Looked tempting initially but then I saw the specs. No wonder it's going for that price!

What's wrong with the specs? 3GB Memory and 320GB HDD seem more than adequate for a small notebook like that (13.3" is a very nice size). The dedicated graphics with its own 512MB DDR3 should be quite good as well and besides HDMI and Bluetooth it even sports an eSATA-port. Together with the Core i3 this seems to be very good value for money.

I completely agree, they're great specs for a 300£ laptop! Core i3 and dedicated graphics, that really is a great deal... That could almost be considered a competitor to, say, a basic macbook, for way way less than half the price..

Thought it had to be ordered through an Irish retailer to get the cashback?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,791 ✭✭✭Linoge

I would defo go for this but for the anti glare screen :-(

Naturally some far better laptops in the 13inch ultraportable range but at this price you would be struggling to find one.

Note the GPU isn't great, better the stock intergrated but not a huge amount better than the new intergrated gpu on the new sandybridge i-cores. Don't expect it to game above low to mid settings.

Again good price and nice find op.

Is this not a better laptop? A little bit dearer but bigger hard drive and more RAM.

Not really comparing like with like there, dont think the same people would be considering a 15.6" and a 13.3" laptop. And that one doesn't have dedicated graphics. The extra bit of ram wont mean much in performance, and that extra bit of storage doesnt cost much these days

I tried to get a printer in the UK and avail of the cashback deal.. HP informed me that the printer etc. had to be purchased in Ireland. They do the cashback via a bank transfer and the transfer will only be made to an account in the country of purchase...

Thats what I was told, you can try n purchase from the UK but there's no guarantee you'll get ur cashback..

No Bluetooth either, HP has 5 hr battery life. I have a 15.6" glossy, perfer using the work 14" antiglare screen which this has. Next Laptop I get will be a 13.3/14" antiglare.

Weird comment, there's nothing wrong with the specs

Any dual core processor from the last 3 years is more than capable, 3 or 4 gigs of ram is optimal.

    Very good bargain

Not a weird comment at all and there is nothing wrong with the specs at all, it's just too expensive for what you get.

Think you will be doing very well to find a non ULV core 13inch in this price bracket, particularly with (albeit relatively low) dedicated gpu.

I'm in the market for a new laptop and won't be getting this one! :)

I called the hp cashback helpline and they said you can buy in the uk and use the irish site to claim the money,
you need an iban number to get the cashback.

Tread carefully - the offer terms and conditions say it's for UK residents only:

The promotion is open to residents of the mainland UK including Northern Ireland, Channel Islands and Isle of Man. This offer is not open to employees of Hewlett Packard (HP), their agents, wholesalers, resellers, retail staff, retailers, participating stockists or anyone connected with the promotion.

Has anyone asked the retailer about the cashback offer ? Had a similar problem like this before (different UK retailer). Special bonus advertised on their .ie website was only applicable to the UK. Very frustrating experience that one was!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 85 ✭✭kumar_aq

Cashback for this part number is available in Ireland too. http://www.hpcashback.com/ie/laptops/ Now we need to know if HP will entertain the cashback application if we bought this from a UK retailer but shipped to Ireland. Does anyone have the email supporting this?

Well you better start aiming for second-hand or refurbished because you'll be hardpressed to find a better specced ultraportable for 300 sterling I can tell you that much

Although maybe you could bulk order 100 of them without VAT and get a "great discount" :pac:

Nows the time to be buying these Core i series laptops. The 2nd gen is in and the 1st gen are all going at clearance prices! Prices will continue to plummit until the end of August and then we'll see the next generation laptops only. Everything at fantastic prices

I often download 10gb video files, but then transfer those to my media player. Would this laptop be able to process these large files for hd out into my HD receiver? Would the graphics and processor have enough oomph?

    Cheers......

    serious deal here methinks....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 553 ✭✭✭TakeTheVeil

You'd be more limited by USB2.0 than the CPU and GPU

Edit: And the HDD, but it's 7200rpm, so you should be fine on all fronts

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,098 ✭✭✭Johnny_Fontane

sorry this laptop has hdmi out, so I'm gonna put my hdmi cable from the laptop into my receiver.....just wondering if it could handle a large mkv file....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 553 ✭✭✭TakeTheVeil

    Sorry, may have misread that.

Yeah, it should be able to handle 1080p MKV playback easily. Especially with the correct codecs and VLC or MPClassic.

Most integrated GPUs can handle 1080p video containers now, so I wouldn't worry at all.

I bought this. I need to wait until September before I can claim cashback as since Aug 1st the claim window is from 30 days till 60days.

Coming from a Mac it's pretty hard to get used to. Took nearly 2 minutes to boot with all the crap on the thing. I uninstalled the lot of it and boot times are back to 1 minute.

