Jasus I Couldnt Live there with all them "Africans"

I live in a certain area that has quite a few people who would be of African Decent. Now in the last 2 months between tradesmen and people i know . I have heard the following comments

"Jasus how do you live out here with all them blacks"
"That place is like Nicaragua now"
"You live in _____ thats like little Africa"
" I used to live there too but i had to move because the Africans were taking the place over"

Why do so many people have a problem with Africans living in there estate / area? They dont actually bother me or do anything.
In fact I would be more concerned about the local Scumbags!

And the BIGGEST joke ... the Very people who made these comments are actually from some of the roughest parts of Dublin, I would NEVER even consider living in from fear. Mystifying!

They're more visibly distinguishable so you notice them and thus it can look like they're the vast majority of immigrants.

You could pass a dozen Poles on the street and not take heed but you'd notice one African.

I get the same, OP.
I live in Balbriggan and it is really sad that there are so many Irish people who speak in such an insulting and racist way about people who have moved to Ireland for a better life.
I wonder is it just easier to insult African people cos they stand out more for being different, (skin colour, traditional African clothes, culture, religion etc.).

My last day of work, I was sitting on the top level of the #43 bus leaving Swords Business Park. A middle aged man got on the bus and sat down on the seat right across the aisle from me. I saw him looking at me and then looking out the window, but I was thinking that he must be looking at all of the bags that I was carrying or trying to read what was written on my jacket.

I then began to notice him looking at Black people specifically. He then says very loudly with his face looking out the window: "N*ggers everywhere!"

I turned to glare at him but he didn't turn towards me again until it was his time to get off the bus. I looked directly at him and he looked directly at me, biting down on his lip with a look of disapproval. I just grinned and told him to have a good day.

I found the whole incident ironic because my second day in Ireland, I encountered young lads throwing rocks at me and telling me to go back to Africa, and here I was sitting on the bus, the day before I was supposed to depart to go back to the States, and this fine older gentleman shows his ass.

I think there is a superficial facade hiding the fact that there is a significant portion of Irish society that holds negative feelings towards Blacks and Asians.

Tell me, did you find the States to be your panacea? I have heard anecdotal reports that there is a significant lack of racism and racial profiling there.

Cured me of "the rascism" fairly quick as it happened, cos the blacks and the Irish ended up hanging together. I'm a sociology student in a race and ethnicity course based in Ireland; many members in my department are presently conducting research on racism in Irish society. They are looking at racism experienced by taxi drivers, the availability of social welfare programs, and the inner workings of hiring practices here in Ireland. My statements are based upon what they have uncovered through their interviews and other methods and what I have read and observed through my own research.

No, but saying that a significant portion of Irish society is racist is quite the generalisation for someone who comes from America where racism was and still continues to be in certain parts to be quite a big problem.
