To be able fix an aircraft, you need to have a licence from the aviation authority of what ever country you do your time & apprenticeship in. In this case it will be the irish aviation authority (IAA).

There are 2 main types of aircraft engineer licence that you can get. (There are others but dont worry about them now, ie, A, C.

To be an "Avionics Engineer", you need to have wants known as a B2 Licence.

To be an "Airframes & Powerplant Engineer", you need to have wants known as a B1 Licence.

Cityjet are offering a 4 year B2 apprenticeship (also known as an avionics apprenticeship).
During the 4 years, you will spend time in the hanger doing all sorts of odds and ends and you will learn how to fix all the aircrafts electronics, cockpick, instruments etc etc. You wont really deal with the engines or sheet metal work as it is not a B1 apprenticeship.

After your 4 years is up, you should hopefully be kept on with cityjet as a "Mechanic".

To get your B2 licence issued by the IAA, you need to have 5 years experience (You will get 4 from your apprenticeship, so you need to work another year as a mechanic), during your apprenticeship you will also have to sit and pass about 12 or 13 exams (I forget how many), some are easy, some are hard.
After 5 years, and the IAA post you your B2 licence you can call yourself an "Aircraft Engineer".

Final note, Once you do get your B2 licence, you will need to do a course on the type of aircraft in which you will work on, lets say for example you where working for Ryanair, they operate the Boeing 737, so you would need to do a couple week course to say you have the knowledge to fix this plane, you then get whats called a TYPE RATING issued in your B2 licence and then you start making LOADZ of money :D

Just dont forget the 93 Euro initial application fee as this is paramount to application and issue :D:D:D

If you wonder and have an interest in electronics, then you will be best suited to the avionics world.

If however, your happier getting down and dirty, then airframes and powerplant will be best suited for you!!!

Dont worry about the cityjet ad, it says avionics apprenticeship but in reality, you can do the B1 exams aswell and get your B1 issued alongside your B2 so you will be dual rated.

Really, they should have advertised it as an aircraft engineer apprenticeship. I have freinds that got on it, some where let go when there apprenticeship ended, some where kept on as mechanics and went on to get the B1 or B2 issued and are now certifying engineers.

anybody know a good place on the web where I could practice these sort of tests? cheers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59 ✭✭lifehacker

Ye the aptitude test is at the end of july, wouldn't say it will be crazy hard. They wouldn't put difficult maths on this test as most applicants will have no engineer or aviation experience. In regard to preparing for the big day check out the Ryanair and Aer Lingus apprenticeship threads

The maths was tricky in parts .. the rest of the test was easy enough :)

Did anyone get answering all the questions?

Good turn out. Top 20 will get called back for an interview so everybody should have a good chance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 613 ✭✭✭Darius.Tr

Top 20 from all the groups? or top 20 from each group? Because there were about a hundred people at 2 o'clock.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22 thejohn0512

i think its just the top 20 overall, and over 300 people applied.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,252 ✭✭✭Sterling Archer

Found it good, i love doing those types of test, great at getting the brain working and good crack.
    She said top 20 overall...
The maths was the hardest, it always is i find, and yep answered every question..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 72 ✭✭Hi 5

if one was lucky enough to be in the top 20, whats the competition like after that ~ how many positions?? meant to ask; forgot, drained after tests!!!
all the time based in Dublin??? could be a key factor....

ps found tests fair, quite easy in sections, but time played its part with 2.5hrs and a drive from outside th 'Pale'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,252 ✭✭✭Sterling Archer

I think 6-8 places, interviews next mid august. First 7-8 months in shannon then dub, between the hanger and college...

I would have had to be on the road since 10th to be there safely but left at 9 to put in a bit of spotting before the tests
