They said they found a car completely destroyed at the centre of the explosion, so a bomb sounds plausible.

I get your point, but would they have been doing it people didn't use religion to put them up to it ?

Jammed I am sorry but you are becoming a bit ridiculous now. Do you have a problem with everyone and everything different from yourself?

The details are not out yet, so you cannot conclusively state it was an attack by any religious group or persons!

And even if indeed it was carried out by a religious group, it wouldn't be peculiar to that 'religion of peace' you are referring to, there are a lot of them closer to home.

    Bomb confirmed.

Massive amount of damage. Perhaps a truck bomb.

Gaddafi potential I suppose, but I'd be inclined to go with regular al-qaeda. Perhaps both

    No

Fine, feel free to say I told you so if a group of Baptists in downtown Oslo ended up going off on one.

And even if indeed it was carried out by a religious group, it wouldn't be peculiar to that 'religion of peace' you are referring to, there are a lot of them closer to home

    What?

BBC reporting 2 confirmed dead. Irish diplomatic staff all believed to be safe and well.

Regardless of who is to blame, they are terrorists. Does it matter whether the label is Islamist, republican or loyalist? Scum works just fine as a label, whoever they are.

"Several unexploded bombs" in Oslo according to the state broadcaster.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,670 ✭✭✭✭Wolfe Tone

Looks like a pretty big bomb, car or truck I'd say.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,684 ✭✭✭JustinDee

Jammed or whoever you are, there is no confirmation whatsoever of who is responsible for these explosions. Only speculation from sources outside the investigation.

I'm watching NRK live right now via an RTE feed. The police etc are not giving anything away on any suspects.
There's a press conference at 17.30 (Norwegian time).

This is what happens when you let muslims into a country.
Pig ignorant thing to say. Do people call you an alcoholic shyster who dances a jig at crossroads with a pig under your arm or a terrorist sympathiser.
Still the internet will keep you safe with an anonymous moniker.

any update on that? As it may suggest a warning was given. Which could possibly indicate gadaffi rather than an al-qaeda style group

None as of yet. However, Norwegian police are saying that there is a link between the bombing and the shooting.

BBC are running live coverage here.

Also, Islamic Fundamentalists, Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami, are claiming responsibility according to NYT. http://nyti.ms/pDR4gG

Anybody having difficulty aligning the reports of a Car Bomb with the TV images of the damaged buildings...?

Some of the damage appears to show evidence of the blast coming from within the upper stories of one central building...

It all looks very odd...time ,as ever, will tell.

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

Ya thought the same, didn't see any crater yet, that you would think a car bomb would leave.

7 dead in Oslo, possibly 10 dead in Utøya. Looks like the shooting is related. Too much of a coincidence.

This is awful - Oslo is a tiny city. I'm sure everyone will know someone affected by this.

God the news coming out of Norway is horrible :(
    RIP to those who died.
Thoughts and sympathies with the people of Norway at this time.

Terrible day in Norway really shocking.
Very strange if its one person!
Described as 6ft blonde white male.

10.01pm: Neil Perry tells me the police have said that the same man was seen at the site of both attacks.

He thinks this is starting to look less like the work of international terrorists and more like that of a lone attacker with a grudge against the government.

I get it perfectly well. Lumping an entire demographic irrationally because of a minority within it might go well in your eyes but it doesn't in mine.

its been confirmed that the attacker was a tall blond norwegian.
And they suspect he was behind both the bombing and the shooting at utøya.:D

    The motive however nobody knows??

Given that Ireland has spawned more than its fair share of domestic terrorists, we should be all too aware of just how unrepresentative such people can be of the wider community.

My personal opinion is that the hard work in trying to attract investment to Ireland over the years by organisations such as the IDA must have been frequently undone by the actions of our (domestic) self-appointed "heroes of the revolution" as the initial reaction of MNCs to such actions must frequently have been to avoid Ireland like the plague.

I have to say i doubt it highly,as we have our own rebels who would take them out and i am sure would work with Garda to take them out if they found threats to Irish.

Just had a thought that we may be looking at a Timothy McVeigh style attacker. Internal, home grown and an anti-government fanatic.

The death toll is expected to rise.
Sky quoting AP report saying this man is an ethnic Norwegian and it's more "Oklahoma bombing than 9/11", like Timothy McVeigh.

Yes. Police are searching his apartment now. It's in a wealthy area of Oslo. They are saying he may have worked alone as there was 2 hours between the attacks and it takes roughly 45 minutes to drive from Oslo to the island.

Eye witnesses on the island say he was dressed as a policeman and called the children/teenagers to him. As they came forward he opened fire.

To add, it's emerging that he is a Christian Conservative who likes hunting

If this is all confirmed, what will Sky News do? Will they start to describe him as a white christian conservative with muslim fundamentalist/jihadist leanings?
