Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

My mates and I would walk into any club in town but we choose costellos as it's not full of judgemental fools like your self. I'll have to pull out the trench coat to ward off the rest of the clowns.

Every night is a college night out when your in college! And yes i am. I gave it a chance. I gave it 3-4 chances. It was shÃ*te each and every time. I would actually describe it as a den for future ( if not current) Left wingers and socialists.

Good for you mate. Put everyone neatly into a box and keep them there. Makes life much easier to navigate. Best stay nice and cosy in your comfort zone and away from all the freaks.

Oh brilliant, just what was needed, another icon is sh1t, costellos is great, no costellos is smelly and icon is cool thread

I just notice the trend that the pro-icon crowd brand all costelloes goers as lefty weirdo hippies, just because of their clothes.........

I'm a right-liberal and I go to Costello's, so that blows that theory out of the water!

From my wide circle of friends, some frequent the Icon, some frequent Costello's, others frequent neither. I can't say there's any defining characteristic that each group has in common.

TheInquisitor has a lot of growing up to do I reckon.

You don't even live here anymore!!!:D

I've pretty much ended up sticking wit Costellos lately because Icon is full of scumbags and Angel Lane still think it's 2007.

Never any trouble in Costellos, even has beer pong now, but the jacks are appalling!

and of course once you have designer clothes on, you're not a scumbag. There's a reason certain types of bands play in Smyths to a certain type of crowd.

I only wear designer clothes because I'm rich and like to show off that fact. I often light my cigarettes with 20euro notes to drive the fact home. Don't see any of the sheep doing that

I dont know if I'd go as far as to say its full of socialists and left wingers but costellos like any other place in Lim has a particular clientel alright. More emo / hipster / alternative types I would say. More tollerible than scobes but can still grind on ya after a while.

Seems like there is no club to go to in limerick if you dont have any strong views on life or assign yourself to a particular click.
What if I dont wear tracksuits(icon)? What if I dont wear trendy skinny jeans / fake glasses(costellos) ? What if I'm not Polish (Trinners)?
Late pubs are the only true melting pots in the city imo.

True enough. And it should be a case of each to their own anyway. It just amuses the reaction some quarters, particularly females, have towards costellos.

I have to say, I was a Termites (savoy) and High Stool regular and I absolutely despise Costello's. I cannot stand the place or its owner and his sons. Their attitude at the door leaves a lot to be desired.

I will say I haven't been there in a number of years, but my experiences in the past would lead me to stay away from the place.

    Edit: Also I'm not female.

I got to see about an hour of their set last night. I have to say, I totally disagree with you. For just two guys and a guitar they did a very good job. The songs they played weren't the best, but every pub covers-band has to play the old reliable rubbish.

You are WELL wide of the mark on that one, every pub covers band that plays Smyths has to play the old reliable rubbish.

Go drink in better pubs and see other bands, there's plenty of variety out there - Nancys, Foleys, Dolans, The Office, O'Connells, Bourkes and more all have a variety of bands on different nights

I usually do pick better pubs. Believe me, Smyths wasn't my choice the other night! The point still stands about covers-bands in general. Even the most dedicated ones know they need to hit a minimum number of crowd-pleasers that they don't really enjoy playing very often.

I go to Icon, Angel Lane and rarely go to Costellos.

Costellos is manky but the music is really good.

Icon has decent enough music but the bouncers can be d!ckheads and women in their 30s wreck my head in there if I just wanna get p!ssed.

Angel Lane is the best of the lot, bouncers are grand, music is decent enough and usually get a good laugh in there. I don't like when the upstairs part isn't open though.

I listen to all types of music (from thrash/death/black metal to rap to dance/techno etc.etc.) so I feel qualified to comment on this.

Whoever says "Oh costellos is sh!t because its full of goths" is a fucking spacer. I wear tracksuit pants/soccer jerseys and jeans etc. and more than likely listen to heavier stuff than they do. Don't be judging a book by it's cover!

in fairness flann could really do with fixing the jacks (horrific even by limerick pub standards), cleaning the guinness lines (same as the jacks apparently) and dropping prices (2 Pints of Black and a Lucozade there was €2 something steeper than Charlies).

That aside, I'm a male, non-Shannonsider (Been here about 8 yrs though) and Costellos is still the most relaxed late bar I go to.

careful what we say about the businesses in Limerick city. when a person on another thread posted about being ripped off by a Limerick hotel he was lambasted by the vested interests/bleeding hearts for giving the city a bad name...;)

Guinness themselves clean the Guinness lines in every pub every two weeks. Its a mystery to me how the quality can vary so drastically from pub to pub, guess its down to the glasses and how often/regularly the tap is used...

Oue thing I'll never have is a pint of anything in icon though...

There are a few good bars left in the town but people in Limerick seem to herd together like sleep and just follow the crowd, people seem to bitch and moan about Nancys but yet still go there, the pints in the outback are brutal and the bogs are a disgrace and the barstaff serve the best known to them first regardless how long you wait.

