    Ok fellas,

I'm being told the new season's site will be up and running this week, so as per last year I will set up a code for the paid game, and can also set up the Boards league if no one else does.

We had about 26 in the paid game last year, and the winning score was 2,102 so if you think you can better that GET INVOLVED :)

I'll decide on the best way to pay prize money once we have the numbers, ideally would like to have a monthly prize / top weekly score for season but unless the numbers are good it's difficult.

The season itself is shaping up nicely, my plan to get Taraabt in straight away is under review as he will struggle to earn points from France if the rumoured transfer goes ahead.

I'd be looking for Van Persie and Bent to start the season in the same rich form they ended last years, and dependant on price Charlie Adam should again be super value.

Would also like to hear people's opinions on the best formations and the old GK quandary of 1 top class and 1 crap or 2 of middle standard.

Anyhow, will update details as I get them, best of luck to all.

PS - http://totalfpl.com/ is one of the sites for player price rises and falls, countless people will ask during the thread so here it is.

PPS - Press print screen (PrtSc) on your keyboard when on the FPL site, Open Paint, go to "edit" and "paste", Crop the image and save it, upload it to an image hosting site like Imageshack, Tinypic etc and insert the picture in your post

    ***Boards League Code: 1047-808 ***

***Anyone interested in joining the Boards Paid Fantasy Football League should PM mirwillbeback for the details.***

    Excellent!

Did you email them to find out when it starts or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,710 ✭✭✭✭Paully D

I usually play 3-4-3 but it varies a lot depending on the fixtures. I also get a top keeper in and have a very cheap on in reserve.

I got 2,100 points overall last year so I think I'll give this a go this season. I'm not 100% sure yet though :)

Emailed them last week and they said they were aiming to be live today, but usually there are small issues that delay the site by 24 - 72 hours. Here's
    hoping ;)

Top keeper is defo the way to go for me this year..
See what price Al habsi is for the second goal keeper..

Think Bent may suffer this year especially if Downing follows young out the door, also Big Eck aint exactly the attacking type of manager!

Rooney will be my main striker....

Will join both leagues as i am a sucker for losing money!!

I say this every year but...

I will not use my first wild card stupidly early this year.

The big question for me right now is.... what team name do I use? :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,635 ✭✭✭token56

Looking at the fixtures for the first 6 weeks can't see any team with a particularly easy set of fixtures. Fulham would probably look one of the best but still not great.

What are peoples tactics in general giving that its hard to know what a teams form is going to be like early in the season. Focus on established consistent scoring players and adapt as the high scoring players come into view?

Do people just play the fixtures in the first few rounds and then a wildcard after a couple of weeks?

A few different approaches you could take I guess

Unless you are lucky or a genius, you are not going to select a super team from the start. Some teams will start slow (Everton last year), some teams will defy the odds (Blackpool), some will make a complete meal of a very easy start (Wigan) and the players themselves can be a complete hit or miss.

I have wildcarded before week 4 in the last 2 years and I found it worked wonders tbh. I was able to assess teams for 2 weeks, drop the deadweight and bring in form players who helped raise my team value for later in the season. The fact that we have a second wildcard makes the decision much easier. In retrospect, there was not one gameweek last year where I found myself saying "I really wished I had kept my wildcard".

As for starting strategy, you cannot go worng with a regular 4-4-2 at the start with 2 big name players in defense, midfield and forwards. My gut is saying that clean sheets are going to be scarce again this year so I will probably start with 3-5-2 or 3-4-3. Looking at fixtures, I *think* that 3-4-3 might be the best bet for the first few fixtures.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,975 ✭✭✭iMuse

Looking forward to this starting up again :) I normally go with 2 cheap GK's who rotate well for home and away fixtures, Foster scored almost as many points a cech and was a good bit cheaper. I can see me playing 3-4-3 this season with 1 expensive defender and most of the money going into MF and FW. I held on to my Wildcard for too long last year which cost me in the end so ill prob play it within the first 5 weeks depending on my start :)

Also http://totalfpl.com/ is one of the sites for player price rises and falls, countless people will ask during the thread so here it is.

    Yeah, good thinking.

mirwelbeback, no harm in editing your OP to put this in, and maybe also one or two image hosting sites. Might cut down on the amount of people asking about them.

I have a fantastic team name in mind. Just hope it's not taken.

Can't wait for this. Big improvement needed this year. I went from 30,000 overall 2 years ago to around 500,000th last year. Not good enough

For the last 3 seasons I've played my wildcard during the first international break (will be between GW 3 and 4 this season). I've finished in the top 5k each of those seasons. I think it's the best strategy for getting in the value players early before price rises really hurt your team. Also, no point in hanging onto duds for a few weeks while they plummet in price.

finished just inside the top 60,000 last year although finshed on bit of whimper as was in 32,000 with 3 weeks to go still had WC to play and fecked it up.

Still only first season and was happy enough finished 7/36 in money league and just outside the cash...

This year I want top two finish in my league and within the top 8,000 overall...High expectations:P

    This season, I swear

No more drunken friday night/sat morning changes
No more filling up on lower table team double gameweeks (Birmingham last season bit me hard:eek:)
No more using the free transfers as soon as I get them
No more spending 4 points to hopefully get 6

One thing I'm gonna miss is that for the last 2 months, everytime I've checked to see if the new site is up, there's a glorious " Aston Villa 1 Liverpool 0 " at the top of the fixtures.

Email received from the Support today,.....................

    Hi Paul

Now that the season has ended, your team, leagues and any forum messages will shortly be reset, as will all of the player values and positions where appropriate.

