Ok so my basis for this post is that my bf has told me several times that Trappatoni (sp?) had the Irish squad give up Mushrooms as part of their training/nutritional regimen....

Has anyone else heard this and why are they not good?

I always thought they were good source of vitamins and fibre and eat em several times a week.....

Just curious really.... am obviously not a soccer player/athlete....

That's bizarre, never heard of that before, if anyone could shed any light I'd be very interested to hear why.

He made some comment to a Italian newspaper about giving the Irish team a free for all diet but was stunned when he saw them eating mushrooms on match day so banned them. No reason why, but the context of the article could've been translated wrong.

AFAIK he was under the impression mushrooms stayed in the system for too long (news to me!) and I remember reading at the time that the outburst came about when he saw the team eating fried mushrooms, so maybe that was the issue.

Nothing at all wrong with mushrooms sauteed in butter (I had them for dinner with a steak, om nom nom), but I'm guessing they were probably fried in ****ty oils. Still seems a bit weird to single out mushrooms though.

There's SFA calories (27kcal/100g) and fat in them, and a fair few vitamins. Maybe that they were fried in oil? But that wouldn't add all that much to it in the grand scheme of things. Odd.

hih calorie food wouldn't be an issue for full time football players. in fact would be a benefit
