Hello all, I just came across 500px today. I'm very impressed with standard of the images being posted. Would be well worth a look if you haven't visited the site already.

I joined it the other day. It's 'nicer' than Pix.ie and Flickr.

There's still loads of mediocre photographs on it, but because it's limited to 20 of them a week, there's just less. You'll still come across them though!

But there's some great work uploaded there too :)

Great link, thanks for sharing Kelly1.

Signed up a few weeks ago

    it has a nice layout
apparently a big threat to Flickr

There is a hell of a lot of surrealist and nude stuff on there. That said it's still a nice site and a lot of what Ive seen is fairly decent! I haven't uploaded anything yet but I will. Just want to upload the good stuff :p

edit: I have to add that there is nothing wrong with surrealistic or nude stuff.. Only it makes browsing in work kinda awkward when they both come up at the same time :P

That's a real world of example of something I was doing in 3Dsmax and blender a few years ago. I think it was called HDR mapping or something like that. Basically if I had a chrome sphere, and I wanted an image reflected in it then I had to map a very large skybox of an image(it would wrap itself around the environment as though it were the sky I guess) that would look all blurry and out of focus if you turned the camera toward it, but would wrap and resolute in the sphere. He bloody well knows what he's at anyway! Beautiful image for what it is!

I'm in there too. Love the portfolio option.

I just signed up and uploaded a batch of shots from Montenegro.

    http://500px.com/dairequinlan

I like the portfolio view all right, with its vanity URL format ...
    http://dairequinlan.500px.com

I really REALLY don't like that there's no batch uploader for it, the uploader on the upload page is like being back in the flickr dark ages again, plus it randomly screwed up for me, It took about 3 tries to upload 10 pictures. Then there's no batch editor either, you have to go individually into each picture and edit. Bleurgh.

tl;dr : Looks really nice but needs a serious usability overhaul.

Incidentally, if anyone is looking for a good free batch downloader for flickr they could do worse than http://sunkencity.org/flickredit Had a problem for some reason when I tried to search by tags and then download, it wouldn't let me, but when I added the shots into a set on flickr and searched by the set I was allowed select them all and download. YMMV.

    D.

I'm after signing up to see what all the fuss was about and I really like it :pac:

I like the large view of the photo which is huge compared to pix.ie
It looks clean and very modern
I like the way the EXIF info shows at the side and you don't have to go looking for it

Overall, I really like it :P

Checking this out too. Got a burst of views and a few comments on two photos so must have been featured on the site somewhere.

If anyone is upgrading to the full account - use the promo code "friends" to get $10 off.

Signed up myself, some really impressive work on there. I was having a browse around and found that Andy Rouse the renowned wildlife photographer is a poster. Now my selections to post just became more difficult:o

Wow, thanks for the link. This wipes the floor with Flickr.

There really are some great features: blog, portfolio site, selling prints etc. It also seems like a great community. I've had a load of activity and I've only been on the thing an hour.

The standard of the photography is excellent too.

I'm seriously depressed after looking at that site. Some AMAZING photos on it. Really really like it. I've signed up but have yet to actually put anything up. Terrified!

The Editors/Popular section is both depressing and inspiring in equal measures. Really need to up my game. :)

I think it's a great site, very inspiring and very daunting! You'd only put your very best work up there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,014 ✭✭✭Eirebear

Just signed up too, only uploaded a few images thus far - gonna try and keep this a little tidier and with a bit of a higher standard than the photo dump which has become my flickr account.

Do you need to pay to get the portfolio bit?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 4,948 ✭✭✭pullandbang

Nope, with the free account you get to do one portfolio and you can add to or subtract from it. However you are limited to just one selection of shots (not sure if there's a limit to the number of shots in it though).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 749 ✭✭✭BlastedGlute

Serious talent up there. The "popular" listing looks like a national geo photographs of the year presentation. Monster skills and very inspiring

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,689 ✭✭✭joeKel73

From what I can see there's not equivalent to Flickr's sets is there? Would like to be able to send someone a collection from a certain event or day...

The only way I see is to use the portfolio feature to form collections. Would prefer to use the portfolio as a best-of webpage though.

I uploaded a load of stuff but some of the comments from people are wierd. Not really a place for family photography so I took all my stuff back down. Some of the photographs up there are seriously amazing though and I love all the features on it.

weird how weird ? Evidently you've never encountered the slightly more ... disturbing ... side of flickr. Anyone faves my stuff on flickr I check their existing faves. That's resulted in me blocking quite a few people with a certain creepy consistency to their favourites list.

