    Squad to be named tomorrow.

Although the World Cup seeding and draw will be decided a couple of weeks before this, it's still an interesting match in that fringe players several of whom are arguably better than their counterparts currently starting for Ireland, might get their shot to see what they can bring to the table. I sincerely hope Messrs Ward, Foley, Clark, Wilson, Coleman, McCarthy, Hoolahan and Sammon feature.

Conor Sammon is in no way good enough to play for Ireland. The rest are fair enough and I too would like to see them feature.

The lad has potential from what I saw of him against Man City and West Ham. Martinez speaks highly of him, very possible he'll get a proper chance with Wigan this season.

I hope Keane and Doyle sit this one out - we know what they can do. I'm hoping the squad's strikers will be Long, Walters, Cox, Best and Sammon.

He has had a decent year and there is no harm giving him a call up for a friendly, thats what they should be used for.Worse players than him have been called up .

No harm In giving the chap a chance in a friendly game. The likes of keane, dunne,Given shouldn't be included because we all know what they can do.I'd like to see
    Westwood
    Coleman
    St ledger
    Wilson
    Ward
    Mcarthy
    Duff
    Gibson
    Walters
    Long

I think ur right.it's a shame they acted like idiots but I think all of them could be got enough to be in the starting eleven on a permanent basis. Was McCarthy not injured for the carling cup games?

No real complaints apart from the uninspiring Andy Keogh over Hoolahan. I'll be pissed if Kilbane plays more than 60 minutes.

What an absolutely ridiculous time for a round of friendlies to be scheduled. 3 days before the start of the season FFS

I agree the timing is silly, but on the upside the more opportunities Trap has to notice Kilbane shouldn't be playing the better.

Relieved to see McCarthy in there! No complaints with that squad really, kind of what is expected now. Maybe if the likes of Pilkington or Hoolihan impress for Norwich in the first few games of the season they could get a call up for the qualifiers.

it's only the premiership starting that weekend and i don't think FIFA cares too much or thinks that everything revolves around it. They have these dates decided for international through the year so maybe the premier league should change(cant see it some how).

anyone know what pot ireland will be in for the WC draw?
it'll be 3 probably wont it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,650 ✭✭✭Ferris_Bueller

Yeah they'll be in pot 3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,957 ✭✭✭The Volt

Would much rather be in Pot 3 tbh, judging on the teams in it with us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,453 ✭✭✭batistuta9

where did you see the pot that the teams will be in?
i seen that wales might be put into pot 6, their on the same points as the faroe islands & the faroes want UEFA to use decimals so then they would be put into pot 5 wales into 6

is this not the last game before the russia/slovakia double header, if it is i don't think its any time to be messing around with fringe players tbh, croatia will be a good test for them even though there not as good as they were

Nope, it's calculated over all results over the last 4 years. They're so high because they don't play any friendlies, mostly.

yeah tolosenc's right its over the last 4 years, its a complicated enough system.
they've only been playing since 07 and started with 0 points, last place on the fifa ranking table joint 199. impressive for a country with around 650k people.
there doing well in qualifying at the minute level on points with england.

Unlikely to defect, but worthy of discussion. Probably won't be capped in the Trap era because he basically isn't what Trap looks for in central midfielders - he's a passer, not a tackler. :(

Current manager Paul Lambert saw his yellow charges complete historic back-to-back promotions at Portsmouth on a Monday night that will live long in the memory of all City fans.
It means the Canaries will return to English football’s top table next season after an absence of seven seasons – when Worthington’s City side spent a solitary campaign in what many regard as Europe’s best league.
And although Worthington oversaw a Norwich side that finished the 2003-04 campaign as Division One champions, he felt the experience of taking on – and in one memorable case, beating – the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal was something special.
“I’m delighted for the football club and the supporters, and Michael and Delia,” said Worthington. “I’ve still got so many friends at the football club and I’m delighted for everybody – and it’s great for the county of Norfolk as well.
“It’s a fantastic feeling, because you’re pitting your wits and your game against some of the best managers and the best players in the country – and doing that week in, week out.
“Promotion was fantastic highlight for me, but that year in the Premiership was something special. I loved every moment, playing Sir Alex, playing Arsene Wenger – you are playing all the big names, seeing how your players reacted to who they were playing against, some of the world’s best players.
“Paul Lambert has done a wonderful job to get two promotions in successive years, it’s a fantastic achievement and great credit to the players as well.
“Given Joe Royle and Manchester City were the last team to complete successive promotions 11 years ago, it’s something that doesn’t happen all the time, which means all the more for the achievement.”
Worthington, who took charge of Norwich from 2001-06, believes the prospect of the Premier League for most Championship clubs is even more daunting than it was when he was preparing to take it on – although he also feels Blackpool’s efforts this season offer optimism.
“I think the Premier League is ever bigger, ever stronger, more money – it’s certainly more of a force,” added worthington.
“But you look at it, I think Blackpool have shown this year – all right they are getting into a dog fight at the moment – but they had a terrific start with 25 points in the first part of the season.
“So with a lot of hard work and organisation, and I’m sure Paul will be looking to probably bring a few more players in, things can be achieved.”
Having seen Norwich in action several times this season, Worthington is confident the likes of Wes Hoolahan and Grant Holt can be as much of a nuisance to the Canaries’ opposition in the top flight as they have been in the two divisions below over the last two seasons.
“Again I look at Blackpool,” said Worthington. “Ian Holloway has done a fantastic job there, brought some players in. But I’d say half the group is from the Championship and his players have come through that. So I think it will be a matter for the mind and really going in and attacking the situation. But they are capable and good players.”
Worthington added: “That gap (between the Championship and Premier League) has been shown year in year out since the Premier League started, where the teams coming up will always have a real fight on their hands to try and stay in the league. And to stay up there beyond that first year can certainly be seen as a big achievement.”
Hoolahan was omitted yet again from the Republic of Ireland’s latest provisional squad yesterday, despite helping City to Premier League promotion. The once-capped midfielder was missing from the 33 names on coach Giovanni Trapattoni’s list for Ireland’s three summer fixtures.
And Northern Ireland boss Worthington admitted he would have Hoolahan in his squad if he ever got the chance.
“There are many players I would love to play for Northern Ireland,” said Worthington. “We haven’t got huge numbers to pick from and Wes has shown at Blackpool and of course Norwich what a fantastic footballer he is. I would love him to be (a Northern Ireland player) but I don’t think it can happen.”

