hi all, i've seen quite alot of people around town wearing skinny jeans and fashion critics like paul galvin seem quite keen on them. i'm just wondering do people like them and think they look good or are they too out-there/alternative? and for the ladies, do you find them attractive or just a turn off? so the main question is: are they now part of irish fashion pop culture or are they too risque to be accepted fully just yet?

I think they are fine on late teens/twenties - if you can't take risks then, when can you? But anyone post-college age who actually isn't a rock star can look a bit silly. And once the wee Irish potbelly starts kicking in - forget about it.

Wear them now while you still can!

Have these not been around for ages?

I prefer them to baggy jeans any day of the week. But I think once you graduate from college you should be going for slim cut (not skinny) jeans. They just look better.

I wear them well I own one pair, I quite like them tbh. I'm 18 and most of my mates would wear them too.

Are they still in fashion? Damn, thought their time had come and gone already.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

I really hate skinny jeans on guys; I don't know why, I just do - I actually shudder when I see them on guys, even those who can really pull them off (really, really skinny and very tall).

But that's just my opinion - if you like them and can pull them off, then go for it. However, as others have said, wearing them post-college is pushing it a little!

OP, don't expect an answer when asking "what do women like?", everyone has their own opinion!

Personally I like them. Most, if not all, of my male friends wear them. Anything from super skinnies, to a skinny/straight leg.

I think the straight leg looks best on most men, better than the boot cut in most cases anyway!

I'm old enough to remember when they were last in fashion. They look awful. I guarantee that 90% of people who wear them will spend the remaining years of their lives trying to track down photos of them in the jeans to destroy them.

Remember those flourescent shorts that were in at the end of the 80's? Sorta like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,037 ✭✭✭Shelga

In terms of attraction, I find them the most hideous article of clothing a man could ever, ever wear. I would be instantly and forever turned off a man who wore them. There's just something so incredibly feminine about them, I don't know if that's PC or not!

That said, I know some girls who are into the metro look on guys and love them.

I find them really unattractive. I know some people like them, and when I see guys wearing them I don't see anything wrong or ugly about it, but even though I don't think there's anything wrong with it, I'd also not be attracted to a guy wearing them. As much as clothes would ever matter in terms of attraction, they're an extremely big turn off for me.

    (fyi I'm female, 20)

I don't find them particularly appealing on guys either, tbh. I don't know what it is about them. They don't look bad or anything, I just don't like them. I think straight leg jeans are the way to go for guys. Bootcut and/or jeans halfway down your arse are a no too.

If your listening to Galvin on Fashion you may as well be reading Amanda Brunker novels.

Anyway, i think they look awful on majority of guys truly awful. There are so many better cuts and variety of denim out there to choose from.

Can’t stand skinny jeans on guys I just can’t take a guy seriously if he’s in skinny jeans. Fair enough there’s a quite a lot of trends that would make it impossible for me to take a woman seriously but fellas are normally so sensible… (assuming the hipster thing dies off soon, please god let it die soon) just avoid the skinny jeans guys please

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 519 ✭✭✭AnneElizabeth

I think skinny jeans should only be worn by girls, guys do not need trousers that tight. Straight-leg jeans are really nice on guys though (they're roughly the same width all the way down, so not tight but far from baggy).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,462 ✭✭✭Aisling(",)

I peronally dislike them, but that is not to say that they don't suit slim lads,my boyfriend is quite stocky and only suits combat styles so to an extent I say it is each to their own.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,455 ✭✭✭✭Monty Burnz

Slightly o/t, but I also think they look horrendous on women. They make their legs/asses look funny, even if they are perfectly normal. They are like distorting mirrors. Again, I don't think many people will realise this until they go out of fashion more or less overnight.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,189 ✭✭✭Ophiopogon

I agree with MONTY I never liked them on girls esp as girls on the shiorter side as I think it shows how short their legs are and make them look knida stumpy.

They seem to show up a terrible figure on either sex. I personaly hate the way they sit on boys bums(or lack of).

I know I still shudder about some of the things I wore in the 90's so I'm sure these jeans are going to be one of those items that will be the stuff of nightmares in years to come. :D

    they look horrendous

Men shouldn't wear them. Men shouldn't have skinny legs like girls.

