At Galway Circuit Criminal Court, a 47-year-old mother has been sentenced to 24 years in prison, with the final 16 years suspended, for the cruelty and neglect of eight of her children.
The woman pleaded guilty to eight sample charges of assaulting, ill-treating and neglecting two sons and six daughters over a seven-year period from 2002 to 2009.
She cannot be named to protect the identity of the children.
Imposing sentence, Judge Raymond Groarke said it was incredible that the abuse could go on for so many years with little or no intervention.

If she is guilty, serve her right. End of story.
Like to know why so many years were suspended, that seems an incredible amount to suspend!

I hope she goes through the menopause before she gets out.

Poor kids. The horrible thing is they probably still have positive feelings for her.

    She'll probably serve 3 years.

Should string her up imo. Lowest of the low when it comes to harming kids.

    The father wasn't mentioned.

What unfolded in court today was described by Judge Raymond Groarke as a “human tragedy” and a “monstrosity.”

The court heard how eight of the woman’s children – six girls and two boys – were beaten with hammers, frying pans, whips, sticks, vice grips and even her bare hands.
The abuse began in May 2002 and took place at various locations around the country until June 2009.

I've said it in threads about this kind of thing before LIFE imprisionment.

As in she gets out the day she dies.

One year per child. Some of whom could have been abused for up to 8 years.

is no one going to mention the elephant in the room ???
dare any one mention the fact that in her " ethnic minority "? this behavior
is not so uncommon ( granted not as bad as her ) in this minority.
this grouping have the worst child mortality rate in europe , worst child literacy , worst health and one of the shortest life spans in western Europe

now irregardless of how this " ethnic group " treat the children in it , what appalls me is the fact that the Irish state allows ANYONE treat children like this - but this grouping tend to crop up a lot in child welfare matters but don't get touched to the extent other citizens do

they are like the ghost children of the state , married off at 12 if female , no school for the most part , no chance if your parents are like this c*nt

and before the charge of the PC brigade , one point
i do a lot of driving and have seen lots of crazy things on the road
i have seen many many times young children in small groups ( aged from about 5 -10 years ) running across the m50 m11 n11 , at rush hour , causing mayhem and running a good risk of death
now every time it happens a " ethnic minority " halting site is the destination
what parent lets the kids run across motorways ? regularly ?
they do - and in my book that's child abuse plain and simple

Strange wording... I'd take bare hands over a hammer any day

She'll be out by 2016 if she behaves herself. What age will the kids be then? Probably still growing up, hope shes barred from ever seeing them again.

another fine example of the banjaxed law system in Ireland.

she should have got the full sixteen years and throw away the key until she completes all 16 of them.

I wonder how many "case conferences" the HSE had "for their file"...

So she got eight and with remission she'll have six it's likely she'll be out in under four

Headline grabbing sentance but it's not reality at all

Is she a widow? Where was the father in all this?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 34,418 ✭✭✭✭hondasam

    I hope you are right.

He faces a lot more serious charges.

He is a nasty piece of work and she is not much better.

well I say it is incredible that the Irish justice system could go on like it is for so many years with little or no intervention for change in serious matters like this. she will be out in four years.

Good, I don't know much about the case but the father is just as responsible whether he lives with them or not.

I know, the puzzled look on my comment was because he gives her 24 years and then 8 years and then back-dates it so she will be out next week by the looks of it, pun intended. what a farce.

I'm not usually one for the torches and pitchfork business but I really hope this cvnt gets scorched and diced to ribbons in prison.

(and as for the 'ethnic minority elephant in the room' read up on what she did. She was an evil maniacal bitch that would leave Mengele in the ha'penny place. Whatever problems Travelers have to try and imply this fuck is in any way representative of them is completely divorced from reality.)

Was absolutely shocked when I heard 8 years on the news a minute ago. She does all those horrific things, condemns her children to a lifetime of mental health problems and only gets 8 years? Awful. :(

    In disbelief.

Just caught the RTE news piece on it there, and my stomach turned at some of the descriptions of the cruelty. I actually feel sick.

What's it finally going to take for our sentencing system to change? I don't understand how law or our justice system works but I can't comprehend how something like that can justifiably get 8 years? She should be put in prison for the rest of her life. Failing that, put in a pysciatric unit for the rest of her life - at least then there's still zero chance of her coming into contact with innocent people again.

What's it finally going to take before the system changes?
And what can be done to speed it along?

where did i imply that ? i was pointing out that in general that section of the continuity have more child welfare issues than " settled " people
and how it was a poor reflection on us as citizens as much on them

she is not reflective of travelers but traveler children have it rougher than normal settled children , read my post again please i think your picking me up wrong

    Ahem:

I think you'll find that this thread is racist. Travellers are their own ethnic group and as such it is unfair to expect them to align themselves with the cultural norms of settled society.

    Or something.

I love the way the strawman of "The PC brigade will even defend horrific abuse if it's practised by a minority" gets trotted out. No. It wouldn't.
