Just a couple of questions. 20 year old..about 5'11, weigh over 14 stone. Need to lose around 1 stone. Have a bit of excess fat on my stomach that I want to lose but the worst is my backside ha. I am a big build which is why I am 14 stone. I want to lose the fat but also put on muscle. That being said I dont want to have 14 stone of muscle. I exercise a lot, roughly 4/5 times a week. Bit of running, cycling, swimming and also in the gym quite a lot. Doing a lot of work in the gym especially core work. Would you suggest to take Whey protein to lose the extra fat. I also heard that taking a shake is like having a meal and is very good for not craving for food which is a big problem for me. Eat a load and it is hard to control..Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Technically since whey is protein, and protein has calories, just mindlessly adding whey into your diet will cause you to gain weight...

Wasn't there a thread a while back where some guy got slaughtered for saying this? Very entertaining.

if you lift then whey is good because its protein dense in terms of calories.

so if you need 200g of protein a day and need to keep your calories under 2k, you can achieve this a lot more easily with whey than you would with chicken and fish. this isnt to say you should replace them completely but a shake or two a day can help you hit your protein goals.

if you dont lift and just run/cycle dont bother with it, just re-adjust your diet.

Wouldn't whey be a bad choice cause its a higher GI then other proteins like casein in terms of having a shake as a meal?

Lower GI proteins could be WHEY better........ *facepalm*

I take protein for weightlifting and putting on weight as muscle, and my 3 shakes a day give me 120gr protein but also give me 600 cals, not exactly enticing for weight loss would it?

No. Just no. A little knowledge here is a massively dangerous thing.

No, which is why you need to take kcals from elsewhere and create a deficit.

How is that a good thing for a guy trying to lose weight?
It would make more sense to go for foods that are harder to rack up the protein/calories. That way satiation levels are far higher than a whey heavy diet.

more protein for less calories = easier to stay in a deficit.

i said that he shouldnt have a whey heavy diet and that chicken, fish and tuna should be the bulk of it.

Take whey if you lift weights otherwise don't bother with it.

How can he have more protein for less calories???
25g protein = 100 calories, regardless of source.

Are you are talking about associated fats are carbs that come with the protein?
If so, lean chicken is essentially only protein so slightly better then whey. This is minor and isn't going to make for break your diet.

Unless somebody has a good grasp on macros, I wouldn't recomend whey as part of a weight loss diet. THe fact that the OP asked the question, means they prob don't have a good grasp.

Having a protein shake with the likes of a banana thrown in with it is much better than going to the chipper or having a lash of sandwiches of an evening :)

It's worse than a lot of things tho.

Eat well and train hard. Buy one copy of men's health and it will have some easy to follow diet advice for fat loss(every issue is the same IMO)

You will NOT gain 14 stone of muscle just from training and eating well, those are stats a pro bodybuilder has and would take 20 odd years of work. So for weight loss, train hard, eat well, live right (don't stack yourself full of beer every weekend)

Your body looks the way it does as a result of your lifestyle. If you want your body to change then your life has to follow suit. Good luck with it.

Closeline - a supplement is an addition to your diet. It makes up for a possible shortfall in your daily dietary requirements. Like a multi-vit provides for any shortfall in vitamins etc.

Whey protein isn't a 'weight loss' product. It provides extra protein. People take it as it's a convenient source of protein. But if you're trying to lose some lard you need to factor in the calorie content of your shake into your daily/weekly calorie count. You should be running a deficit. This means consuming less cals than you expend through being alive and exercise.

Take a look at the stickies.

No doubt it is but it's not worse than a trip to the chipper or a lash of sandwiches which was my point.

But its not a useful bit of information.
Yes its better than a feed from the chipper, but does anyone need to be told that? Just because its better than the worst option out there, doesn't make it a good option.

I mean a cheeseburger and small chips is quite a bit better than a double burger and large chips.

There isn't anything bad about a whey and banana shake, but its a pretty poor choice for somebody trying to lose weight.

Ok thanks. I probable put it wrong. There is surely some sort of shake out there that can help get rid of the extra weight in the same way that protein helps to put on the extra muscle.

Protein works by helping to increase kcals. By doing that, you gain weight. Guess how you reduce weight?

Just a thought, but would you reduce weight by lowering calories?...

Low carb whey protein could be the answer for the OP.

Something like Pro Matrix from Nutrition X.
It's 73% protein and 3 servings of it per day mixed with water would give you 354kcals as opposed to 600kcals.

Dont just look at the carb content of your whey protein, also look at the amount of sugar in it.

I know there are better proteins out there but for €40 or so per tub, you cant go wrong in my opinion and using low carb protein like this one has helped me drop 4 stone in the last 2 years or so.