Trackpad is really weird. The trackpad is a giant button so if you push the bottom left, it's a left click. push the bottom right, it's a right click. Gesture scrolling is as bad as on any windows laptop.

It REALLY bugs me though that when I'm typing and my palms touch off the trackpad, the cursor goes flying. I think the mac has me spoilt with the accidental touch detection.

HP have some god awful dumb power defaults too. You need to manually go into power settings to get it to sleep when you close the lid.

I think in general it's a decent machine, it is absolutely covered in ports. HDMI, USB. I even saw a card reader on it! Really good connectivity.

For an i3 with 3GB RAM I think it's worth the 350 euro after cashback

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,060 ✭✭✭darkmaster2

    I sent mine back.

Awful touch pad, blurry screen, slow... Generally crap.

Maybe mine was just a dodgy one, but
I would stay away from this anyway.

Lotta people buy laptops and netbooks based on "specs".

They forget that trackpad, screen, etc are nearly more important

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,098 ✭✭✭Johnny_Fontane

i bought this too....and the trackpad is pretty bad.....but tbh I have an Ipad for fast browsing.

This machine is mostly for downloading and hdmi

I bought this last week as well, got it delivered this morning, I thought I'd share my thoughts so far:

    Accessories & Extras:
Not much comes with the laptop in terms of accessories, its basically just laptop ,charger and a pretty decent laptop shoulder bag. No recovery discs.

    Look of the laptop:
Its a pretty nice looking laptop, i like the brushed metal finish. It is fatter than i expected but not too bad. Basically the style of the laptop is very nice, the shape however is a little clunky. It wont be winning awards for aesthetics but it is nice.

    Weight:
It is a little heavier than other 13 inch laptops I've used but its also the only one that had a disc drive. IMO Its about the weight of an average modern laptop.

    Ports:
Has mentioned previously it has plenty of port options. They are all listed in the spec, but there is also a card reader that is not mentioned. Headphone slots are at the front, which I don't really like.

    Bloatware:
Wow! Its full of the bloody stuff! You are first to ask to setup the laptop (standard windows 7 setup procedure) but then you are asked to register with HP. Eventually you will be brought to the main desktop. I spent about 30 mins uninstalling stuff i didnt think was needed.

    Keyboard:
Keyboard is actually very nice, feels very responsive and they keys are not bunched together like some smaller laptops. Arrow keys are half size, but it is to be expected on smaller laptops.

    Touchpad
As previously mentioned its a bit of a let down. Its not awful, but it is poor. It takes a little getting used to.

If you find yourself tapping the touchpad by mistake If you are doing extended amounts of typing you could switch it off, double tap the little dot in the top left of the touch pad. You can also enable a handy feature that disables the touch pad when you have an external mouse plugged in.

I haven't accidently touched the touch pad yet though i guess it wont effect everyone.

    Overall
Its nice and quick laptop, that is a nice portable size.

People doing a lot of travelling will probably have better options, for example my GF has an 13" acer timeline and it is lighter, slimmer and the battery last a few hours longer. The acer wouldnt have the horse power this does though.

Its roughly €350 once you get your tax back, at that price its seems to be a very good price. Time will tell I guess!

Thinking about getting the hp probook.

I know some already got confirmation about Ireland being ok but I just got this when I asked them :

    Dear Sir/Madame,

You will be eligible for the cash back offer as long as you purchase a
qualifying product and are a UK resident.
    This include Northern Ireland,
Our full terms and conditions can be viewed at
    http://www.hpcashback.com/uk/laptop/terms/

It seems to be over after august so I need to hurry.

I wouldn't bother getting it if the cashback won't be given to me :(

    Any update on it ?

Got an email saying it's fine if your in Ireland to get the cashback now. They also said you can claim straight away but it says 30 days on the site :S

The problems with the touchpad are putting me off a bit, are they really that bad ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,264 ✭✭✭witnessmenow

    A couple of weeks on:

Touchpad is ok. I've gotten used to it now and i find myself taking out my mouse less and less. I still would prefer a different one but if the laptop ticks all the other boxes for you i wouldnt let this put you off.

Battery life: 4-5 hours my arse! I get just over 3 i'd say, and thats without doing anything hectic or having the screen up bright. Maybe there is somethign chewing up my battery that i have overlooked. If large battery is essential this isnt the laptop for you.

    Audio problem:
I'm having a bit of an issue with the audio on mine. Described in better detail here. I've been in my home house for the last couple of weeks so im not using my laptop for listening to music (Using my PC) So I havent diagnosed the problem properly (like does it only happen when im streaming music on chrome, is it only google talk that interupts it etc)

I know im only listing problems here, but it total Im still happy with the purchase and if i was given €350 to buy a laptop I would buy this one again! I dont think there is anything close to it for the same money.