The new game will start around mid-July, although there is no fixed date as yet. You will need to select another team. However, your login details will remain the same. For league administrators there will also be an option to restart your leagues.

Look forward to seeing you again next season!

    Regards
    FPL

What is the story for paying for the paid game? Who do we've to talk to?

I would definitely be up for playing, finished just over 2200 points last year, mostly thanks to my obsession with Berbatov, first year it finally payed off having him almost permanently as captain :P

Update from fantasy football scout: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2011/07/13/a-fantasy-premier-league-update/
The Premier League have confirmed to us this afternoon that their Fantasy game is in the final stages of testing for the new season but will not be going live today.

The game and site have been enhanced and, while things are almost complete, there are still some minor browser issues that need to be ironed out before the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) site can launch.

We can take this opportunity to dispel a number of rumours that have cropped up in recent days and confirm that all is well with the FPL and that the game will be free to play. There are also a number of significant improvements that we feel will be greeted with a very positive response from players and, in particular, our community; having voiced strong opinions on certain features of the game, you have helped influence some of the changes introduced.

We will endeavour to bring you details of those changes and any update on the release date. One of the benefits of our new relationship with the FPL is that visitors to Fantasy Football Scout will get information and enjoy a two-way relationship with the game organisers. This means that once the game is released and the new features announced, you can rely on us to feedback your reactions to the changes.

    Hang in there folks.

    Also: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2011/07/13/the-scout-agree-premier-league-deal/
We’re delighted and proud to announce that Fantasy Football Scout has agreed a deal with the Premier League to provide a weekly column for their official Fantasy game.

“The Scout” will make an appearance twice a week throughout the season to provide Gameweek preview and review articles and will also be supplying injuries and suspension information via our newly designed systems.

The review article will include full details on Bonus Point awards for a given Gameweek and seek to remove any ambiguity surrounding assists awards.

The agreement is the culmination of months of discussions and hard work behind the scenes and I’d like to thank Chris (Elfozzie) for his efforts in securing this deal and all the contributors who have established this site as a source of editorial and information worthy to support the biggest Fantasy game around.

We’d also like to thank the community that has supported us and helped to make the site what it is. We really have made great strides in recent years and that is down to the knowledge, enthusiasm and support you have shown for what we’re trying to achieve with Fantasy Football Scout.

FFS is a good site for information and not one that every player in your private league would know of so this new deal will bring more people to the site eroding its advantage somewhat

Yeah it is a bit of an advantage for people who put less time into the game and will now be pointed towards a very useful site. Still I'd imagine that all the top players are aware of these sites anyway and if you put in the time to plan your team it should not make too much difference.

I'm interested to see what changes are made. Judging by some of the comments on that site it looks like the vice-captaincy rule will be changed, and a system will be in place to explain bonus points for every match. I'd also expect the FPL site to be revamped as it has had the same look for years now. Quicker updates to GW totals would also be welcome.

Does anyone play the Championship Fantasy Football from texaco?

I entered this as well, and the current team (liable to wholesale change) is:

    D. Forde, Harte, Spence, Kisnorbo, Faye, Snodgrass (c), Lallana, M. Noble, Danns, McCormack, J. Rodriguez

    sick of waiting now.

two other good sites i might recommend that haven't been mentioned are

www.fiso.co.uk - massive forum on fantasy sports. the sub forum on fantasy premier league is very active, great discussion and advice there, this is where all the hardcore fantasy premier league heads hang out. seriously, these guys are making crazy spreadsheets and all kinds of deep analysis.

http://totalfpl.com/ - great little site new on the scene last year. dashboard site with loads of cool gadgets on one page, fixture ticker, scoring odds, team news, price changes, and you can link to your team and access it through the site to see price changes and gameweek points, very handy if FPL is blocked in work!

FFS scout as mentioned is a great blog, lots of good content. i'd also recommend this blog: http://www.nevercaptainnickybutt.com/ especially for their gameweek previews.

    [shameless plug]

and of course the best blog on the internet, me and my mates:

http://backofthenetboy.blogspot.com/ updated every gameweek and will have a good few articles in the next few months.

    [/shameless plug]

I think FFS have shot themselves in the foot with this move. Now I am certain that they will reap the rewards financially, but they will lose the most important advantage they had...secrecy.

Now every tom, dick and harry will know the site, and what's worse, will start posting useless advice.

I noticed a huge drop in the quality of the advice last season, and I did way better when I stopped reading the user comments. I don't post any rate my team posts anymore because, invariably, you get way more ill-informed advice than not. Ande then, if you take that advice and it doesn't work out, you'll be kicking yourself for not taking your own advice.

By all means, keep reading the articles and checking out the scout picks, but do it knowing that everyone else will be doing the same.

And when something becomes the norm, it becomes redundant. It is no longer an advantage.

I signed up to the members area. It's 15 quid (so not cheap) but it should be good for coming up with your own picks.

yes i know that but i enjoy the whole changing your team a 100 times before the season starts - it gives me something to do at work. Surely i cant be the only one that considers themselves a FF tinkerman on steroids before the season actually starts

Agree totally with that. FFS lost me when they introduced subscriptions but the main thing I noticed it just seemed full of more quantity less quality and some of the advice on the site was just plain bad.

The one thing which I use to love were the scout picks but they were so bad last season I'd be left thinking why would they choose that player!?

Ended up rarely visiting the website. Nowhere near as good as it used to be.

Yeah some of the scout picks were very very poor last year to be honest. That aside, the paid membership, if you take it as a separate entity from the main site, is worth it imho. It's handy when picking the initial team and when you are looking at bringing in form players.