Really not a fan of guys wearing skinny jeans, or the general trend of dressing femininely, next thing they'll be wearing leggings, *shudder*

I hate those skinny jeans, even though I'm pretty slim.

They're not good for your boys or testosterone. ;)

I like them but obviously they look a lot better when the person wearing them puts some effort into the rest of the outfit!!

(Also Paul Galvin seems to wear them ULTRA tight and they're not very flattering on him..)

Why ask that here, No offence but the majority of posters here haven't a focking clue about fashion. (Thats why they post here)

    I'm 21 - I am male and I'm Straight

90 percent of the high street is catering only to tapered jean wearers ( i.e Skinny Fit, Carrot Fit, Drop Crotch ) So I'd advise you to try a pair now.

Topman have a fit called 'skinny fit', they are quite skinny ( http://www.topman.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=33056&storeId=12555&productId=1693896&langId=-1&sort_field=Relevance&categoryId=207170&parent_categoryId=207169&pageSize=20&refinements=category~[207172|207170]&noOfRefinements=1 )

but not overly as obvious as their 'stretch skinny' or 'spray on skinny' ( i wouldnt recommend unless your and overly feminine gay man)

Another Massive trend now, which has become alot more popular are the Chino's, which between River Island and Topman Come in Skinny and Straight. And a Multitude of Colours Mate! :)http://www.riverisland.com/Online/men/trousers/chinos

Some other shops that may help:
    Topman (€44 to €60)
    River Island (€50+)
    All-saints (€80 to €100)
    American Apparel
BT2 (Firetrap, Levis,) from about (€60 to €150)
    ASOS.

There's a difference between fashion and style. Stylish clothes look good now, and 5, 10, 20, 50 years later. Fashionable clothes sometimes look idiotic now, and more obviously so in the future.

Skinny jeans may be fashionable, but they are a style disaster.

I'd like to kindly ask you not to insult your fellow posters thank you very much. The Fashion and Appearance forum shares a wealth of knowledge and has garnered a community of people interested in fashion and cosmetics.

Please take the time to read the forum charter. Clothing does not influence sexual preference.

I really dislike the look personally but that is just my personal perference, they are in fashion so if you like them and they look good on you wear them.

They have been in style for YONKS, they haven't just randomly sprouted up.
They go back to the punk movement of The Sex Pistols and crap. So they are fashionable and looking back now, they were in style when The Sex Pistols wore them and I bet when people look back in another 20 years and see The Kings of Leon wearing them they'll think the same.

No. They were worn as anti-fashion by the Sex-Pistols and co. They became a mainstream fashion for a short time in the early 80s, but very soon afterwards went out again (as most ugly fashions do). The cancer of skinny jeans then went into total remission until quite recently.

I note that you use the terms 'style' and 'fashion' interchangeably. I don't. :)

I was in UCD so I didn't have the chance to bump into a lot of guys wearing skinny jeans, but there was this guy at school who was an apparent adept of skinny jeans. To be honest, if you go to places like France or San Francisco, you won't be really taken-aback when bumping into a guy wearing skinny jeans. Same applies if you go to London. It's pretty common to see guys wearing skinny jeans out there.

If you live in Dublin or in Ireland in general, it's a bit shocking to be honest because most dudes wear pyjamas/tracking suits so if a guy appears to wear skinny jeans, he'll look a bit overdressed !

My personal preference : Well, if the jeans in question fit the guy, why not. I used to like skinny jeans on guys but now, I'm kinda over it. Plus, I don't think it's a matter of skinny jeans or whatever, it's the outfit in general which makes the jeans look good or bad. Hence, it really depends on how you wear it. Also, the attitude is a huge factor ! Most guys who wear skinny jeans have this uptight attitude even though they might be nice. When " regular " girls see a boy wearing such jeans, they directly feel a barrier because the guy looks kinda unreachable. I know not all girls feel like this, but some of them beause of the whole pre-conceived ideas on such outfits.

I personally find them incredibly unattractive on guys unless they're the really loose fit ones which I think look good when worn right and on the right frame. Skinny jeans clinging to the leg? No. They make men look super beanpole-y which I just find unattractive.

