Celbridge can complete the U21 double if they win the hurling final on Sunday.

Ger Donnelly has been elected as new chairman. Mick Gorman is the new vice chairman

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

Best of luck to them. They are going to need it.

    Kildare U21 HC Final:

    Celbridge 2-13 Naas 0-9

    Leinster JFC Final:

    Moate 1-11 Straffan 0-10

Fantastic achievement by Celbridge to complete the double. Straffan left themselves with too much to do in Mullingar by the sounds of things.

Was at the convention yesterday. John McMahon is not a happy bunny with the Kildare Nationalist. Threat of legal action hanging in the air over an opinion piece which they printed in the days coming up to the convention. Piece was highly critical of his term in charge of Kildare GAA. Surprised at the nature of his defeat 102-49 in favour of Ger Donnelly. From listening to the state of the finances yesterday it sounds like Donnelly is going to have his work cut out even to stand still. 300K extra needs to raised in 2015 alone if all commitments need to be met. I wish him luck.

McMahon took on the role in very difficult circumstances after Ashe’s resignation. I’ve met him on a few occasions and he is a very nice and genuine man with a great passion for Naas and Kildare. Unfortunately his reign as chairman was quite a turbulent period for the county board. The financial state of Kildare GAA was not altogether healthy prior to 2011 so it would be unfair to lay the blame at his door for that but the deterioration of the relationship between the county board and Club Kildare is hugely regrettable. The adverts in the local papers appealing for sponsorship after the Tegral deal ended were embarrassing. Heads were buried in the sand during the Johnston transfer when it seemed as if the county board were unwilling to rein in McGeeney. We had the hurling management resign in December 2012 due to a lack of county board support only to be reinstated the following month. The split in the county executive over the McGeeney vote in 2013 was probably the beginning of the end. The top table should always present a united front no matter what. After that episode the county board was described as: “dysfunctional and lacking in both leadership and unity” by the 2013 Kildare senior football panel.

Donnelly is another good man but I don’t envy the job he has ahead of him. I cannot understand how we struggle so much as a county to generate income considering Kildare led the way as far as supporters clubs and fundraising were concerned in the early 1990s. We have a relatively large support base compared to others and we are quite an affluent county for the most part. The entire organisation of Club Kildare needs a thorough review as far as I’m concerned. It doesn’t seem to tap into the large support base to anywhere near the extent that it should. The response to fundraising efforts like the raceday at Punchestown in May and the ballroom dancing in the Killashee in October is believed to have been very disappointing which is no surprise given how poorly publicised those events were.

Emmet McDonald ratified as new JTB manager according to Facebook, a big coup for them given he managed a lot of them to Leinster and All-Irelands in St Marys in Edenderry, could be a team to watch next year

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

Barney Rock is the new Two Mile House manager. Declan Cryan got the Monasterevin job.

The O'Byrne Cup throws in two weeks from today when Louth visit Newbridge.

Hugh McGrillen is taking a year out from inter county football. Daryl Flynn will miss the league campaign and Paul Cribbin is also doubtful. Jonathan Byrne is going to concentrate on hurling.

There is a big panel training at the moment and it will be cut at the end of January. One group is doing gym work in Newbridge and another in Celbridge. Kevin Croke from the National Athlete Development Academy is the new s&c coach.

Gavin Wynne from Kiltegan is the new manager of St Laurences. He served as a selector for Wicklow for the last 3 years.

Heard a few weeks ago Johnny Doyle was to take over a team in Laois. Anyone hear anymore about this?

Stradbally. He might bump into Glenn Ryan's Arles-Kilcruise at some stage.

A shame to see them managing in bandit country. We have a Dub in Rock managing an Intermediate team, no doubt on huge money. Glenn would have been a perfect fit for Moorefield. I know he turned down the Towers job as he's good friends with a lot of their players which is fair enough.

Barney is Shane Darcy's father in law so there is a family connection with that one. Unfortunately Kildare clubs managed by Kildare managers are a rarity nowadays. Plenty of "big" names from neighbouring counties have been involved in the Kildare club scene over the last few years and it's hard to argue that are clubs are the better for it. Barney Rock, Jack Sheedy and Paul Bealin from Dublin. Pascal Keelaghan, Emmet McDonnell, Richie Connor, Stephen Darby and Padraig Dunne from Offaly. Hugh Kenny from Wicklow. Mick Lilis, Mark Kavanagh and Dessie Brennan from Laois. David Beggy and Colm Coyle from Meath. Jack Cooney from Westmeath. It's no wonder we struggle to find Kildare men to take over our county teams when this is the trend with the clubs.

It seems to be the done thing around Leinster these days. There are a good few Kildare lads knocking about in neighbouring counties now. Enda Murphy won a Dublin Intermediate Championship with Castleknock. Karl O'Dwyer has had some success with Old Leighlin in Carlow after a stint with Coolkenno in Wicklow. Now we have Glenn and Johnny over Laois clubs. Dermot Earley was also nominated for the Offaly job.

    Has Mikey Conway retired?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

I haven't heard anything official anyway but he has been a shadow of the player he was before all his injuries. No Mick Foley or Emmet Bolton for the O'Byrne Cup either. Alan Smith, Daryl Flynn and Hugh McGrillen has been flagged up beforehand.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

Cathal McNally also missing from that list.

Interesting team. Farrell at corner back is a strange one considering he plays midfield for Castledermot. Good to see Daryl O'Brien getting a long over-due chance with Kildare.

Fionn Dowling in there again, I've literally never seen this guy have a good game for the seniors. Baffling.

    Great to have it back!

Great to see Kelly and Doyle back. Kildare need to keep them fit if we are to do anything this year.

The lack of new potential midfielders is a concern for the year ahead.

I don't think we will learn much new about some of our forwards in an O'Byrne Cup match and the only real benefit of playing them is match fitness ahead of the league. I suppose the new round robin format requires the panel to be rotated with the games in quick succession but I thought we might have seen some more experimentation with Danny Egan or Cian Bolton getting a go.

He has size and speed and is still young, surely has to be his last chance to step up though.

The trouble with Dowling is that he seems to be perennially injured. Maybe with a run of games under his belt he might start to develop a bit of confidence and find some form. He was as good an underage player as Fogarty and Mulhall if not better.

You always seem to hear that he's flying in training and after scoring a goal and a few points in some obscure challenge match. I hope he doesn't turn into one of those players who never lives up to the hype at senior level. He's running out of chances with forwards like Healy, Flynn, Fitzpatrick, McMonagle etc likely to be getting their chance in the next few years.
