Which Health Insurer?

    Hi Folks,

My apologies if this has been asked a million times before, this is my first time to visit this forum.

So the good lady and myself are both getting older (we're heading for our mid 30s) and with our first house bought a few months ago we know now is the time to get some health insurance. The problem is I don't know much about it.

When I was a kid growing up in the 80s and 90s pretty much the only option was VHI but these days we have Aviva. Is there anyone else? I know Quinn was an option but I presume they are now our of business?

So how do you go about choosing which insurer and which plan is right for you? I've had a look at VHI and to be honest, it's not exactly clear!

Id highly recommend this website www.hia.ie

"he Health Insurance Authority website compares prices and benefits of Irish health insurance plans and provides information on your consumer rights."

In regards to health insurance you need to decide where you want cover for - public hospitals, private hospitals ie St Vincent's Private or cover in the high tech hospitals ie mater private or blackrock clinic.
I have been looking at the hia.ie site and quinn seem to cover all hospitals including the high tech when you are willing to pay an excess the cover cost is not €2k+. It seems that vhi and aviva will pay a percentage of cost of some operation ie 80% cost of some operations or 45% of room cost in the mater which will leave you with a large bill when you home. Quinn will show an excess of €50/€125 for some hospital stays along with a shortfall of a certain amount per night depending on the type of room you are in.
The plans that I looked at were the following – put both into hia.ie website for full info.
Quinn Company care excess with no eap ( no employee assistance) €819 and for a lower excess the Company Care Plus at €880 per year.
Both above plans cover public hospitals in full, and give access to private and high tech hospitals with an excess to be paid. They also have a €1 excess for doctor, consultant visits ect. If you are planning to have family you have to wait for 12 month before you can claim for private maternity care & no policy will cover the full amount for this. You can claim further money back with the med one form in this case. If you go public for maternity it is free. I hope this is of help to you.

Any chance of getting Health Insurance for Over 60's without waiting the 10 years for pre-existing problems?
