    Hi all,
Does everyone have their own private bedroom in both larkfield and hampstead (not sharing with another person) ? and can someone please explain larkfield as im getting it hard to get my mind around it. There are 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen and no sitting room? and are you in this apartment with only one person?

    Hi

I'm not in DCU yet but it's in my top 3 (in all three slots) so I went for a look. Basically, there's a main door to the Hampstead and Larkfield apartments. The Larkfield is a lot smaller, just two bedrooms. The two bedrooms are left and right as you come in the door. Straight in front of the door is the bathroom (you share this). You have your own room, and the bedrooms are separated by a kitchen. The 'living room' is the common room.

In Hampstead, there is the main door which leads into a corridor. At the top of the corridor as you come in is a kitchen/living room. Then there are four single rooms and one double room along the corridor. Each of these rooms houses one person and is en suite.

Now, I'm no expert (as I said, not a DCUer yet, and I haven't been up there since November of last year) but that's pretty much how I remember it, and some of the words I've had with friends who've gone to DCU and lived to tell the tale. I really hope this helps!! :D

so in larkfield you basically have an apartment for 2 people? and the living room is shared by every1 on the floor? but what if you get with someone you really dont get on with? what order of preference did you put down?

Basically, yeah. The common rooms are meant to be a hive of activity and great for meeting people so never fear about that. If you do end up living with someone you clash heads with, which is something I'm worrying about myself, I'd say the best option is to spend as much time in the common room as possible, or just try to make an effort. I myself put Larkfield as my first, then one of the singles in Hampstead, you?

ye i had the same order. Put larkfield 1st because of it only being available to 1st years but i was there was like at least 3 people in the apartment :/ what are the bedrooms like in larkfield? desk? ssingle bed? wardrobe...etc. and overall does it seem like a nice place to stay in?

That was my thinking too, I didn't wanna be stuck for a whole year with a group of third years who I'd nothing in common with.

The rooms themselves are grand. Granted a bit small but it's not Buckingham Palace. There's a bed, a wardrobe, a desk. As far as I remember anyways. Overall it seems grand. They might fine for stupid things (which you may have heard tell about) but I'd imagine after a while it'll feel like a home away from home.

Just outta interest, what course did you apply for, and where are you from? I've heard on the grapevine that the further you live from Dublin (eg: I'm from Waterford) you might be more likely to get a room.

Im from monaghan, turning 17 next week and hoping to do acturial maths (500 points) or common entry into it (420 points). So if i get my 1st choice ill be guaranteed a place on campus as any1 who gets over 500 is :) I just hope im not stuck with some dry person or a smoker or heavy drinker or unsporty or weird person :L mayb i shud have chosen hampstead now as id be sharing with more people? :/

Thanks for them links. Larkfield looks TINY :/ how many apartments are on one floor like how many of us share the common room?

Ah, the common rooms got locked last year after Christmas AFAIK, because people were being planks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 229 ✭✭Cardor

I heard after they were closed people used to just sit out in the corridors and talk out there.. and drink and shtuff.. it'l be the crack..

Larkfield looks small.. but humble as well.. :P I kinda like that room.. people are alz in one another's rooms anyway..

last year I heard people had a "boards" party like a load of people met over boards and then it was less awkward once they got up there.. like to make new friends.. :P Once the offers are announced that would be a good Idea.. :P

Not really, we just went to people's rooms instead of the common rooms. Common rooms were definitely better, larkfield got very cliquey once they were closed.
The boards beers was a bit of craic alright, managed to meet a dude on my course there and everything!

Yeah we will set up a boards beers for sure after the CAO offers and stuff, cool to get to know some new people, I have a less embarrassing username this time and all so its all good :D

he didn't live in larkfield! :p
I know of 2 or 3 lads that hated their roomie, they got over it fairly shortly and just went to other people's apartments more often than others. no biggie.

Stand back men, I'm going into final year and know more than any Wolfe Tone about this spot.

Theres a sticky on accomdation here which provides very accurate information about options available in much greater detail. I'll say the things here the Mods can't.

In my opinion, Guantanamo Bay (Larkfield) if great in terms of "craic" and it'd be my reccomendation to first years. If your any way social atall you'll get to know loads of people/drinking buddies/fu ck buddies etc.
Larkfield rooms themselves are quite small and akin to a jail cell. So if your stuck up your own arse go live somewhere else. On the other hand it's very livable once you make friends there.

Hampstead is slightly better in terms of living quality, but with less first years there wouldn't be just as much "criac" Theres not the same atmosphere in terms of corridor antics/common room shifts etc.
So if your stuck up your own arse and don't wanna make friends go live there.

The most important factor of living on Campus is "Campus Residences Ltd" this is the company (independent of DCU) run for profit, responsibly for campus accomodation. Their profits are generally in excess of 1 million a year !!! Make no mistake about it, these guys want money and don't give a flying fu ck about you. Their Security team is probely what you will meet most. No overnight guests are allowed unless booked in 24 hours in advance for a fee. Fines are changed on room inspections for extremy trivial things. Again these are all money spinning methods for "the company"
They run the residences almost like a boarding school and for college students is far too strict in my opinion.

