I personally would like to see Clarke win tomorrow but having just watched a professional golfer mid round at the open smoking really pisses me off.

Played with a junior member a few months ago and was shocked to see him smoking walking down the 1st fairway.

He should not be allowed to smoke on the course during a major it's disgusting and is a terrible example to young golfers who are seeing that.

    So what?

As a non-smoker I find it a terrible habit but for people fond of the cancer sticks and under pressure then 4.5 hours is a long way to go without one! It's an addiction.

I do agree with your sentiment thought and I can also see why others wouldn't care.

    C'mon Darren!

Judging by your alarmist reaction, I can only assume he was stabbing someone to death while smoking... no??

Has the same effect as seeing Newcastle united fans with their 20 bellies on show in January!

It's a known problem and the only way to solve it is to have plenty of psychiatrists available for these young idiots who take their lead from blokes on the telly.

Alternatively commission a proper study into the effect of bad habits by sports stars on young people. Amass enough evidence to back it up as a serious issue other than something based on your own personal dislikes and hey presto maybe people will do something about it.

He then proceeded to eat the babies. Disgusting stuff from Darren. Setting a bad example for young golfers.

The whole day's coverage contained a 3-4 second clip of Clarke cupping a smoke and having a drag. Dig up Mary Whitehouse and get her on the case. Down with this sort of thing.

    Damn right.
You wouldn't see tiger woods sparking up after a hot sweaty lovemaking session with someone other than his wife.

This is what you spend your time thinking about?

I'm more worried about these extravagant clothes the players are now wearing. Pink tops, polka dots, white trousers.

The kids will be homosexuals in no time.

The only thing that will disgust me about Clarke is if he has a shank on the morrow.

Tour performance. Come on Darren !

the young kids that are smoking generally don't watch golf

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,143 ✭✭✭flanzer

He kind of redeemed himself in the interview after when asked about all the fans following him....he responded by something on the lines that most fans can relate to him because he not the typical athlete but likes to go out and enjoy himself and have a few pints!

So what anyway? It's his life. I'm sure he'd be the first person to say he'd rather not be smoking seeing as he lost his wife and the mother of his kids, to cancer

C'mon Darren..you seem to be in a good place right now and deserve it

I hope you didnt watch the darts about 15 years ago, they had to smoke at least 2 packets of fags every game, they were breathalaysed before the game to make sure they had drank at least 10 pints of beer and had an adjudacter at their table to confirm they consumed at least another 10 pints during the game.

Haha we were smoking cigars a while back and one of my friends was inhaling them. He was coughing like **** after every puff. Only copped on after 10 minutes that you weren't supposed to inhale. To make matters worse he has asthma. Bit of a gobshíte of a chap haha

It really is quite bizarre why anti smokers feel they can castigate people who are doing something thoroughly legal and entirely common.

You don't like smoking, fair enough. But ffs try to exercise a little discretion, Clarke smoking on a golf course has as much bearing on your life as a bus timetable in Laos.

Yes I didn't like to see Clarke smoking... but then remember that he only smoked between taking his shots... it it the BBC producer deciding what camera to pick ... he could have as easily showed some of the other action going on....

Saw a big queue in the clubhouse after DC won
The queue was at the fag machine
I plan to restart smoking again too when golfing to calm the nerves on the last few holes

I couldn't give a crap about him being a role model or not but a professional sportsman having a cigarette while competing looks terrible.

Other than darts and snooker and Teddy Sheringham at half time in the dressing room I can't think of any other sport where smoking was allowed. I'm open for correction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 821 ✭✭✭xgtdec

Does Clarke having a cigar on the fairway count as smoking in the workplace?

Why? Smoking is legal, what is the problem?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,296 ✭✭✭Frank Black

No problem with him smoking, but he just threw his butt on the ground when he was finished. This is littering and as a recent report into littering in Irish towns showed, cigarette butts make up over 50% of the litter recorded. It’s cigarette smokers attitude that their butts are not litter is the problem and Clarke’s ‘example’ will not make this message any easier to drive home.
