    Probably something to with it
    1) Being ugly as fúck
    2) Being as aerodynamic as a brick
    3) Being incredibly unsafe
    4) Being ugly as fúck?

You didn't pick a great example of an old BMW did ya?

Something like this would be great to see again:

In 25 years there will be posters asking the same question of modern BMW's. Retro is cool.

    Not with those whitewall tyres...

I kinda agree, doesn't have to be an M3 or anything. The E28 5 series for example was a lovely understated thing and the original M5 was a real gentleman's express. Very subtle, not shouty or showy.

Love the old e30 shape too. Boxy is cool!

It's all the plastic parts in the newer ones that annoy me. Crappy plastic radiators and stats etc. Gf's e46 had sooo much sh!t replaced lately and they were all nasty plastic things that use to be made of metal in the old days.

I don't really like to many BMW models after around 2002.

Because the car manufactures realised there is not as much money in selling cars that last that long, and can be serviced by anyone.

These days you need to make the car as complicated as possible, with as many expensive and fragile parts as possible, that will always fail regularly on cue, and that can only be bought from you the manufacturer, and replaced and set up using equipment that only you the manufacturer owns. It's called planned obsolescence, and it is a multi billion euro scam.

The best answer for this is that BMW realised they didn't have to try making cars anymore. They can sell whatever sh1te they want and people will still buy it.

Harsh but quite a lot of truth in that.
The same goes for all the once "posh" brands.

Also VW is still living off the long gone reputation of the beetle and mark 1 golf.

I call bollocks. The E30 is (in standard, untarted form) a classically elegant car, but the E90 is in a different league on all fronts bar aesthetics.

I've driven the new 1M or M1 which ever they call it now, it's fast and easy to drive bit I wouldn't say it's the nicest looking BMW in years, it's a 1 series saloon with less doors and a smaller boot.
It's fast though and makes a great noise.

The panel gap between the bonnet and bumper of that yellow 8 Series would drive me nuts. Like biting tinfoil. Argh! Gorgeous cars though, with power to match.

The F10 5 Series is staggeringly gorgeous to my eyes.

Many new Beemers are to my eyes at least very visually unappealing and that's a shame as I used to love the marque. Now, meh, whatever I'd consider one but I don't really, really want one like I once did. I don't want retro I just want a decent looking car without having to add bodykits etc to make it aesthetically acceptable.

There is no such thing as a 1 series saloon.

It's a proper coupe and is well regarded as one of the best looking cars of the last few years.

Sure the current M3 is just a 3 series with less doors and a smaller boot.....

... is well regarded as one of the best looking cars of the last few years.

...bit of a stretch don't you think? Sure it looks pretty nice but to say that it's one of the best looking cars of the last few years doesn't say much for car design in general. It's all subjective I know but who regards it as one of the "best looking cars of the last few years" and when was consensus on this achieved?

I'm going to assume the guy that reviews cars 7 days a week knows that :p - he was making the point that it is the same thing as a saloon version of a 1 series...

Nicest BMW on the market since the E34.

Oh, and the e92 M3 in alpine white is easily a much nicer looking car than the M1 - IMO it's the nicest BMW I've seen to date

I hope they get around to making something like this in the near future, BMW electric

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,262 ✭✭✭Vertakill

Maybe I'm too 'generation x' or something along those lines... and I'm probably going to be absolutely slated here...

But I fúcking hate the majority of those old shítbox BMW's and Mercs like the one in the OP.

The only one that doesn't look horribly dated and disgusting is the 8 series there which, to this day, still looks quite modern.

And I know people will say something like "well it's retro, it's not meant to be modern!"... but seriously... I would much, much prefer to drive a modern, clinical, characterless, safe, fast, plasticy but aesthetically pleasing BMW any day over a... slow, old, boxy, well made with hand-stitched leather, ugly BMW that's brimming with character.

The only "old" cars that would interest me, aesthetically, are the Porsches.

So you think that the reason for cars being more complicated is a conspiracy and has nothing to do with cars being safer, faster, cleaner, more comfortable, more creature comforts, technology.......

Do you apply the same logic to mobile phones, ie apple iphone vs a nokia 6310, being that an iphone gives more trouble purely so that people buy more and nothing to do with all the technology packed into a thing that fits into your hand?

wtf ? when the 1 series coupe came out almost everyone here slated it's looks. Now BMW have pumped it up a bit and ( more importantly for boards.ie ) Clarkson gives it a good review and suddenly its the best looking BMW in years ?

I always liked the 1, But the M has different lines so yes i would assume other folks would alter the opinion based on the new appearance. would you not agree?

However if people base it on clarksons recommendations thats another thing.

Personally I think the old BMWs modify real well. Lost a lot of their "wow" with age, but some subtle mods and they look real well:

    My dream car.

Last BMW which was hand made!

I would love to import one of those things from uk!

I loved a comment about m1 and how much love it gets after clarkson showed it :)

Yes, it looks better then standard 1 series, but in the end of the day it's not nicest car BMW made.

You can kill me if you want, but new 5 series looks like ****. In pictures and in real life. Older one just looks way more elegant. Older one is e60 right?

edit: sorry, not e10, but e60

More than just the e39!? The E34 is the one with the most love in the community. The new model (F10) is meant to look similar to the e39/e34 and I personally think it looks better and better each time I see it.

    5 Series models:

    E39 (1995-2003)

If I ever won in the lottery, my garage would have E34, E39, E36 M cars and of course the E31 850ci.

If you won the lotto, youd get an 850CSi to keep all M Cars or an Alpina B12 Coupe for even more rarity factor.
You could buy an 850Ci right now, its not all that pricey!

I'd have to be older. The only BMW I could insure at the moment is the 316i and the 318 tds...

Its got flared arches and different front an rear bumper and I imagine is a bit lower - those aren't different lines. I do see it looks much better but claiming its the most beautiful car ever made is a bit silly particularly when so many slate it in its normal state.
