I've selected a few shows that are buzzy and praisey, focused more on more recent shows but a few others that come under the above, so which one do you think is way overrated? [poll allows multi voting], did i miss anything?

Mad Men is very over-rated. I can see the appeal, but isn't nearly as good as the critics make it out to be.

Pretty much impossible to overrate The Wire, The Shield, The Sopranos or Breaking Bad tbh. I enjoy Mad Men but don't see why it's held in such esteem.

    +2 for Mad Men

It's a decent show, certainly not poor and is popular but definitely overrated

If anyone says breaking bad is overrated there will be consequences, consequences i tells ye, consequences, ye have been warned.

I finally finished Mad Men season 1 the other day. Don't even feel the desire to continue, definitely overrated.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,997 ✭✭✭latenia

The Sopranos is nowhere near as sophisticated as people like to believe. For the most part it was the clichéd mafia stuff like rats getting clipped, rounds of drinks greeted with "salut," talk of clans, underbosses and 'getting made' that kept people watching rather than the supposedly complex adult drama the producers claimed it was.

I didn't like Mad Men much either. It's just a blatant attempt to make an award winning show to give their network some prestige like the Oscar baiting films that come out every December.

    Mad Men.. by far!

I honestly can't see how 'Breaking Bad' could be considered over-rated in the slightest IMO.

People rate the Walking Dead highly?

Boardwalk Empire for me. All style and very little original substance. Felt like I've seen it all before just in different settings. Doubt I'll watch the second season.

From what I have seen there I will say True Blood and The Walking Dead.

    Boardwalk Empire
    Mad Men
    The Killing

in that order for me, the only one i haven't watched is Deadwood but i will give it a chance at some stage

The Walking Dead could be up there if the second season doesn't hold up

You know OP, you really should put Arrested Development up there. People will tell you it's the funniest thing ever. It is admittedly pretty clever with how it sets up jokes but the whole thing becomes a total wankathon with its silly self aware humour. Being self-referential for its own sake is not particularly funny.

That said, it's still a show that people should check out. Unlike Boardwalk Empire which is a perfect example of why big money and big talent doesn't always mean quality.

Is "The Walking Dead" highly rated? Not by most people here it wasn't. Ditto for "The Killing" - it was torn apart by the end. I voted them anyway.

Main one though is "The Sopranos". Sure it's well acted, and the first few seasons are good, but beyond that I agree with latenia. A very over-rated show.

The Walking Dead. brilliant pilot, but just couldn't sustain it...practically zero character development

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,200 ✭✭✭Mindkiller

Deadwood is almost a criminally underated show in terms of viewers. It has a considerable reputation, but nowhere near enough people have seen it. You will not find better acting in any TV drama.

ive just started watching deadwood and i love it so far

    .

Replace 'Arrested Development' with 'The Office'..........I swear to god, I heard so much about this when it started first, I tried to watch one episode, but to be honest, if you put a camera in MY office, it'd be a hell of a lot funnier!

I haven't watched most of those shows but out of the 3 I have watched, Breaking bad, walking dead and true blood, walking dead is the lame duck.

Poll is throwing up a few surprises, Rome has the least votes!
As for missing shows, i wanted to stick to the premium/quality shows....not saying the others aren't, but many are network shows.
How AMC's The Killing hasen't racked up more votes i'll never know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lost would be my pick but it's not on the list.

This won't win me many fans round these parts but I think Community is a little overrated. I think my main problem is that I find Joel McHale to be a really unlikable lead.

I absolutely despised McHale until a few episodes of 'Community'..
Oh God... is he the host of 'The Soup'? Christ, he's irritating!

Will give the pilot a look later.

But once you watch a few episodes.. you realise he really has a natural comedic presence.. I can't picture any other actor in that role to be honest. He's made it his own.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 239 ✭✭TheEscapist

I'll probably give it another try, I heard the season ended really strongly and I have a couple of mates who really love it. I think my dislike for the Soup didn't help McHale's cause really.

Not sure if the poll is representative... The more popular and watched shows (sopranos, mad men, wire, true blood...) Will likely get marked down more compared to the less known shows like Rome, deadwood, even breaking bad etc.

Still an interesting thread. For me It's hard to decide but I'm swinging towards the sopranos. It's fantastic of course, but so is the hype associated with it. Also, true blood. (did I just self fulfill my first paragraph:rolleyes:)

Which would work with "over-rated" rather than bad.

I voted for walking dead which was bad bad bad. Not sure if it was ever rated though.

Can a show be truly 'overrated' if it's underwatched? Walking Dead and True Blood have huge audiences but aren't regarded as masterpieces by any stretch. Whereas shows like Carnivale and Deadwood are like the opposite of that.

    Can Carnivale be 'overrated'?

by the looks of things, im going to have to start watching Breaking Bad. Where can i find it lads/lassies?

The Walking Dead started fairly well but went downhill since.

Your local HMV has the first two seasons for €12.99 each.

No west wing? Guess that confirms it isn't over-rated. Just brilliant.

With regard to The Killing, it's probably not getting many votes because most people probably don't think it's been given much praise either by the critics or the public.

A show can be crap and not overrated.

Exactly. I'd question the point of it being in an over-rated poll when nobody really - critics or the public - rated it very much in the first place. Just because it was on AMC doesn't mean it deserves a place here, especially when you can put in shows like "Lost", "Battlestar Galactica", and "The West Wing" which were highly praised by fans and press and achieved cult followings. [Note: I'm not saying they're over-rated, merely that they could have a place in the poll...]

I would be interesting to have the same list of shows (in another thread/poll) and see which ones are the most underrated and under watched! Maybe suggestions for which ones we should be watching!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,772 ✭✭✭civis_liberalis

    Breaking Bad
    The Walking Dead
    Boardwark Empire
    The Wire
    The Sopranos

I have seen every episode of these and have never seen an episode of any of the others.

The five above live up to the hype, no doubt, although in the case of Boardwalk Empire I can see how it might underwhelm some, but it is right up my alley really.

Having recently done the Sopranos marathon from scratch, it is fresh in the mind and have to put it on a par or a close second to The Wire.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 941 ✭✭✭Bodhidharma

The Wire - I swear this show is like a sacred cow or something, say one thing against it and you're likely to be committed.

I didn't love it. I watched all of it, enjoyed bits and pieces, and don't particularly see it as a waste of time or anything BUT it is not the best show ever as some critics love to suggest. I thought the last two series were a bit dull to be honest.

I have watched The Sopranos all the way through about 4 times, Arrested Development probably the same, Curb, South Park, Peep Show and many others more than once. The thought of watching The Wire from start to finish is not nice.

As an intellectual piece, yes I get it, it's good, but for enjoyment, I'm afraid not.

The Wire by a country mile. It's a decent show but comically overrated.
True Blood also. I used to rate it highly myself but it was wishful thinking.

Can't say I'm aware of the guy, or his body of work.

I will say Joel McHale didn't work playing the Chris O Dowd role in 'The IT Crowd' remake though.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,919 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

He played Nathan Barley and was in a couple of sketch shows. I just always thought he and McHale were the spit of one another.

People who were like that towards me before I had seen any of it seriously annoyed me. Gushing about it to each other, but I have to say I know what they are on about now. No need to be obnoxious about it to other people though.

I agree. It's not as funny as I thought it would be.
I've seen it described as the funniest comedy ever a few times.
It's good enough but not as funny as Seinfeld or Curb and it's not even close.
