for your elders, why don't you? :P
Give it up for the one and only, the next Chief Justice, missus MavisDavis.

You may now cross-examine the witness.

Yes, it's called the UCD Engineering building. I've seen you there. ;)

    Favourite boards forum?
    Why, C&H of course!

Who the hell are you? :p
I'm MavisDavis, I've been on the Playpen list longer than you've been posting, young 'un, so be nice!

would you support a European superstate?
No, seems like a bad idea to me.

what is your educated opinion on Michelle Bachman?
I don't know enough about her to have much of an opinion, but I don't want her to be President of the Yanks.

    Will the US default?
The US will do whatever it damn well likes. As ever.

    PS3 or XBox 360?
PS3, but only for PS1 games, really.

    1,2 or 3?
    2.

    Where is the love?
It's lurking around here somewhere. It's like Davidius, you can't always see it, but it never goes away!

    Favourite Chipper?
I'm not really a huge fan of chippers.

    Tesco, Dunnes or Super?
    Dunnes.

    How's Canada?
It's good, eh. Looking forward to getting home, though!

Are you still planning on joining the navy?
    Only if you are. ;)

    jumpguy wrote: »

    Pirate sharks.

What's your favourite cereal? Nobody cares if you don't like cereal. Nobody likes cereal, it's just the lazy person's breakfast.
I only recently overcame my fear of cereal, so I'll say Cornflakes.

Can you deal with boredom well?
As well as the next person, I suppose.

    How d'you make your tea?
Quite strong, just milk. Sugar does not belong in tea.

    Coca Cola or Pepsi?
    Coca Cola.

    Favourite branch of Law?
So far, it's Criminal. I haven't really done much of it yet, though. That's for next year..

What's the plan when you graduate? You gonna be like, in courthouses and stuff?
I genuinely don't know. I've years to figure that out.

    Favourite historical case (in law)?
Donoghue v Stevenson. The awkward moment when you find a snail in your ginger beer.

    Tyranny or anarchy?
    Tyranny.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,263 ✭✭✭MavisDavis

    Favourite thing about Canada?
The people - they're an interesting bunch!

What do you miss about Ireland (generic tea bags answer is not accepted!)
My mammy, my dog and The Sunday Times.

Where in the world would you love to go?
I'd love to go on a road-trip through the southern states of America. In a sports car..

    Any scars?
A few. I've one on my knee from general childhood running about and one on my chin from falling out of bed a few years back.

    Any strange injuries?
My knee gets a bit click-y from time to time - diagnosis, doc?:P

Most embarrassing thing to ever happen to you?
There are a few I can think of that'd have a tough fight to win that title, but I'll go with the generic calling a teacher "mam". :P

    Any strange piercings?
    Nope, just my ears.

    Craziest thing you've ever done?
Going to Canada for three months alone.

    You are joining the Navy?
Haha, I'm not. That's an old joke between myself, Cheesefiend and Almostnever.

    Why?
Why wouldn't you want to join The Navy? ;)

Are you joining the Irish navy or royal navy?
    The DLS Navy. :P

If the former doesn't that sound like an awful idea?

Did you support the Iraq war?
    No, and I still don't.

Would you support military strikes to protect the environment?
No, that seems like it would be rather counter-productive.

Do you support NATOs intervention in Afghanistan?
No, but something has to be done to end that "war".

These ones have an unusual speech pattern and enjoy a local deliacy called "poutine" - which consists of chips, gravy and cheese curds. Ew.

Would you recommend that if possible someone should get away for the summer?
Yes. It's nice to be away from Ireland (and to be able to get a job and some work experience!). I'm not sure I'd recommend going somewhere alone, though. I wouldn't mind travelling alone, just not spending 3 months in one place with not very many friends!

What do you miss most about Ireland?
You didn't make any stipulations like QoL, so I can finally say Barry's tea bags!

Are you looking forward to getting back to college?
Definitely. I miss it so much!

What's your favourite thing about your course/UCD?
My course is really interesting if I actually get into it, plus my classmates are lovely. I love the campus media in UCD - I've met some absolute legends through it.

What country do you want to visit the most?
I'd really like to go to Cuba right now. I'll probably change my mind by tomorrow, though.

Is the The Mavis Davis Safe Sex Video available on DVD yet?
No, but I'm hoping it'll be out on Bluray in time for the Christmas rush.