Aye, it did strike me that you are pretty candid with what you share on Flickr Daire. The majority of the pics of my family are set to non public, purely for the reason that you're getting at.

There are some not right people out there.

Though it's a real shame that we have to consider this and it hampers sharing family photos, as honestly the ones you post Daire are stunning.

PS I swear I'm not of the them, please don't block me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 716 ✭✭✭squareballoon

I dunno, like 'I hate kids but this one looks like an angel. Enjoy her' I've never had stuff like that on Flickr although I know of other people who have.

I really don't understand this mindset. As long as you don't include information that discloses where you live etc, why do you care? There are sick people in the world, but what they do with a photograph of my children doesn't affect me or my children in the slightest.

Having said that, my wife would agree with you 100%.

I'm pretty much with DougL on this one. Besides, I think it's more scaremongering and sensationalism than anything concrete, similar to the 'predatory paedophiles taking pictures of your kids in playgrounds' thing that seems to get people worked up every now and again.

The problems I had weren't in any way kid related funnily enough, more weird fetish people. That picture of my brother smoking a cigar for example managed to garner quite a bit of interest amongst a certain subset of flickroonis. That led to a few blockings. Pictures of my sister in cowboy boots, or my wife's socks. It all seems quite innocent until you click into the rest of their faves and sometimes it's a bit ... ewwwww ...

Funny you should say that, I had to convince my wife that I could put pics up of our wee Joe and control who could see them, so that family could take a wee gander but not the public at large.

I just can't reconcile that between my head and my heart. I know logically and practically that's true, but something about it just doesn't sit right with me.

Maybe I've been more affected by sensationalistic reporting than I thought.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭DougL

There are a whole generation of kids who's lives are going undocumented because society is worried about the possibility that some ars*hole is out there w*nking over the pictures. Now *that* makes me feel sick to my stomach.

Just wait until governments start using this mindset to justify banning photographs of children in public places. Say goodbye to street photography, among many other things.

Sorry...this topic winds me up, and I'm dragging this thread off topic. :)

    Agree with DougL also.

    Embrace the positive.

Spend less time worrying about a small minority of sick people.

All this negative thinking 'oh, there's a chance some perv might look at the photo of my kid' is what has the world gone wrong.

Aye, but the reverse is also true, I might be out and about on my own and see a kid that reminds me of my son, I start smiling to myself, I then sometimes think, do people think I'm the creepy bad guy?

    Grrr, society.

is 500px just another* flickr, pix.ie, photobucket defined by its community with little else, or is there something more to it that i'm missing? have only briefly visited so I may be missing the principal point of it.

    * I think there is plenty of room for just another.......

pretty much. It's new and shiny, and has gotten some huge injection of funding recently, and a few big names, which is why it seems to be name-checked all over the place.

There are some things that potentially it does much better than flickr, and it looks a lot nicer, but on the flipside there isn't anywhere near as much 'community' around it, no groups for example.

I like the way you can't have your stuff nicked directly from the site. A la Flickr/Chrome. Cute when you right click an image too! :D

em.... nope (if I understand you correctly)

    - Click through, Right Click, Save As ????

    Noting stopping a download?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,026 ✭✭✭kelly1

Right click doesn't work but if you view the source, you can enter the URL for the image directly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,277 ✭✭✭mehfesto

Really? I'm using chrome, I right click and get 'Hey, this photo is (copyright symbol) Sean...'. Weird.

However, I'm only noticing, If I repeatedly right click, I can get the 'Inspect Element' option up, which you can trawl through to find the url. Hmmm. There's nowhere safe.

Had some girl removing my watermark and claiming my images were hers yesterday. Had her blog closed down. Thought 500px was my answer. Alas, no!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,075 ✭✭✭dakar

I have prepared a helpful venn diagram which illustrates the relationship between the internet and its intersection with those places which allow your pictures to be viewed publicly without fear of them being copied, stolen or otherwise lifted.

    hd00.jpg

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 749 ✭✭✭BlastedGlute

    Screenshot is all you need.

    *for those who don't know*

Press the "prntscrn" button up next to scroll lock on your keyboard. Open paint, press "ctrl-V", then just cut out the image, put it on your blog and feel the praise roll in! :P

That venn diagram really explains it all, if you can see the image online, you can steal it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 564 ✭✭✭WillyWonka

Some great images there, very high standard. Although they seem to be processed to within a pixel of their life!!

Some great photos that just look like graphic designer work :(
