Lovely sunny day. Grab a few cans and get down to queen square. Free music there for the harbour festival

Planning on heading to the Ballon Fiesta. Anyone been at it before? Looks good on paper.

    Two choices,
http://www.seamusodonnellsbristol.co.uk/ Only one small telly but a nice little pub, they have http://www.premiersports.tv/

    Or

Molloy's on Baldwin Street in the City centre. They have rte, I watched the all ireland final there in September, but it is a really horrible themed irish bar.

Went into molloys yesterday at 12, bar man said they couldn't show the gaa anymore because of their licence.

Will try o'donnells during the week and see what the story is, want to watch the hurling sunday.

Yep try Seamus O'Donnells on Sunday, they will be showing it and there is usually a good few Irish lads in there watching the matches on Sundays. Its small so you get a bit of an atmosphere

life in Bristol is over now. Moved out to Thornbury at Christmas. Still a BS postcode but a bit closer to my job and a lot less time sitting in traffic! I sure don't miss Friday evenings on the M5!

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,361 ✭✭✭YouTookMyName

    Still here! Love the place.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,071 ✭✭✭questionmark?

I don't think anyone would miss the M5 on a Friday! Still here myself, still exploring and discovering new places and things to do. I wish they'd sort out the traffic problems though.

    Hi Folks,

I am moving to Bristol from Ireland in three weeks time. I am looking to rent a flat with a budget of about £700-800/month and I was wondering if anyone could tell me where are the best places to live in the city with this kind of budget and keeping in mind that I ll be working in Portburry. I don't have a car for the moment and I was wondering if a bus line goes out there or if there is maybe a way to cycle there. If it is too much hassle to travel everyday out there I was thinking of maybe looking at places closer such as Portishead. Any input would be much appreciated.

    Cheers.
    Nick

Good budget, you'll get something very very nice city with that kind of money. Gumtree and Spareroom are your best bet for rooms.

Bristol is a great city. Been here almost 2 years now.

PM me if you've any questions.

OP do have a quick look at the thread the last poster linked.

That's a good budget for a flat. Do remember the council tax on top of your rent. The cheapest rate is Band A and works out at £106 per month for ten months on top of rent in the Bristol City council area, it will be cheaper in North Somerset, South Glos. and BANES which make up a fair bit of the greater Bristol urban area and then £30 to £40 on water/sewarage charges. Also letting agents charge fees so check before commiting to credit checks.

There is a bus that passes near cant remember does it go straight through the place, the Portishead bus 362/363, but to be honest you would be best living out that area if you don't have a car and travel into Bristol for leisure. Check out First bus Bristol website travel planner or travelline.co.uk

BTW Bristol is great, have fun.

Portbury is about a 25 minute drive (in traffic) from Bristol city so cycling that everyday is not an option imo.

If you are determined to live in Bristol city or surrounding i would really check bus/train services and work from there seeing as you dont have a car.

With your budget (is it a 1 bed or studio you are after, living on your own?) you can get something nice right in the city centre or if you dont want to live right in the centre i would go for Clifton (one of the poshest parts) or somewhere like Bedminster (cheaper). Both areas are a few k outside city and would mean you wouldnt have to go through city centre traffic in the mornings. Again, you would need to work out getting to work everyday (im presuming its working you are going there for) and work from there as to a good location.

Edit, I did a quick search out of interest for 1 beds with max budget of 800. There can be options available with electric/gas/internet thrown in as inclusive in the rent so have a proper poke around the other agents.

Cheers daithijjj. I am actually looking for a one bed flat. Cheers for all the info mate.

So far based on all your comments, I am considering either Clifton if I manage to get a car or Portishead if I cant buy a car by then.
Any ideas of how much tax council I will have to pay for a one bed flat in these areas?

Welcome, i lived in Bristol for 6 years but moved now, my council tax was around 1400 (a 2 bed right in city centre, 2 mins from train station) so its fairly steep. It depends on what band the property falls into. Clifton will be more expensive as its an area thats quite popular for people with plenty of cash tbh, that and Bristol Uni students. Somewhere like Bedminster will be cheaper. An estate agent or landlord will give you exact info before you rent obviously.

