Here's my first bargain alert! Oh the excitement. If you want a good cordless drill, Chadwicks are currently selling an AEG 18v with 2 batteries, fast charger and a 100 piece tool kit, all in a smart case, for €60. Now thats a bargain. However, they have somwhat limited stocks, mainly because every tradesman in the country has snapped one up. BUT, B&Q sell the same drill for €119ish on special offer(should be €200ish). B&Q also operate a price promise, "spot the same item within 10 miles for less and we will match that price plus give another 10% off", so, get a chadwicks special offer brochure, go to B&Q, and get the drill for €54.00inc VAT. I've done it, and to me, it's a complete bargain and extremly useful around the house etc. Thanks for looking, Soln.

There's a Chadwicks outside Lucan village just on the other side of the river. The nearest B&Q from there is the one in Liffey Valley, about 4-5 miles away. Unless the OP meant a different Chadwicks / B&Q combo :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 144 ✭✭greenoverred

    Thanks OP.

Taught I had missed the original offer in chadwicks. Picked up the brochure in Lucan and headed to B+Q in liffey valley. They didnt seem to pleased with giving me the price match. After 20 minutes examining the drill to see if it was the same the manager sent down word that the price match didn't count on special offers. I asked to see the manager because the leaflet on the counter clearly stated that it did. Another 20 minute wait and no manager appeared but he did send down word to "just give it to him". So €54 euro it was. The lady at the desk had to be reminded about the 10% as well.
Thanks again op. a great drill for the price

I ordered one in B&Q Cork Mahon Point for €54 as well.:D

Its not in stock but they let me order one.

Use the brochure for Heiton Buckley (Bishopstown). The offer is on the 1st page.

Chadwicks is > 10Km away which means the price policy wont work for it.

You wont get a free spare battery in B&Q but its still a good deal

the one they ordered for you has a lithium battery.

the one in heiton buckley has nicad batteries. and you get 2.

B&Q limerick were selling both the twin nicad set and the lithium single battery sets for 99e for the last few months.

Not in the market for a drill but Chadwicks and B&Q in Athlone should easily be within 10 miles of each other for anyone interested

    Hey bromley52,
I called in to b&q to order one after reading your post but the lady in there wasn't sure which model it was, any chance you could post the model number or the San number from the docket when you get a chance.
    many thanks,

The one I got was this. They can use EAN: 4002395131259 to look it up.

Glad to see some people got a bit of use from this! The drill bq have is the exact same model, BSB 18G, and it includes 2 nicad battries (which I reckon are way better than the LI-Ion ones, but thats another story). BQ will NOT be happy when you look for this offer, but hey ho.:D

Thanks for the tip. Got the same one in B and Q tallaght. The staff there had a good look at the chadwicks brochure to check it was the same model but I got it for 54 Euro after they confirmed the model number. I was told that they had already emailed Chadwicks about their price but had not got a reply. The staff member scanning the item had a bit of a problem applying the 10% discount - didn't know how to do it - but other than that it was a no quibble transaction.

I guess if they have a policy which gives 10% discount off their competitors price they can expect to have to honour it sometimes. I always shop in B&Q so I feel no guilt in claiming this discount.

Great drill by the way. Happy days. :)

Apparently this price is way below cost, my mate owns a huge hardware store and he has stopped selling this brand because he reckoned it was just not worth the hassle, what with people bringing them back after 11 months looking for a replacement, having worked them to death in trade! Apparently AEG were not impressed with the Irish attitude to a 12 month warranty!:D

There is a 3 year warranty if you register online within 30 days of purchase. Just look for the details on a little booklet in with the drill...

Actually it’s the same one (2 x Nickel Cadmium Battery).
I didn't actually get it at the time and someone posted that the one I got had the lithium battery so I posted that as well. Sorry for any confusion
B.t.w., B&Q(Cork) are getting it into the store either this afternoon or at latest Monday/Tuesday.

Thanks for clearing that up, did you have an official brochure from Heiton Bukley or will a home print off do to get B&Q to price match

    I used

    1) A printout of the Heiton Bukley 1st page which shows the drill.
    2) Print out of details from UK website as I linked in a previous post.
    3) Print out their price policy. The relevant paragraph is under 'Shopping at B&Q'.

Once you have all these they have no option but to hand it over for €54.

The price policy terms and conditions say that the other retailer must have it in stock. If asked by B&Q just say you dont know if it is or not and point at the bottom of the 1st page of the printout which indicates the promo is on until the 31Jul2011.

nope, two batteries. I've actually bought 3 sets of these for myself and my mate came in with me and got one as well! They're ideal for work and the toolkit is very useful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,467 ✭✭✭Lucifer

Got one myself in the Tallaght branch this evening. They were not sure if they could honour it as it is a builders providers, but the rang the manager and were told they could sell it at this price. Came with two batteries.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,859 ✭✭✭bmaxi

    davoxx wrote: »

I remember looking at an AEG drill in B&Q about 6 months ago. It was in a similar case with a similar toolkit but only one battery. I think it was on special too but at less than €99, maybe there was one of those still floating around. Either way, if they advertise it with two batteries then you should get two batteries.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,467 ✭✭✭Lucifer

Thats the same one as I got and got the 2 batteries. Bring it back and change it.

