Do you pronounce 'To' just the same as you pronounce 'Too'?

I make a distinction myself, although now and again I catch myself saying 'tooh' instead of 'tuh'.

Are 'To' and 'Too' pronounced indentically? 69 votes

No, they shouldn't sound the same when spoken.

I never use prepositions. It's what keeps me young.

"2" in isolation, but usually in the middle of a sentence in casual conversation it'll be squished between words into a "tuh" sound.

I pronounce it 'too' as in toot without the 't' on the end.

'Too' is pronounced similarly except the ooh is longer....toooo

    Toooooo.

I remember in primary school a teacher trying to teach us that 'to' should be pronounced 'tuh', with the 'toooo' pronunciation just for 'too' and 'two'. I wanted to tell her she was very wrong.

pronounce them the same, but then to make sure people recognise Im being gramatically correct I say 'T' 'double O' in air quotes afterwards

This seems familiar. I wonder is that educational policy or is it personal preference of the teacher.

It certainly makes the error of "going too the shops" and "drinking to much" more obvious.

To is pronounced like two, or too, and just like the To in tomorrow.

Didn't know there was any other way

To be honest, you'd sounds a bit special talking like that.

So if To is not pronounced as Too, or Two, then how should you pronounce to?

Surely they are all pronounced in the same way, albeit with different spellings & different meanings.

    Basic stuff really ......................

get dictaphone, say into it "I have to get this too" as naturally as you can.

load to computer, chop to and too out and play them over each other or if you have fancy sound programs you can see the sound wave pattern!

get back to us with the results.

    I'm fascinated.

    Would that be "intuh" ?

P.S. OP - what's "indentically" ? Is it where you say "[tab]" ?

It would for me, like the 'to' in 'tomatoes'.

Tin Foil Hat on page one has it, with /tə/. Edit: And pickarooney.

The "ə" is called a "schwa" sound (stupid name, I know). It's basically what we squish vowel sounds into when they're not very important.

Essentially, if we pronounced every syllable in every word we said, it'd take forever to say anything and it'd sound very strange. It's one of the reasons early computer voices sounded so wrong.

Actually, in that case I'd stress the 'o' and pronounce it 'intoo' because it's before a vowel sound. Thinking about it now, I would say 'tuh' or 'intuh' before a consonant sound but not before a vowel sound. For example: "I'm going tuh go intuh town now, and appear naked too everyone."

Exactly, you notice the difference with lots of people whose mother tongues are mainly phonetic like Spanish or Italian when they speak English, and have lots of trouble with the schwa.
For example, they'd say "capital" with the second "a" sounding exactly like the first. It's a tough area for English learners as it's not often clear when to use "ə".

You can't pull the o away from the e like that! So the first 'to', of course.
