Great game yesterday. He makes it all look so simple, he's one of the players I love to watch playing. Easy to forget him sometimes with all the publicity Cooper, Donaghy and Galvin get and I'm sure it suits him down to the ground.

Put €20 on him to win it today;)

Think he still underrated as footballer, he is fantastic player.

Goes about his business with no nonsense manner seems sound too.

Declan O Sullivan, is definitely on top at the moment and Darren Sullivan isnt too far behind him. Super players for Kerry.

I like Declan O'Sullivan as a footballer. As a Limerick supporter I've seen him do huge damage to us down through the years. I haven't ever seen a player as comfortable with the football as him. Even the way he solos the ball looks effortless. It's as if he glides along the surface. Even at the end of the game yesterday he was calm and assured with the ball and took control. I think he's a more important player to Kerry than Cooper to be honest.

Some of the points he can kick from distance are sheer class. Off the left and the right, he makes it look so easy. Well able to take a tackle and just gets on with the game. Just a great player to watch. He really stood out yesterday and usually when I'm at games I don't really notice brilliant performances. Thought he was the difference yesterday.

Wasn't he given a rough time from the Kerry "supporters" the first time he was made captain? He has proved them all wrong over the years.

Far too early to say just yet. Declan O'Sullivan had a good game Sunday but he has a long way to go yet to be winning POTY.

No one has really stood out that much so far. POTY will be heavily influenced by what hapens from the 1/4 finals onwards.

Footballer of the year so far....

Have to say from a Dublin perspective that Bernard Brogan,Alan Brogan,Mossy Quinn and Dermot Connolly would be our contenders.

Way too early as the championship is the yardstick even though most of the games every year are played by league end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,789 ✭✭✭✭keane2097

Declan O'Sullivan has to be close to the GOAT centre forward imo.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,758 ✭✭✭Strongbow10

Senan Kilbride of Roscommon is a dark horse, he will get alot more publicity when he rips Mayo a new one in the Connacht Final.

As a full forward hes the perfect target man but he has brilliant vision aswell. Kicks some ridiculous points and has been unplayable on some of the best backs in the country in the all ireland club championship in 2010-2011

You're having a laugh? Mossy Quinn or Connolly will be doing well to ever be guaranteed starters for their county, let alone All stars or POTY.

You must be new. You'll get used to Blackbelt and the blue tinted glasses after a while. Best was the year he suggested Jason Sherlock for an All-Star when Dublin were using the lad as an impact sub and weren't even starting him

Paddy Bradley has been excellent for Derry and probably Johnny Doyle for Kildare as well. O'Sullivan was exce;;ent last week and is the front runner in my book.
And reviewing the Moderators humourous opinions why don;t you add in two superstars this year so far ...Graham Geraghty (injured but probably done enough to guarantee an all star ;) ) and Eoghan the Dub "STAR" ...:)

Declan O'Sullivan is the clear leading candidate. The likes of Johnny Doyle, Michael Murphy and Alan Brogan are outside candidates. Cork will have a few runners too in time mind you. Wouldn't be surprised if Goulding, Shields, Pa Kelly were up there at the end of the season...

Murphy has not done much to date yet but suppose a victory in the Ulster final(fingers crossed:)) with him having a starring role could put him in the frame but very early yet to be predicting POTY when still 3 provincial finals to be played yet.

I'd imagine he means Eoin Bradley. TBH, it's too early to see who is a consistent top performer. Most teams have only played 2 games and, at max, 3. A player has to be at top performance for the majority of the championship, like Bernard Brogan last year, to be crowned player of the year.

When its down to the last 4, is when the real contenders will be known. The two Brogans would be up for it alright (not sure where Blackbelt got the other two) but alot depends on Dublin's progress. The same goes for Johnny Doyle, Declan O'Sullivan and the other candidates mentioned.

To be up for player of the year, your team needs to make the AI semi-finals at least, if not the final.

Obviously you hadn't seen much of the league or Dublin for that matter.Mossy throughout the league has been scoring quite a number of goals.

