Whenever I'm going for a big lift like a max bench for example I need to get myself really worked up and pissed off.

I'm just curious as to if other peopled this and if so, what makes you angry enough to lift big?

Ya i know what you mean something to get you really focused on the lift, personally i think a really heavy riff or "bad ass" metal song does the trick...,lately before a heavy deadlift or pushpress i use disturbed's song invencible, put it on and right before the singing starts im good to go....

Anger and Motivation are two very different things for me.

Back in the day watching the rocky training montage on vhs did the trick!:D

A good agressive dance or heavy rock tunes, some of the linkin park stuff is great for liftin. Best thing for me is to go to the gym in bad mood and feckin go for it! And what's great about this is i actually go home in good mood after lettin myself loose in the gym which results in no arguments with the missus...it's a win win situation really. Now i'm not a grumpy fcuker it's just my boss is a real cnut and winds me up wild style!

This is more what I was getting at. I appreciate the music thing but everyone listens to music.

I was thinking more along the lines of someone or something who winds you up! Glad I'm not the only one

There appears to be two of you who use this method of getting psched!:D

At the end of the day whatever works is what you go with!

I have a video I watch on my Ipad.

It features me crushing my enemies, then some footage of them being driven before me and extended audio of the lamentation of their women.

I keep picturing myself with fat arms and tummy bulges in my wedding dress (6 weeks to go) and I get so horrified I scare myself into lifting more or running faster :(

To be honest I think of the action scenes in 300, its the most motivating movie for me

The big phat dopamine release my brain gives me after picking up something heavy or doing some sort of intervals.

I can't help but notice but it seems to me that already there is a trend emerging whereby the girls tend to have fear as motivation whereby the guys tend to have inspiration as motivation (300 movie, music, slain enemies ;) etc).

Women can be their own worst enemies at the best of times (magazines and tv shows such as next top model).

I have to admit, on occassion I get pretty wound up when i'm doing something like power cleans or deadlifts as part of a metcon or in supersets and you get the sneers from the pretty boys in groups on the tricep pulldown machines etc.

You know the boys in the tank tops looking at themselves in the mirror, the ones that you would never see wearing shorts because their legs are so skinny and the ones that you would never see even attempting a squat or deadlift or even a feckin lunge! It's all upper body all the way with those lads. Each to their own n all that jazz but I just love bangin out rep after rep with the heart rate up while they stand there admiring themselves

Damn, this is turning into a full scale rant here! I think I need to chill out a bit! :D

After being out injured for most of the year, I have gone back keeping a weights diary with me in the gym. It might just be a simple mental bridge, but always wanting to improve on the most recent lifts from the previous session, flicking back a couple pages and knowing the number that you have to beat for improvement. More weight, more reps or whatever, just aiming for improvement.

Totally go with the music/determination/anger... or whatever inspiration you need. I just think that having the diary, not only helps you to control your workouts but to give you a push before you take hold of the bar, give you confidence and a target. I know that this isn't an answer you were expecting, but anything that helps use it

I love how in this forum its totally ok to spend hours each week in the gym lifting away towards whatever goals you may have (even aesthetics), but at the same time you absolutely may not under any circumstances check yourselves out in the mirror.

I have a fairly large folder of pictures, quotes and video links.

Here's some vids I have saved that some people might like:

well let me be clear about this for you then it's not the checking oneself in the mirror that annoys me it's more sniggering at other people that's pretty annoying.

I have the complete opposite problem.
Exercise makes me inexplicably angry no matter if it's cardio/weight/toning whatever.
I just end up worn out and unsatisfied after my work out. It actually puts me off working out because I come out more frustrated and angry than with all those good endorphins people yap on about...:(

    ...any suggestions?

Also...before anybody asks :P I don't have any pent up issues other than I don't look as light as I would like...which should be solved by exercise :P
