whats eating up my mac hard drive space?

hey folks, im still pretty new to mac, i bought a macbook pro very recently but today i was looking at the hard drive and it says 68GB of 500GB is used. so i was curious and noticed my pictures folder is 22GB and my music folder is 27GB, 22 + 27 = 47GB, so where or what is up with the other 21GB?? is there a way i can find out what exactly is eating up my hard drive and what folders are taking space etc? or is the 21gb or so normally used up for apps, pre installed OS etc.!! advice please, thanks!

I could be mistaken, but I think there's a tool or something you can use that will give you some sort of breakdown of what's being used between apps and files, etc. Someone here might know.

You can either use Daisydisk or Disk Inventory X. They'll give you a breakdown of what's using your hard drive space.

Right-click on the Applications folder and Get Info to see how much space your apps are using. Some apps can be be very large.

The OS itself uses about 7GB.

When you buy a computer brand new the harddrive won't be empty.

Space will be taken up by the operating system and any software supplied with the operating system as standard... That's where your extra space is gone.

Yep, Disk Inventory X is free! Here is a download link.

I'm pretty sure, with a fresh install of OSX including Garageband with all samples or whatever, it took up 20GBish of HD space
