How much calcium is too much?

As the thread title suggests, what should the average intake of milk be a day? I'm a fully grown female. :D I was brought up on milk, and could easily put away a litre of the stuff (skimmed, never full or low fat). I drink a lot of lattes, cappuchino and am going to cut back on them, but out of interest, how much would be enough for health, but not enough to be blamed for weight gain.

    Cheers!

Dunno about the calcium requirements exactly, but a litre (a day?) of skimmed milk would easily be 550 cals roughly, a quarter of a woman's RDA, definitely something to keep in mind if you're thinking about weight gain.

Oh sweet Jesus, you're kidding me??? God, didn't think it would be that much. Thanks - that's knocked my latte habit right on the head!!!

Ireland has one of the highest milk intakes in the world, but not exactly the strongest bones. Don't rely on milk for you calcium. Get lots of green vegetables as well as nuts and tinned fish.

The RDA for a mature woman varies from 800g to 1200g, depending on who you ask, and if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, in puberty or menopause.

Interestingly, calcium is more easily absorbed when there is fat present, so skimmed milk may not be as good for your bones as half fat or even full fat. Keep an eye on your magnesium, Vitamin K and Vitamin D intake as well.

It is 410 calories for a litre of skimmed milk.

Calcium absorbtion is regulated by vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin.

There is a good presentation on grasshootsheath.com here:

The lactose in the milk will cause you problems much sooner than the calcium. Everyone is lactose intolarant to some degree.

Full fat Milk is very anabolic stuff, thats why growing kids go mad for it.
