Can you lose fat and build muscle at the same time?

As in, if I do cardio 3 days a week and weights another 3 days, will I lose fat and gain a bit of muscle (with a clean diet?)

If I do my cardio in the mornings on an empty stomach, doesn't that burn fat reserves?

And does muscle burn fat also?

It's confusing to me, and I know about the carbs in, energy out etc so don't give out to me!!

Yes in ceratin conditions its quite common.

    Lift lots of heavy weights.
    Dont do much cardio.
    Eat lots of protein
    Easy on the carbs
It helps if you are new to weights
Even better if you have lifted lots of weights before and are returning to lifting again.

Nope. Excess of calories means an increase of fat and muscle. Expend more calories than you take in and the opposite will happen. That's not to say you can't gain some days and lose other days to a point where you gain more muscle than you lose, which I suppose would be building muscle and losing weight but not really at the same time. So by scientific definitions it is impossible but in practice you can achieve it to some extent.

In real life. I've seen athletes tested before and after pre season training programs. Typically tests are done every 4 weeks. Different athletes will have different goals but it is not uncommon for 80% of any well trained squad to have gained muscle and lost fat.

One of the best example I cal recall the Irish rugby team before the 2007 world cup. They did an 8 week strenth and conditioning program. They were all visably leaner, stronger and fitter afterwards. They also all seem to forget how to catch a rugby ball at the same time. I wonder, do you have a scientic definition for that one?

Surely if your lifting heavy weights one day and running (burning calories) the next while eating healthy (lots of protein) you gain muscle and lose fat???

It will happen initiall due to body recomposition if you've never lifted before.

However, it is quite inefficient compared to properly executed bulk and cut cycles if you really want to put on a good amount of muscle mass/lose fat over the long term.

Calorie deficit, lift heavy and eat enough protein, i don't see why not.

I said it was possible to do it in real life but not at exactly the same time? Read my post again cause obviously you didn't understand it for whatever reason. Why are you being smart at the end of your post

It's possible to gain muscle and lower your bodyfat %, but not actually lose fat if you know what I mean. If a man who weighs 100Kg is 20% bodyfat, he is carrying around 20Kg of fat. If he puts on 10Kg of muscle and no fat, he now weighs 110Kg but his bodyfat % is now 18%. He's still carrying around 20Kg of fat though. Not real life numbers, but there you are.

OP, if i were you I'd pick one and concentrate on it. Losing weight is straight forward enough, eat a calorie deficit.

What I would do though is clean up my diet, eat a calorie surplus of about 500kcals and lift heavy 3-4 times a week. If you do it right you'll add muscle and gain a minimal amount of fat.