Yeah I was about to say this. If Ireland weren't playing (and losing) all these friendlies at Aviva our ranking would be higher too. TBH I don't think friendlies should be counted at all for ranking purposes.

Time flies, just over a week until the Croatia game and the qualifiers in a month.
Giovanni Trapattoni has named a final 25-man Republic of Ireland squad for the forthcoming Three international friendly against Croatia on 10 August.
The Republic of Ireland manager said: "I intend to use the game against Croatia at Aviva Stadium next week to have the confirmation of a few options ahead of our September matches against Slovakia and Russia.
"Liam Lawrence and Kevin Kilbane have been excused for club commitments, while John O'Shea, Aiden McGeady, Paul Mc Shane and Kevin Foley have picked up injuries and will also be excused."

Republic of Ireland squad to play Croatia at Aviva Stadium on 10 August:
Given (Man City), Westwood (Sunderland), Forde (Millwall); Kelly (Fulham), Dunne (Aston Villa), St Ledger (Leicester), O'Dea (Celtic), Delaney (Ipswich); Ward (Wolves), Coleman (Everton), Gibson (Manchester United), Whelan (Stoke), Andrews (Blackburn), Fahey (Birmingham), Hunt (Wolves), McCarthy (Wigan), Treacy (Preston), Wilson (Stoke), Duff (Fulham); Keogh (Wolves), Keane (Tottenham), Doyle (Wolves), Walters (Stoke), Long (Reading), Cox (West Brom).

    Given

    Coleman - Dunne - O'Shea - Ward

    Duff - Whelan - McCarthy - Hunt

    Keane - Doyle

    Wouldn't be shabby.

How is Andy Keogh STILL getting in these squads?

Because despite his painful averageness, he works extremely hard which is the first thing Trap looks for in a player. Personally, I'd prefer someone whose crapness isn't written in stone.

why isnt Ciaran Clark in the squad?

he hasnt yet had a competitive match or am i wrong? he played aginst Wales in the Carling cup..... but he could yet switch back to England.

Given the squad, this is surely our strongest team. I'd probably give Wilson a start ahead of Whelan just because it's a friendly.

    McCarthy (Wigan)

    Keane (Tottenham)
    Doyle (Wolves)

He reckons he's ready to go for the first game of the season but I suspect Bruce will be easing him back very, very slowly this year.

You're right though, cracking player if he can get past his injuries.

Like would be expected to be in the Sunderland first 11 if he had an extended period of being fit?

    I really rate him.

He was excellent (bar one red card) alongside Henderson in the centre of Sunderland's midfield from when he made his debut in December 2009 until his ligament injury in May 2010. He was called up to the Ireland squad (never got to join up with them though as that injury struck), signed a new 5 year contract at the club, everything was going right for him.

If he could get back properly fit again I think he'd be a starter every week. Bruce really likes him.

Would be happy enough to see that team start too v Croatia, Btw time to change Givens club from City bench to Villa :)

Meyler has looked good from the few games I've seen him in, seems like he can do the Whelan job but can also add a bit going forward.

I think we have an opportunity to develop quite a talent squad more with an eye on the World Cup. I'm not suggesting wholesale changes but through friendlies & Carling Cup fixtures I'd like us to gradually develop this, starting next week -v- Croatia

    Stokes/(Doyle)

    McCarthy/(Keane)

    -Duff(Brady)
    McGeady-

    Gibson/(Henderson/Clifford)---

    Wilson/(Meyler)

    Ward/(Cunningham)-Clark/(Duffy)----Dunne/(St. Ledger)-Coleman/(JOS)

    Given/(Westwood)

Please don't get too worried about who I have in brackets or otherwise; it was more who I thought of first.
I think if we could get that team's wheels in motion we could have quite a force. A lot of those players clearly need more development but they all have experienced first team football. Henderson has been very unfortunate to do his cruciate a week or 2 ago as Wenger has been hinting at giving him a shot (presumably at League Cup level & a loan to the Championship for this season) but hopefully he can pick up where he left off.

Edit- I know a fair few of these players aren't on the squad but I would like us to get the ball rolling and play Coleman at RB, Ward at LB, perhaps give Westwood a start, get Wilson playing in front of the back 4 and McCarthy supporting the forward play

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,651 ✭✭✭stiffler123

I'd like to see Cox start, he has been really impressive for us so far(2 goals from 4 games). Not a chance of Trap playing Coleman at right back, maybe on the wing.

Heard it was ankle ligament damage, which will probably rule him out for 2-4 weeks.