Before anyone rushes back to get 2 batteries.

The pack with the 1 battery is more than likely Li-On battery. (About 2 to 3 times the price of NiCd so you only get 1)

The other pack contains 2 x NiCd batteries.

There are many pros and cons of each but from what Iv found

NiCd = Home use (One /week)
    Li-ON = Trade

Read this for more help on making a decision on the correct one for you.

    ok - so all sorted.

seems like there were two different sets - one with one battery which is on the shop floor, the other with two batteries which was in the back stores.

i apparently have the last two sets from liffey valley.

i now have a spare set as a friend who asked me for one, got one himself, so if anyone wants one, pm and it's yours, otherwise i'll return it tomorrow.

Myself and a mate collected one each today from B&Q in Naas. Chadwicks (Also in Naas) are running a special on this drill for 60e (sold out now), so with the price match and the extra 10% it worked out as 54e like the OP said.

I printed off the Chadwicks offer of 60e from the following link (centre of page 2)
    http://www.chadwicks.ie/component/flippingbook/book/4.html?page=1

And brought with me a print out of the B&Q deal to show its the same drill
    http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?action=detail&fh_secondid=11047506&fh_location=//catalog01/en_GB/categories<{9372015}/categories<{9372047}/categories<{9372203}/categories<{9392094}/specificationsProductType=cordless/specificationsSpecificProductType=combination_drills

They had loads there and they had no problem honouring in the deal. The drill is priced at 95e and is right beside the tills.

They did however say that they sent a email to head office about the price matching problem but haven't heard anything back yet so they are honouring the deal until they hear other wise.

    Mine came with 2 batteries.

    Thanks again OP.

    OP

God bless you, this is a great bargain alert.
I drove down to Athlone today, went into Chadwicks to check if they had stock, none left, so took their brochure and went into B&Q. They honoured the deal and asked me in return if I would fill in their online survey and mention the two girls which I will gladly.
B&Q have loads in stock at €95 and honour the deal at €54. The unit has 2 NiCad batteries.

And on the way home, got petrol at €1.43.9 in Knockcroghery.

Plenty of both Ni-cad and li-ions ( all on display an the back end of the powertools section ) in Airside ( as of 5.15pm today )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 522 ✭✭✭Alfie1

Got one in B&Q Mahon Cork today :D

Thanks again OP & all who provided the info

PS Li-ions only on display but I got them to check the product code & they have some of the Ni-cad ones in stock.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,463 ✭✭✭Solnskaya

Glad all the Boardsie are getting the bargain! BTW, on the Li-ion vs NiCd issue, Li-ion is waaay over-rated. Yep, they do initially give much more power and hold charge etc longer, but they also die verrry rapidly if not pampered, and I'd rather Ni-Cad any day. I use my cordless tools all day every day for trade use, and will no longer buy Li-ion having gotten ver poor battery lifespans on what are a pricey bit of kit. Thanks, Soln.

B&Q Galway refused to give a price match on the drill. They said since the drill was not available to buy in Chadwicks and was not going to be back in stock, they wouldn't price match it.
There was about 15mins of frantic phonecalls and I think they even rang Chadwicks before refusing.

Bummer, needed a new drill and all!

surely they must price match the fact that they already price matched (if that makes sense?)

get a copy of the price matched receipt and then set them on fire, i mean show them it, and get it price matched to that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,264 ✭✭✭witnessmenow

In fairness to B&Q it does make sense that the product needs to be in stock in the rivals store, sure chadwicks could attempt to put B&Q out of business by having a single drill in each store for a €1 and let it be price matched to B&Q for the next two months!

Well then it's up to B&Q to make that distinction. Nowhere on their blurb does it say anything about price matching being dependent on competetitors stock levels.
B&Q, like all retailers who make promises like this, know they run the risk of taking a hit sometimes. This is one of those times and frankly it'll do them more harm than good when it gets out that they renege on their promises and I for one, am putting it out today.

Not exactly in those words but see below ;)

    Shopping at B&Q
You can not purchase B&Q products online in the Republic of Ireland but the staff in our 9 stores are waiting to help when you visit. And don’t forget our Price Promise

If you find any product even 1c cheaper anywhere else, we’ll refund the difference and give you an extra 10% off the lower price.

We’re so confident our prices in store are cheaper than our competitors, that if you buy a product from us and find the same product (or the equivalent in the case of the B&Q Brand) available locally for less – even if it’s a sale or special offer price – we’ll not just match that price but we’ll beat the lower price by a further 10% for your trouble. All we ask is that the lower price is generally available to any potential customer on the day that you call back, within 14 days of purchase, with a proof of purchase. Please ask in store for full Terms & Conditions.

To go slightly OT, has anyone tried to register their drill for the 3 year warranty?

Trying to do it today. You have to select the 'Device Designation' from a drop down list on the warranty registration page. On the side of the drill is the code 'BSB 18G' but this isn't in the list. Can anyone shed some light as to which is the correct option to select? Thanks.
