Lads, unfortunately those two dates don't suit for the Curragh. Captain's Prize is on on Saturday the 27th of August (with qualifying on the weekend before), and there are two societies already booked in for Saturday the 3rd of September.

Unless we change dates, we'll have to forget that course unfortunately!

I'm easy enough on the venue, looking forward to this

same here, anywhere within a reasonable drive will do.

just an alternative if you want lads....
I checked moate and the club classic is on the 26 - 28th - could stick in a few 4 ball teams.
Glasson will do a deal if there is more than 20 players but need to check dates.
Athlone (shudder!!!) is €25 if you have more than 16 but we could try haggle them

    Why the shudder ??

I played up there a few weeks ago when up that neck of the woods and I couldn't say enough about the course or the club. I'd deffo play there again when back up there.

    Back on topic.
I haven't voted yet but I'll try to get to the next outting if I'm available on the date that's picked. The course isn't top priority to me (I'm sure they are all fine tracks) and its not much of a difference driving 1hr 30mins or closer to 2hrs.

Note: Please no smart answers about the difference being 30mins or 33.33% etc :D

Having spoken to all clubs mentioned in the poll this morning, craddockstown and the curragh are out, craddockstown do not take societies on a sat and the curragh is not available on the 27/08 or 03/09 so that rules that out. That leaves it to 3. May the best course win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 264 ✭✭getcover

If Curragh and Craddockstown are out, can they be removed from the poll, so that anyone who voted for them can express their next preference?

(apologies if this is not possible)

did you guys try Rathcore, Austin is very accommodating to societies down there

Lads , I don't know much about marketing, but make sure you mention boards .ie and the views the website gets when booking , actually have another idea. Does boards make money ? could boards sponser outing. Only new here so maybe will keep a bit quieter.

Looks like a great course but I think we are trying to stay around the M7 route for now.

Any boards member is welcome to play :)

I cannot edit the poll nor can the mods so if you voted for the Curragh let me know where your second choice was. I voted for the Curragh but will play either Portarlington or The Heath

I voted The Curragh to Keano, put me down for Portarlington instead pls.

I voted for the Curragh as well, Portarlington would be my next choice, followed by the Heath (sorry Macreddin, purely logistics!)

I removed the 2 courses but didn't mess with the votes (there were 5 for the curragh, 0 for craddockstown) so ye can re-assign them if those that voted are not able to vote again.

I was able to vote again so should be the same for everybody

I've voted - but seeing as I am a total golf slut I'll play anywhere especially if it is the 27th. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 622 ✭✭✭Corkblowin

Hey guys, well done on the outing, I was raging couldn't make the date - however the GF has been warned well in advance this time :)
I've voted for Portarlington for logistics, but would love to have a crack at macreddin if that was the pick.

Voted McCreddin,I too am a golf "slut" and don't mind where it is!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,165 ✭✭✭Anatom

Turns out I won't be able to play on the 27th - a work outing in Carton which I can't miss - but the 3rd might be OK.

I voted for the Heath because I've played Port a good few times over the years and Macreddin would be too far for me that day. I really want to see what the Heath is like. I've heard fantastic things about it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55 ✭✭dolally

Played Portarlington yesterday. It's in great condition as it should be at this time of year. The greens are true and fast. One or two of the holes criss cross each other but its not a problem. The girl in the pro shop was great ( forgot GUI card, she sorted it out. ) and the grub was good.
Any course will do me though.

Wouldn't surprised me if Macreddin lose out again....

In case of a tie, can i suggest somebody with a bit of experience like KevinMarkham to come up with another venue that sits in between both Macreddin and The Heath.

I did a quick route from Aughrim and Portlaoise on www.aaireland.ie and it's seems that Carlow is slap bang in the middle between both. Mount Wousley GC spring to mind. What do you think guys??

    Just an suggestion..:)

Not sure what you are getting at? People are voting for the place they want to play that is easier for them to get too, obviously no one wants to sit in a car for 4 hours, play 5 hours of golf and then get back in their cars and drive for another 4 hours.

Anyone who voted for The Curragh please post in this thread your choice if you have not done so already. If you don't post before the poll close's on Sunday morning your vote will be void.

Fair enough!!! For me to to the Heath would be a 2 hour 15min drive!:(:(:(:(

Have to say guys, I can't understand Macreddin as an option here for a national society trying to get on it's feet. I understand it's a lovely course but it is not the best compromise, and a compromise should be considered. It essentially excludes anyone west of the midlands. If you have more people on this forum from the East, which is probable, then a top Eastern course is going to win any poll. There are enough top midlands courses to present as options. Asking for a specific preference probably only reflects the geographical east bias on the forum, not necessarily whether people would also be willing to play a course more suited to everyone's travel demands. Athlone is an obvious one but I'm sure there are others. Just my tuppence worth.

Glasson Golf in Athlone looks great and is 1.30 from Dublin.

I won't make the 27th Aug myself because i have my car booked in for the NCT @ 2.30pm in the afternoon.

This society is still in it's infancy and it's a learn as you go procedure. Definitely the midlands courses need to be included but maybe next time out,it would be unfair to mess about with the poll at this stage imo.
It's a 2hr 40 min trek for myself but there's a few of us might make an overnighter of it,this isn't an option for all I know but there's always the next outing...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 892 ✭✭✭Ben1977

The midlands is the best bet, don't exclude anyone, get as much people involved as possible for the first year. Get the crack going. Establish the society and then going forward you could go further away. Say 2 outings in each region. Once everybody is involved, then next year people will not want to miss the crack!!

For the future........while athlone would be geographically the centre of the country maybe a course nearer nenagh, birr, portlaoise would be better as they are served by motorways most of the way from the south and are not too hard a drive from anywhere else.

As for the next outing, am gonna be there regardless of the drive.

This point has been made already but in fairness the guy from Macreddin had offered prizes and had been very helpful for the first outing. This I believe is the only reason that it is included in the poll!
As I said earlier, I will probably make it to where ever it is but I know that I am the exception rather than the rule as regards my personal circumstances..
But, it is indeed in its infancy and could do with a couple of powerful attendances before branching out and you have to be careful not to SEEM eastern biased..
The ideal scenario is that we get another two outing under the belt and put together a few people and make out a calender for 2012.
One in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and the West. Another two or three in the midlands with a bias to the main towns again.

i haven't voted but hopefully i can go. Dont mind which course it is. It will have to be closer to the time before i can commit to anything.

Fair point really. I was actually considering voting for Macreddin but it was more out of them treating us so well last time and it being a decent course than anything. If ya think about the logistics it would be way better to play it in the midlands and have everyone turn up and give the society a good start. Macreddin is not going anywhere so it can be played at a later date. :)

I won't be available for 27th Aug but will be for September 3rd.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,379 ✭✭✭✭namloc1980

Hi guys, I would be interested in going on the outing/becoming part of the society. Don't have a handicap and only took up the game recently so still hacking away but not too bad :D anyway before I vote on this poll just wondering if a newbie hacker is welcome. I intend joining a club/getting a handicap within the next 6-12 months.

    I voted Portarlington,However i am available the 27th
But i am not available on the 3rd as unfortunatley i will
    be in GRAN CANARIA.

Thanks Guys for organising these events, would love to play.

Just checked out route planner and all 3 courses are approx. one hour from Dublin but voted for Macreddin GC since I played it once and loved it even if I was regretting not getting a buggy after the 13th or 14th.