In my opinion late teens/early twenties is when people would wear a red jean. How many 13 year old boys would you know to have the guts to wear something like that?

Not everyone can wear a skinny and most definitely not a red pair but for those who can, well that's good for them.

Do people distinguish between slim and skinny fit? I tend to wear slim fit since it fits me best but i do get a fair amount of comments from females. Irish girls in particular seem to take offence:confused: I nearly always get ridiculed by at least one girl every night I'm out. It actually surprises me since I do choose slim fit but my clothes are still quiet conservative compared to what younger guys would wear (I'm just 30). I get a lot of my casual and work clothes in Zara or Ted Baker since their clothes fit best hence much of my stuff is dark coloured with a classicial look.

This never happens me in the UK or on the continent and it doesn't seem to bother guys as much. It annoys me since I find it rude and I would probably get lynched if I actually gave an honest opinion on how most girls in Ireland look.

Wear what you like, what you feel looks good on you and what makes you feel comfortable. I wouldn't worry about a bit of banter or slagging from others. If they are being especially negative or critical, it says more about them really. Nothing worse then conforming to mainstream or generic clothes for fear of standing out. You can go out wearing Ben Sherman short sleeved shirts, baggy bootcut jeans and Penneys runners/shoes for the rest of your life and be reassured that no-one will ever comment on what you're wearing but is that what you want?

I'm also just on the other (wrong!!) side of 30 but wear slim jeans mostly but that's because I'm tall and slim and I think it suits my frame better. I do sometimes get comments but they have been complimentary (sure, perhaps others may comment behind my back but that is not something I'm going to worry about). I read one of Paul Galvin's style columns in the Irish Indendent recently and said while he is a champion of skinny jeans, he knew of some guys who loved skinny jeans and would try them on in fitting rooms and like them but not have the guts to buy them for fear of ridicule wearing them in public.

OP - wear what you want to wear but you do need to be comfortable about it. If you're worried about what others think, then you may not be comfortable which defeats the purpose of looking and feeling good.

Really interesting seeing all the different opinions in here.
Personally I like wearing skinny jean.
My OH loves them on me. Get complimented on them all the time.
I am a really skinny guy though.
However even for me I have found some to be too skinny.
One pair in particular were more like tight than jean.
They were bet onto my leg and I had a horrible job getting them off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 147 ✭✭tommmy

Interesting comments here.i actually started a similar thread about skinny jeans.i am all for skinny jeans, then again im very skinny and they suit my build cause i have a skinny leg some say its like a matchstick :D but i wont get into that.

Some say they look to tight,or they should not be worn on me and just for girls.
Well that's a load of nonsense, guys can wear skinny jeans..it does not mean they are part of the hipster crowd.

Might regret saying this but we as a country here are way behind style..men here are still wearing flares for god sake they look RIDICULOUS

But getting away from the point if they work go for them brov

Might i say Topman are a good place to buy skinny jeans

    good luck Mr

The proper mens ones are ok.
Too may people think they can get away with wearing the €9 womens ones from penneys with their asses hanging out gangsta style.
My friend has a couple of pairs from Topman and River Island and they're nice on him

Women are very odd when it comes to men's fashion I find. If you have ASOS liked on Facebook go to the men's outfits they put together and mostly all the women commenting are saying something negative.

    I don't get it personally.

Yes, flares look ridiculous, as do skinny jeans. But when these things are in fashion, people wear them regardless. Usually people only realise when they are out of fashion again that they looked ridiculous.

OP it shouldn't matter what other people think as long as you think you look good and feel comfortable. I would pity someone who went around in clothes which they were unsure about or uncomfortable in just to please their partner, or worse just to please strangers passing on the street.

If you're pleasing yourself, go for it.

i think skinny or slim fit jeans are most attractive on guys. i personally do not like a boot leg jean at all. i do however think that the majority or irish people have not yet come to terms with a "skinny jean" on guys which is absolutely ridiculous. my boyfriend is english and he only ever wears skinny jeans but when my friends first met him they thought it was a bit weird/that he looked gay and it really annoyed me. i am in my mid 20's though and from what i see skinny jeans are becoming more accepted with teenagers