I do Law with Politics in UCD.

    Favourite TV Station ?
I don't really have a tv at college, but Channel Four or RTE 1 when I'm home.

Last piece of clothing you washed ?
    My work clothes.

    Gaeilge, yay or nay ?
    Yay, gan amhras ar bith!

Ha, you must be near where my friend comes from then. When she was first talking about that we thought she had somehow heard of poteen :pac:

So where exactly in Canada are you?
    St. John's in Newfoundland.

I'm currently watching Supernanny, do you want children and if/when they turn into little brats how would you discipline them?
It's not something I've given much consideration to, but I think so, yes. As for discipline, nothing bates the wooden spoon! :p

    Favourite hair colour?
Ginger, obviously. Probably brown, really, though.

    Favourite eye colour?
I'll say green because mine are green.:P

Who should be a boardsie couple?
    Mavidius. Actually, Pygmalion and Davidius.

    Favourite C&H thread?
    Yaaah.

    How did you find boards?
I wandered into the politics forum and branched out from there.

How many people on boards do you know IRL?
I know Cheesefiend, Almostnever and Conorstuff very well. I go to college with a few others (like darling Davidius!) and I've met a few others too.

I've never met you, though. Why have I never met you?!

Up, down, strange, charm , bottom or top?
I hate physics. I'll go with charm, it made me think of Harry Potter which made double physics less boring.

    Rainbow or pot of gold?
Rainbow. Pots of gold have a tendency to disappear. Pesky leprechauns.

    Hotmail or gmail?
I've only just started using gmail, so I'll say Hotmail. I know gmail is better, but I'm used to Hotmail!

    Favourite boards thread ever?
The Den - the flirting that used to go on in that place!

    :)
    flyswatter wrote: »

About 2,000 miles and a serious attitude shift.

Found anything to "blame Canada" for yet?
The fog horns that keep me awake at night (my house is near the harbour).

If you had the power to bring in one law, what would it be?
I'd make it possible to get a presidential nomination with a citizens' petition of maybe 10,000 signatures.

    unknown13 wrote: »
Which module was worse: Constitutional Frameworks or Management of Ethnic conflict?
Management of Ethnic Conflict. Terrible lectures, hideous textbook, horrible exam. Lucky new first years don't have it!

    What is your political ideology?
Somewhere in the middle. I'll let you know when I work it out.

Are you involved in Clubs or Socs in UCD?
I signed up for loads, I need to actually get involved with more!

    Favourite thing about UCD?
The craic. It's mighty. I can't pick just one thing, I've romanticised the place over the summer and it's all so amazing now.

    Least favourite thing about UCD?
The library. The JJ is a hell hole during exams.

One event, 5 acts, unlimited budget, who?
Tough one! I'm assuming that they have to be alive, but not necessarily together (I'll use the money to bribe them)..
Snow Patrol, Fleetwood Mac, U2, Oasis and Arctic Monkeys. I think.
    wayhey wrote: »

Sentencing laws. People don't get charged with murder enough and they don't get put in jail for long enough. Children's rights are a big one too, though.

    Favourite childhood cartoon?
I progressed from Postman Pat to Rugrats to Recess.

Sun, sea and sand or skiing holiday?
I've only been skiing once, so I'll choose that!

Do you think you'll live in Ireland when you're all grown up?
I think I just might. I'll live somewhere else first, though.

Biggest differences between the average Irish and Canadian person of your age?
I'm not sure. Newfoundland is quite different to mainland Canada. It's only been Canadian since the late 1940s. I'd say ice hockey, though - it's HUGE here!
What's your favourite type of cuisine?
I like a bit of everything. Italian is always nice, though.

Will you come out with me when you come home so we can verbally abuse people again?
Hell yes! Do you realise we only went out together once all year at college? This must be improved!

    Do you still bake?
I do. Only, I can't here because I've nothing to bake with. I miss it.

Since you're in Canada do you now eat maple syrup with everything? And if not, whyever not?
Surprisingly, I've only had it once since I've been here. I've no excuse - there's a bottle downstairs!

Where does that one day we met rank in your list of most awesomest memories ever? :pac:
    It's definitely up there.

"I'm glad you didn't kill me in an alley with a knife..."

    "..or a WRENCH!"

    :D

Would you consider abandoning law to become a beekeeper if you got the bees for free?
No. I don't like honey that much.