The other options for first years would generally be gateway/shanowen apartments. Here you don't have the pain of DCU security and their overnight guest stupid policy. So if you like one night stands and bringing home randomers, live somewhere here.

House-sharing is probely not an option for first years at they may not know 4/5/6 people they trust to live with. But for 2nd year on, its definately the best option. Much cheaper than campus/shanowen and total independance of Security/fines and all that sh1t.

Will we still have the apartments over the christmas period.. like when we're finished college?

Like if I were to have a job up there would I still be able to use that apartment or would I have to pay extra to rent it out?

The bedroom does look really small but would you expect it to be big? It's college accommodation, I'm sure it's perfectly adequate! The potential problem is if there is enough space for clothes. What's storage space like? Will I be storing shoes in the kitchen presses=p In the video there were a good few shelves, that's okay, but then there's a teeny rail for hanging up clothes!...Though mine are mostly all over floor anyway, I'm feeling sorry for future housemate already.

I really hope I get Larkfield.

I believe you and your housemate have different key cards and can lock the kitchen door(that leads to the bedroom) too. Don't know about the rest.

DCU website says there's 125 units in Larkfield, so I guess there would be around 42 apartments on a floor and 84 people for every common room. Is this completely wrong?

Definetely live in larkfield for first year if u dont and you end up knowing ppl who live there you will totally regret it. I lived there last year and the crac was great. I have friends who didnt get on with there roommates but most of the time we were in other peoples apartments anyway. Most ppl got on with there roommates which was great. We always had our common rooms closed because we were having parties but after that we jus had them in our apartments

Hi guys, yas are just asking the exact questions i was no length ago! Can I just say that 'have a backup plan' for accomodation! 'DavieKelly', Im from Monaghan also and I was somehow convinced I would get on campus. Tbh some ppl say its done by distance but I think it could be randomly picked. What happened me and many others was dumbfounding when we realised we couldn't get on campus. There bes a last minute scramble on the day places are offered to get into off campus places. Luckily I got in on time to http://www.shanowensquare.com/ which I couldn't recommend more and Im actually glad I didnt get on campus in first place. I prefer the layout of apartments and the fact each apartment has a common room. Its only a slight bit dearer but far more modern and the security is far more reasonable. In saying that, shanowen square nd hall r jst like a campus of their own nd very seldom did I actually go onto campus, 90% of ppl I got to know were from off campus so I wouldnt worry about that. Its really handy having the shop at shanowen opened to 11 each night. What I'd suggest to do before leaving results come out is to stick your name down in shanowen nd if one doesnt get an offer from campus, then pay your shanowen deposit. In saying that, 2 days after I got refused campus, I got on offer cuz someone didnt accept their place.Hope this is helpful, anymore qs, fire away!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86 ✭✭sourire

What date do you get offerered a place on campus? If I applied for Shanowen as a back-up I would have to know if I got a place by 26 August because that's the last date you can get your deposit back with Shanowen. Is it the day the leaving cert results come out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11 S.Coltons2

Nothin bad about campus. Tbh I dont know much about it cuz i spent 99% of the time in shanowen! All I'm sayin is people just assume campus is the be all nd end all of accomodation but actually shanowen is equally as good, if not better!!

Im going into 3rd year, and will be moving into college park, having been in Hampstead last year and Larkfield year before, So I can answer a most questions on it.
I'm a fairly non-party type though but I still thought it was fine when I got used to noise. With societies and everything on campus I could easily go out in the morning and not come back till past half 10 at night.

and do go to a boards meet up, When I started we organised one for orientation week, was nice to meet people, we'd also had a chatroom set up for us before we started.

a boards meeting isn't really all that organised, eventually someone will start a thread for all the first years to discuss things and look for people studying the same things. Then you can suggest a day and time during orientation week to meet up. When I was in first year we met in the Helix and wandered over to the pub across the road, lots of people were still underage so it wasn't all drinking, more a chance to get to know a few people.

Noodleworm.......what you think of larkfield? did you get on with your housemate? and how many people on a floor? recommend campus fro 1st years or live at home nd commute? :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 717 ✭✭✭Noodleworm

I got on with my roommate fine, she was lovely. We didn't really hang out when not in the apartment though as we each made our own friends.

I actually have no idea how many on a floor, I never really spent time in the common rooms. The Larkfield is a square shaped building with a courtyard in the middle and four separate entrances, all the corridors separated by fire doors, so you may never see people on the other side of the building.

I think living on campus is pretty good for a first year, it gets you more involved in the college and activities, but it also makes you learn to deal with things like roommates or noise.
I think living away from home, and living at home while commuting are very different college experiences.
Living on campus Ive had to learn to be independent and fully care for myself but I've also had a lot more free time for college work and societies, don't miss classes.

From what Ive observed of my friends who commute, they have less free time, and their main priorities seem to be to get to class, and get home as no one wants to be travelling home late. Much less free time, worrying about busses and getting home for dinner.
You can always commute for the first year or semester though.