You have two bars that modelled themselves on the above mentioned Nancys which are first Flannerys its the same music, the pints are bad most of the time ok the bogs are alot better but most of the people there are only there because Nancys are full point to be proven if you go there any other night of the week outside of Fri or Sat its empty because theres space in Nancys. The second is Cobblestone Joes which is nicknamed Nancy fakes take a look around the smoking area next time your in and again the music is the same, the pints are good but the bog needs to be redone already its destroyed.

There are lots of good bars around but they dont fit the Nancys description so people with the sheep mind set seem to by pass them and complain afterwards theres no good places.

Just out of curiosity, can people post what they think is most important thing they look for in a good bar??? for me its a decent pint

  • Registered Users Posts: 871 ✭✭✭savagecabbages

Several nails on the head there!

If i'm just going for a pint, then obviously a good pint is number 1 on my list.
If its a night out, the atmosphere (really the music) is the important thing. Nancys has this in spades (hence all the dancing and pint spilling). True theres an odd crowd in there, but I'm not going to let anyone else dictate my night to me!

I'd get over a nasty toilet aslong as the odour doesn't make its way around the bar...

If they did fair enough. I was dragged there at the beginning of college 6 years ago. I was so shocked at how bad it was that night, after a few people that said they liked it, that i made sure to go back there 2-3 times over the next few months. There was no change. It was horrible. Half the crowd wearing trenchcoats. The other half were goths.

As far as i can determine the only people that go there are people that find it difficult to get into regular pubs/clubs.

I remember being horrified by the toilets aswell. Can't remember why though.

Does Nancies have the licence on anyone building a bar in Limerick with a Courtyard? The only reason your comparing like with like is the 3 places named have a similar clientele who would,nt be seen dead in Smyths. Lots of bars are quiet during the week especially in our current climate. Even Blakes is not doing half the business it was. Between exemptions and music I estimate they are spending 5k a week to try and keep business alive (5 late bars and music 3 times a week). What they have suceeded in doing is attracting punters down after midnight who are already intoxicated and serving a hour past the time the should be. Nancies is beginning to age, beer is awful and the toilets are disgusting and he crowd has got messier hence I am a regular now in Cobblestones and love the place.

A little birdie tell me you work in Nancies so you must be well used to the smell!

Regarding ICON which the thread is about. Awful place. Angel Lane might be quieter but he crowd is a lot nicer. Like most things your man who owns the place runs - cheap food and discounted drink and a rougher crowd reflected in the door men's attitude. We all can't be wrong regarding the behaviour and attitude of his door staff. Saw a few of them one night 2 months ago making fun of a few guys with hearing difficulties when they refused them and thought it was awful.

Lots of bars both old and new have smoking areas/courtyards. I was referring to the colour of cobblestones courtyard, the heaters, the coloured bulbs, the beer barrels if you look around you'll see the similarities between both courtyards and before some one says i'm having a go i'm not. I do drink in all the above mentioned bars including Smyths. Cobblestones have done well for themselves with the Nancys effect and fair play to them long may it continue. People complain about Nancys on a regular basis yet they all go back, i've been in Cobblestones on many occassions where its been worst than Nancys for being overcrowded, impossible to get to the bar and full of the messers that you would see in Nancys. One thing that sticks out is that for years proir to Cobblestones opening, Nancys has always been the same for years with bad drink in the outback and less than adequate bathrooms so was there no other bar/pub in the city to go to before Cobblestones open?

The thing wrong with Limerick nightlife is the complete and utter lack of variety.

It's horrendous. All the clubs are the exact same with the exact same type of people, (there is no difference between Icon, Trooms and Angel Lane people, just what nights/weeks they go on) the exact same overpriced drink, same type of DJ's and the exact same overpriced entry charge (seriously Angel Lane and their 12 euro can take a hike, this isn't Dublin or even London). 12 euro is the most I have ever paid into a bar in Ireland and it being in Limerick really sickens me, it's not like we have the nightlife to justify the price.

The music (even though I love pop/chart) is always the same. Mollys of course is the worst of the worst for this but I am not sure if it's gotten better since they re-furbished a.k.a aged the décor 50 years. I haven't gone there in months but wonder now why did I ever? They were dire and the doormen are seriously in need of a reality check.

There is just nothing different here, simple as. The only place I have been to yet with any bit of difference is Costelloes, it's just a really easy going and has a different crowd. Not that-that means the crowd is alternative in anyway (or if they are that is a bad thing) but more so it has that chilled out atmosphere of a more mature pub mixed with the youth of a club. It's nice and completely refreshing, for me anyway.. I would love a place with it's atmosphere and a mix of chart music but in Limerick that would not go down well.

The Globe was a building site last time I saw it. They were supposed to be building a youth hostel there. Then an asylum seekers' hostel. Then nobody knew any more. The High Stool has been bought by a property development management company (according to the signs hanging above it) but that could mean anything!
