Haemmeroids and weight lifting

Some of you may have read my post last week looking for newbie gym advice: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056327210

Basically it's been going great. Been 4 times and really enjoyed it and have made a few adjustments to my diet to help. I think I can actually notice some fat off my stomach already!

But a bit of a problem has developed :-(

I would be quite prone to haemmeroids, they flare up from time to time and as a result I have to have a high fibre diet.

After my third workout, I noticed that they were quite sore and after last night's one they were very sore. I got stuff in the chemists to treat them today. However, the chemist said that lifting weights often makes them worse.

Now I'm seeing a specialist for them in September anyway, but I'm wondering have any of you had any experience of them and how did you deal with weightlifting? Does anyone have any tips? I really don't want to stop working out now that I have finally taken the plunge :-( Thanks

I get them from lifting but haven't had any problems with them in a couple of years. If I get them I just take a week or two off lifting and bathe them in hot water twice a day.

As you are a beginner to lifting your glutes and core are probably weak, as they get stronger you may find that the 'roids don't flare up as often.

For when they do clear up I was going to suggest wearing tight underwear to try to prevent them recurring. But a quick google says to do the opposite and wear loose underwear, that might be to minimise irritation of 'roids that are already flared up though. Ask your doc :)

Box squats are best avoided :D

It's great that some of you find it so humerous.

I was going to agree until I seen your username.

Didn't mean to pile on the misery......

Seriously though, I do recommend Farmer's Walks despite their puntastic name. They use a lot of muscle groups, burn a lot of calories and I'd pretty sure you'd be able to do them without aggravating anything.

Here's a cool article with various sequences combining farmer's walk with other exercises:

Some of the exercises involved might be off-limits to you (I'd imagine lunges would hurt a lot) but you can find what exercises you can do and then combine them with the Farmer's Walks.

Rushing out but certain movements will make them worse.

For example heavy squats can resemble the WC movement. If you currently have them - note what makes them worse and avoid.

Someone who has/had them said push it or them back up - easier said than done imo.

BTW - A lot more people have them than admit it so you are not alone.

    Best of luck mate.