    Hey Nick,
By chance are you working for Kerry Group in Portbury?
I lived in Bristol for a year travelling from Clifton to Portbury, took about 20-25 mins by going over the Clifton suspension bridge.

I definitely wouldn't recommend living in Portishead, a former colleague who did said she started living a life of work to home, home to work, with nothing in between because there wasn't much to do in Portishead. Bristol city on the other hand has plenty going for it.

As stated above, Clifton is a lovely spot, certainly not the cheapest, I was paying 600 per month (before expenses and taxes) in a three bed shared two floor apartment near whiteladies road.
Was a great location and would definitely recommend the area.

I would suggest, saving up a bit of cash and picking up a cheap run around.
Any more specific questions feel free to ask or fire me a PM if you want.

Looking to move myself, on the bath road in brislington at the moment. Good places are tough come by for decent money.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,071 ✭✭✭questionmark?

YouTookMyName Do you mind where you live location wise? Size wise it will never be the same as Ireland but there is some decent places around but take a fair bit of looking. Got a nice one bedroom place between kingswood and Fishponds myself, private landlord, professional only complex with a garden.

If you go to Clifton and have a car, be sure to get someplace with reserved parking or you will driving around for hours every night looking for a place to park. Clifton is nice but crowded....

buses in Bristol are expensive too in my experience but I haven't had to use them much so I could be wrong!

think there is a ticket/card you can get for all major bus companies that works out at 140 per month for the bristol city area, a bit more to include wider surrounding areas. Its basically unlimited travel anytime. Think there is other options like a day pass for around £7, think its called avaon travel card or something. When you factor in the price of parking around bristol its reasonable enough i suppose, when i was there it was £12 for the day in the city, probably more now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,071 ✭✭✭questionmark?

Unsure if your work area falls just in or out of Zone 3, but a monthly ticket would be £84. This would be unlimited travel in Zone 1,2,3 during the week plus unlimited travel on all first bus services in the south West at the weekends. Zone 1 works in the centre and zones work out to include greater bristol and surrounding areas.

If outside Zone 3 a south west ticket, covering all first service's in the region, would be required at £96 per month.

I'm a bus user these days as the car was a waste to be honest for where I work and live.

There is other bus companies in the area but first have by far and away the most extensive service.

Thanks lads for the great replies, very useful. I just found out that I will be working in the Bradley Stoke area of Bristol. I hear now that the traffic is pretty bad in Bristol. Does anyone knows any nice places to live around Bristol where I wouldn't be stuck in traffic to get to work during rush time? As stated before I am looking for a place with maybe 2 bedrooms and around £750-850 monthly. Cheers

Thats about 15k outside Bristol, on the north side. So pretty much essential you need to live north side. Horfield, Frenchay, Filton, those kinds of areas would be about right for you, halfway between Bristol and work but travelling away from Bristol to get to work. You should have plenty of options on your budget.

Edit.......quick search, found this in 2 mins, 750 p/m in Bradley Stoke. Plenty of options around.

    Thanks Daithijjj.
I was wondering, if I have a car and drive from Clifton via the A369/M5 to go to/from work in Bradley stoke everyday, would that be a long journey. On google maps it shows at around 25-30min drive but I am sure that with traffic etc. it probably would take longer, anyone has any experience taking this road? Cheers.

To be totally honest i would be guessing with pretty much all of the north side and traffic times, i lived all my time south side and in the city centre. I have a very good friend who used to live in Westbury on Trym and there my knowledge ends with regard driving times. Im going to assume you are going that way towards the M5, it never took me less than 15 mins just to get that far. In traffic that is easily 20 mins but i only ever took that in the evenings. Sorry cant be more help than that. The driving guide i had a quick look at there for you says its a 16 minute journey to Bradley Stoke from city centre but thats taking the M32. I cant see it being quicker from Clifton via the M5 but maybe someone else has info. Maybe you could go Clifton to M32?.......again, not sure on traffic from that direction.

If you work in Bradley Stoke I would recommend living out there and travelling into the city for socialising. It's a commuter town(extension of Bristol but in South Glos. C.C.) plenty of places on your budget. Transport from Clifton is not good in rush hour to Sadly Broke(locals term) and quality of life is important.
