On the subject of the actual show, if i even had a tv set up i doubt i'd watch that. I'm fairly sure it'll be rubbish

Indeed it was, it wasn't bad at all.

Programs like these are done with the full co-operation of the subjects which means that they (in this case the Gardai) have full editorial control over what is broadcast, otherwise the people making the program wouldn't get the access they do.

It's the same with that program about the immigration people in Australia, you can even see their influence in the program description which describes them as 'the people who defend Australia's borders' when all they are is a bunch of customs and immigration officials.

No actors and no scriptwriter to pay means it's cheap TV but you have to take it as pure propaganda - definitely not a 'warts and all' production.

The PR department seem to have pointed this programme in the direction of speeding.

Seems a little more professional this time.

most of the drivers done for penalty points wont even get them ,they are not irish nationals.

What about yer women in the Landrover? "You might be getting points in the post". Come on FFS. You either are or your not, tell the poor driver.

i thought the cop told the guy in the merc doing 150kph he failed the breath test?whats the story.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

    He failed the roadside test.

A more accurate test is taken back at the station, which he passed.

Yeah I was a bit bemused at that too. I was given penatly points for doing 60 in a 50 zone without any kids in the car and the guard told me right there and then.

Is there a possibilty that this woman won't actually be getting points?

Exactly, maybe he had an old penny under his tongue. :D

I was wondering why he was all fuzzed(excuse the pun) in the video considering he failed the breath test. Surely, being videod in a public place, they should show his face as he WAS guilty of an offence / 2 offences.

Unless I suppose if he checked her license details back at the station to find she is not supposed to be driving. (Driving with an old duplicate license following ban) - Instant Court.

Road side breath test can't be used in court, if you fail the road side test you are arrested and brought to the station where you are put on the intoxilyzer machine and if you fail that then your charged. In this case the driver was over the 35mg on the M50 but when he blew into the bigger machine at the station he was under.

I'm surprised at those who don't stop immediately, the odds of getting away are minimal, specially when they lose their bottle after 200 yards. Decent program for an RTE thing.

    I said to the Baroness

I was equally surprised at how lenient the Gardai were, the stereo story wasn't even remotely plausible. I would have thought an extra charge for not stopping would have been given, I suppose he stopped soon enough though, sofakingweetoddad to not stop as soon as the blue lights come on too. 'twas the same last week, a lad in a Brava didn't stop for a while, claimed he panicked, he was over the limit too. That was a checkpoint, defo should have charged him for not stopping at that me thinks.

Very good programme. Obviously a PR excercise for the Guards but pretty entertaining nevertheless!

I'm enjoying it. Not focusing on speed so much all the time which is good. Good to see and insight into the traffic corps work.

I just watched it on the player, I think it's good to see how things work with the Guards in Ireland. Looks like a good production, I always pass a Garda car on the N7 (undercover) with a camera crew standing out with yellow jackets.
Having worked with the Guards on a number of motoring articles I know some of the stuff they put up with, the amount of time wasted tracking down and arresting people that's wasted only for a Judge to give a €200 fine is just stupid.
A good program though, if only it wasn't on the same time as Top Gear :)

Just watched it on the player. At a certain point during the speeding Merc. sequence (I ain't saying when :)), a reg is clearly visible on the screen (from the in-car feed). I popped it into Cartell, turns out it was a "Ford Mondeo Ghia 2.5 170PS 4DR" - is the program meant to be revealing the reg. nos. of unmarked cars?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

Both episodes are certainly a step up from the last series. Good to see prison sentences being handed out a bit more.

The Gardaí have a fair whack of legal mumbo-jumbo to natter on about before taking action against anyone, you dont see as much of that on the UK shows.

It's fairly obvious when it appears and if you're up to no good you're going to be spotted by the gardai long before you're close enough to read their reg.

And you can just drive around any day of the week and note the reg of any amount of unmarked cars, or even just hang around outside the garda station, it's no big deal.

Fair point. I thought it might have been an oversight. The undercover car reg. plates are usually pixellated in Road Wars.

They blur everyone featured, guilty or innocent.

What's with blurring the people who were later convicted? Their names have likely already been in the newspaper FFS! Saw last week's episode and have sky plussed last night's. Definitely better than the last series.

Is it my imagination or are the voices (not Gardaí) dubbed?

    They all sound the same

"Disqualified for two years and four penalty points". What's the use in putting four penalty points on a licence that's suspended until they are lifted? Or will the points only apply after two years?

Probably due to the bluring, they dubb the offenders voices.

Jesus, I just watched this episode now.

I've had my disagreements with the way some laws are implemented, but watching this from 17m20s is pretty f*cking scary.

There's a lot of Gardai who literally risk their lives in the course of their duties. I know I wouldn't have had the bottle for that pursuit, and I certainly don't think very many of us truely understand the concept of "I'm off to work dear, next time you see me I may be in a hospital bed or worse".

    I know I couldn't do it.

I reckon that's mild enough compared to what the average Garda gets up to from time to time. Tough job indeed. For and against it though, I doubt any Garda wants to be directing traffic and doing the more mundane tasks all the time either.

I didn't see it, and I can't access RTE Player.

Just curious: is the programme consistently referring to speed and distance in KM now?

IIRC the previous series mixed up miles and kilometres, which is messy and unnecessary.

Yep, I wouldn't like to volunteer for the Gardai, feel it's my vocation and that I'll make a difference, and then find myself behind a desk processing skagheads for years on end. That would be soul-sapping.
That being said, the likelihood that I'll come across scumbags with stanley blades or syringes, violent drunks or have to run a load of red lights at night in the course of my work day is pretty minimal. There's such a thing as too much "excitement". :p