What's your assessment of Enda Kenny's performance as Taoiseach so far?
I think it's going surprisingly well. I was never his biggest fan, but he seems to have pulled himself together of late!

After a strange and, quite frankly, inexplicable turn of events, you (and you alone) have the option to save either 10 sickeningly cute children or 100 Fianna Fáil members from certain death. Whichever group you don't save is immediately devoured by an unnamed but deadly sea monster. Do you choose to save 10 innocent lives or 100 somewhat-less innocent lives?
Oh no! That's horrible! I'm going to have to pick the children, they're so young... Can I sacrifice myself to the sea monster?

If you were a mutant, would you support Professor X's "we must work with humans" philosophy or Magneto's "we must conquer humans" philosophy?
I'd keep my power secret from the humans and use to to occasionally freak them out.

    Most controversial opinion?
I don't believe a United Ireland will or should happen any time soon.

What's the most overrated thing in society?
Celebrity culture of the obsessive order.

Have you ever had any interesting or weird bus experiences?
Yes. I was once on the bus with two charming old men, who casually drank cans of beer and smoked joints on the number 4. The men who threatened some lads from London because they didn't want to sit beside them was unusual too.

    What's your favourite word?
I'm not sure. Eloquence, dalliance, illustrious, elementary and clandestine are nice.

Do you like Peep Show (I notice the theme song embedded above)?
I've never seen it. I just like that song.

Favourite comedy / film / album / poem / television drama?
I hate picking favourites! They always change!
As of right now: He's Just Not That Into You / The Shawshank Redemption / Hospice by The Antlers / We Never Know How High We Are by Emily Dickinson / Game of Thrones.

Name a band that you think is underrated.
    The Antlers.

Who's your favourite dictator? And favourite moustachioed historical figure?
I'll go with Mussolini. Feckin' up and getting it away with 1922 - 1943. Einstein's 'tache was pretty sweet.

Is there any social custom that you find annoying / unnecessary / stupid?
Taking a million pictures of every night out you ever go on and uploading them to Facebook, where everyone is then painstakingly tagged.
On a non-social media note: having to pretend to old people that I believe in a higher power to avoid evil looks.

Ship Caught In The Bay - The Frames.
Sympathy For The Devil - The Rolling Stones.

    I do. Especially awkward ones.

One should never wear a hat while indoors. It's the height of rudeness.

What's your opinion of Fez hats?
I wouldn't wear one personally, but I like their exotic look.

Justin bieber and selena, yay or nay?
Doesn't really bother me either way. The age difference is a bit weird.

Pineapple on a pizza, yay or nay?
Yay. I haven't had it in a while, thanks for the reminder!

    Have any celebrity obsession? :P
Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol. :D Sometimes I'll go on Perez Hilton and have a mega-binge of celebrity gossip, most of the time I don't really care, though.

    Any more takers?

    Fav. IRCer (not Davidius)
    Pygmalion or Monzo.

    Oh.
    OK.

What do you think of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros? (It should be Zeroes but they spell it that way)

Is the reason you haven't watched Peep Show because you know that the two characters are basically me and Johnny?

Which do you honestly think is a better finished product - The Tribune or The Observer?

    Hi.

When are you coming back to Ireland?
    At the end of August.

What possessed you to spend an entire summer in Canada alone?
The original plan was to go with people, but when that fell through I thought that I might as well not waste a visa.

    Favourite part of Ireland?
Dublin. Or the hill behind my house.

Don't you just wish I was going to UCD next year?
A little part of me dies whenever I remember that you're not.

Favourite forum on boards other than C&H?
I'm not sure. I only really browse After Hours, Leaving Cert and UCD when I'm not in here.

    Favourite song by Snow Patrol?
Starfighter Pilot, How To Be Dead, Spitting Games....this is an unfair question! Ok, actually, An Olive Grove Facing The Sea.

Do you like Snow Patrol's new song?
I do. It's a bit different, but sure why not!

How'd you get on in your summer exams?
    I passed them all. Delira!

Did you have to pick electives and stuff for next year? If so, what'd you pick?
Yeah, we get two a year. Company Law 1 and Company Law 2 - I'm so cool.

    Solicitor or barrister?
    Probably barrister, possibly neither.

    Deise or Soccy?
    Jedward.

    Pygmalion or Davidius?
    Pygmalius.

