Any sign of these? Any rumours? Mid July and still nothing!
UPC promising the world as usual and delivering nothing!

I was told "could be next month" when I queried it, "but nothing definite".....make of that what you will!! The twitter feeds are hinting at something soon in the way of new technologies(red button? iPhone app?) so maybe new channels as part of a bigger launch of these?

Yes. But believe us, letter states 500GB download allowance, changes to terms and conditions. Usual 1 month cancellation policy applies and two new channels from Sept.

You should have it before I would be able to scan it.

"From 5th September 2011, there will also be a few changes to UPC pricing which will affect some customers. Only one-third of customers will receive any price increases, the majority of whom will experience increases from €1-€2 on their monthly subscription," the company said.

UPC is also introducing two new channels to its line-up from 5 September: the Food Network and True Movies.

True Movies and The Food Network not bad.

However we lost 3 ITV channels plus Bravo and Virgin One closed.

3 more channels and I would be happy.

Watch and a couple of CBS channels would be nice also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,769 ✭✭✭Infoanon

UPC's CEO stated that 5 new channels would be available, some in June the rest in July and that the channels would be equivalent to the lost ITV's.

Now UPC announce a price increase of €1-2 per month (details very hazy) and that True movies (a below par channel) and the food network will be added from September.

UPC are taking the proverbial at this stage - can someone confirm if True movies is FTA on Sky ?

If UPC have announced these 2 channels then it is unlikely IMO that any further additional channels will be added

Bottom line we have got MGM HD, BBC1 HD and the possibility of True Movies and The Food channel! Odds are any more channels we get will be of similar state so expect The GOD channel and those Caribbean channels to be activated if any!

UPC have a good sports service and really need to push this area. This is the only reason Im with them anyway!

True movies is mostly made for tv drama movies aimed at female viewers. Its already available on freesat, sky & virgin. Shame. Isn't saorview having full launch around Sept? Maybe the others will be rte2 hd and rte news now?

That would be poor form if the HD channels are included as replacements, I can't avail of HD services in sallynoggin so no benefit to me or anyone else that can't get the service, having said that True Movies is a pi$$ poor excuse for a replacement. There must be better FTA channels that they can go after or channel 5, just no more plus ones..

I'm trying to find out if we are only getting True Movies 1 or the whole True Movies "network". I really dislike when UPC carry only part of a "network" which cross promotes it's other channels. It may as well be an advertisement for SKY by highlighting what you don't have.

I think they want us to pirate, maybe that's why they are fighting the 3 strikes rule.

Loosing several half decent channels, replaced with not totally useless ones and increasing our download limits. I suppose the band width is already there, and they own it, so we may as well use it.

Any changes to the 100meg usage mentioned?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,769 ✭✭✭Infoanon

True Movies is a Free to air channel, owned by CSC Media - previously they provided Bliss/The Amp/Flaunt

Food network is also a free to air channel, owned by Scripps network

The UPC advisory is still that similar content channels shall be added to the networkto replace the loss of ITV2/3/4

The price increase,€1 to €2 per month shall apply to 'certain' customers - no further detail from UPC - can't see how UPC can justify an increase but that won't stop them !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,769 ✭✭✭Infoanon

The only additional channel on UPC is Setanta - Vs all the additional interactive services on Sky Sports - football/rugby etc and additional channels eg Motors TV

Think Sky might win out on that one - most of Setanta's programming is on ESPN, while the prime premier league games tend to be on PPV Setanta 1

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,243 ✭✭✭LighterGuy

    So ...
UPC took away ITV 1, 2 and 3. And now replacing them with the food network and true movies? ... and those two new ones are free if you have FTA/Freesat. Heck even the ITVs are on FTA/Freesat.

So ... its yet another reason to switch to freesat :D

While if agree that its a good deal for sky subscribers, the beauty of upc's offering is that you get espn as part of the normal tv package.its for this very reason that I canceled sky sports about a year ago, complete rip off imo, and unjustifiable when espn and eurosport (along with what's available fta champions league,f1, magners league etc) satisfy most of MY sporting needs :)

HD Sports is also much cheaper with UPC, €5 opposed to €15 with Sky per month! Not defending them, if I could get out of my contract with UPC and jump ship to Sky I would!

well obviously it would:p sky have 47 hd channels, upc have 10 or under? kinda justifies the difference in price

Found out it's True Movies 1 only. No TM2 or TM Entertainment.

Thanks for that - have never understood UPC's approach to adding nw channels - whats the point of Sky Arts without Sky Arts 2, or the UKTV channels' without 'Watch' ?

The irony is that they are all FTA channels (TM1/2/TME)

Anyword or more detail on the price increase ?

I've been following the twitter feeds and they seem to think it's a coup to get these two channels, all smiley faces when they mention them!!

Well, in the case of UKTV channels, they are pretty much individual entities and worth watching in their own right. The lack of Watch is a fairly big hole though, particularly since GOLD decided to concentrate on comedy and Alibi on crime/detective. I miss the other old BBC stuff that used to be on UK Gold but move to Watch.

I think they got a bollocking the last time for sneaking in the price increase and not properly informing the customers so hopefully we'll at least get a letter this time

Wrong. If they change the price then they must give you the option of getting out of the contract. that's basic contract law. That's also what happened the last time they upped their prices.

Eldlerlemon, can you say no to the price increase and insist that your package remains the same?

I received a letter this morning to say that as my broadband speed was increasing that the price of my monthly bill was going to go up by €2.
I rang UPC to say that I did not want the increased broadband speed and was told that as 20MB is now the lowest speed available that I have to pay the extra or cancel the contract. (They are still however selling 12MB on their website).

This doesn't seem right. Has anybody else had this issue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,014 ✭✭✭elderlemon

You can't insist on them keeping an old product active. However if they continue to sell the 12mb product (which as you say is still here on their site) then they should not be able to stop you from sticking with it. Don't tale the CS word - write them a letter and insist on staying with the 12mb product.

I assume you got the same letter as me - Sept 5th does not apply to new channels AND UPC's themselves cannot give an official date for the new channels.

Price increase - BB up to €25 - thats €36 in the last year and I would guess a further TV increase is on its way in January

    My mistake - different letters,

My letter is Broadband Speed increase from 11 July, BB Usage allowance increase from 5th Sept, 2 New 'exciting' channels (Pathetic), Price increase - €25 for 20mb and 2 changes in terms and conditions.

Just looked at UPC's twitter feed and they are saying dates for new channels unavailable at the moment - it would seem to make sense to launch them on Sept 5th but who knows whats going on in UPC towers.