    Favourite type of dog?
Golden retriever. I miss my dog now. Cheers, Noel!

    Do Canadians like Irish people?
    No. They LOVE them.

Have you met a Canadian called Ike or Mike yet?
    I've met one called Mike.

What is your opinion on the name 'Zwikov'?
It's very exotic and I have no idea how I'd go about pronouncing it.

    Favourite member of one direction?
Whichever one Soccy and Deise are obsessed with. He's the only one I know.

Garlic sauce or sweet and sour sauce?
    Sweet and sour.

What would you order in a chinese?
Sweet and sour chicken, because you've reminded me of it.

    Ma-vis Dah-vis or may-vis day-vis?
    May-vis Day-vis.

    Oh.
    OK.
You're never on IRC any more!

What do you think of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros? (It should be Zeroes but they spell it that way)
I've heard about 20 seconds of them. I can't form an opinion based on that, I can judge them for their spelling, though. :P

Is the reason you haven't watched Peep Show because you know that the two characters are basically me and Johnny?
No, I just never got round to it. Armed with this new information, I shall definitely have to give it a go. I'm scared to now, though.

Which do you honestly think is a better finished product - The Tribune or The Observer?
Last year, The Observer. This year, bring it on. ;)

If they don't have chippers, what do they have for take aways?

What's your opinion on the following things?

Cannabis and the debate about whether it should be legalised
I don't know an awful lot about either side, but it's probably a bad idea.

    Immigration
Sure, why not? Though there's not much to be at in Ireland right now.

    Sarah Palin
No thank you. Ever. Why won't she just go away?

    Pierce Morgan
    Creepy.

    Bull fighting
I just don't see the appeal.

    Wigs
The good ones are never noticed and the bad ones are highly amusing.

    Green cars
Depends on the shade of green.

    Public displays of armpit hair
    Ick, no. Put it away.

    Maths
I like some parts of, the rest just confuses me.

    Noisy eaters
I'm not a fan. My sister abhors them.

    Mullets
    Should stay in the 1980s.

    The Libya situation
    Give it up, Gaddafi.

The idea of going to see a film in the cinema alone
There's nothing wrong with it. I often go to the cinema alone over here...don't judge me.

    Slippers
    Yes, please.

    Hippies
    Refreshing in small doses.

Hula Hoops (the crisps, not the toy)
    They're very fun to eat.

Hula Hoops (the toy, not the crisps)
I'm not very skilled with one.

    David Norris
Looks like he's in hot water. A shame, really.

    Coffee cake
    No, thanks.

    The demise of Mavidius
He was getting too clingy, I had to end it.

    Ugg boots
I'll admit that I own a pair. They're not the weird D4 ones, though. So comfy.

    jumpguy
He's the worst jumpguy I know.

    Old men wearing jeans
    Whatever you're into yourself.

My inability to go to bed at a reasonable time
Daytime is for being awake, nighttime is for sleepies.

    Cats
    Not a fan.

    Dogs
I don't like the tiny ones that look like rats.

    Teenagers
    Angst, angst, angst.

    Oranges
Lovely as long as they're not sickly sweet.

    Facebook
Highly addictive. Sometimes I wish it didn't exist.

    Soap operas
Haven't watched one on a regular basis in years.

    Personal Issues
I find that most things can be made better with a chat.

That strange continuity ad on RTÉ where they show two ladybirds riding each other
I haven't watch RTÉ for 2 months, so I don't know what you're talking about.

    Puns
    A must. They're punderful.

    lol
    Haha.

    Killing spiders
I don't kill spiders. I put them outside.

    The Roll Eyes smiley
It doesn't really convey what it's supposed to.

    Jaffa Cakes
    Full moon, half-moon, total eclipse.

    Odd socks
    Go for it.

    Noel Edmond's facial hair
    Somewhere between impressive and creepy.

    Bus Éireann
I prefer not to use them. So slow!

    Ireland's drinking culture
It's not a wholly negative thing, just mostly.

    The Leaving Cert
    Never again.

    Jedward
Not my cup of tea. I'm still hoping that the way they go on is a hilarious joke. Someone needs to limit their sugar intake.

    Co. Cork
It's lovely. I want to visit it again soon.

    One day out-of-date food products
If it smells grand, it probably is grand.

This list of mostly inane things
An excellent way to pass the time.