Also Diarmuid Connolly is on fire this year.He is certainly nailing down his spot as far as he can in a regime that differs very much from Pillars.

I doubt very much that Mossy will feature in the list come September but for the first half of the year he has been one of the standouts for Dublin.Thats why I said for Dublin.

I think the Brogans will be there, thereabouts if we win Leinster and the quarter finals.

Mossy Quinn or Connolly are or will be no where near Footballer of the Year. When Dublin play the big teams they'll be no where to be seen as they have shown before

This is the championship not the league.

He played well in the Laois game but was no where to be seen in the Kildare game so hardly on fire...

Didn't standout very much in the legaue final when Dublin needed him did he?

Johnny Doyle will be in with a shout if Kildare get to the semi-final, also agree With the comments about Declan O' Sullivan, he is a superb player.

Was Connolly not taken off the last day?

He has potential and talent to be decent, but im not sure he has the temperament.

As for Mossy...don't be kidding yourself..this topic is called Player of the year, his name is never going to be involved in that discussion.

not sure about johnny doyle, eamonn callaghan has been more important to kildare this year so far. bernard brogan in contention again but he is being marked far tighter this year than last. declan o'sullivan a class act for kerry so far, if they make it to late august he will be a good bet for it.

Very strange how Cork have no "stand out" performers.
Goulding top in the betting but he's hardly superstar material in fairness.
If Cork win the All-Ireland the award could be going outside again.

Connolly was nowhere to be seen in the Kildare match. The next game is huge for him because a poor performance and he'll be dropped I'd say. And, tbh, in regard to these awards, league form doesn't matter much.

Quit reading The Herald sh!teing on about how great Dublin are and watch a few other games.

Mossy Quinn hahahahahahahahaha he can't even start a game!

Diarmuid Conolly, where was he against Kildare?????

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,256 ✭✭✭closeline

Well, you can clearly see on this how little people know about the GAA on this...Paddy Bradley..ha
Mossy Quinn??Has he got a run in the championship yet..And he hardly had a great league especially when he went back to his old ways in the final.

I would have to say Declan O'Sullivan is the front runner at the moment. Alan Brogan is surely second and ahead of Bernard. 2 man of the match awards already.

i'll call back in september when people are not giving knee jerk reactions and slagging off each others equally short sighted candidates.

Sure if it was now that lad that hit 4 goals for meath would probably get it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,294 ✭✭✭thee glitz

Cian Ward has to be in with a shout - he's got a 4 goals per game record so far :D

The chances are that it will go to a player from a finalist county, which Meath
    haven't been for 10yrs.

You have forgotten that in the league final Gilroy made the totally wrong decision to take off Connolly when it appeared Dublin were cruising. After himself and Brogan went off (injured) it fell to pieces for Dublin.

Thats funny...I must have been dreaming about some games happening.Doesn't the GAA intercounty calendar not go from January until September?

Title of thread - Footballer of the year.If we want to specify it,why don't we call it "player of the championship so far".

Eh, you ARE dreaming if you think the league has any relevance to FOTY...OR if you think Mossy Quinn is a candidate.
Footballer of the year, IS BASED on the championship. Allstars largely are also, with maybe the odd token one from the league...surely you have realised this by now...

Be pedantic if you want but my 2 year old nephew knows that league performances have no influence at all on the Player Of The Year award.

Oh I have but if you want to specify, maybe we should change the thread title.I'm not saying Mossy is going to get anywhere near it but if anyone read my previous post,I merely stated from a Dublin point of view who have been the standout players FOR DUBLIN from the league on to date.

So a year being 12 months, thats what I took into account.

Which is the folly of the GAA which is rubbing off on its fans.If the GAA want its fans to support the leagues, make it more relevent.

I attend all the games that I can and that would be 90% of them at least. So I take them seriously and for a thread like this,I will give my perspective.I don't think I'm being pedantic when I spend money to support my team and the games and then be told that January to May doesn't count.

First time posting on here but have to agree with the player of the year sentiments.
Its either player of the year or player of the summer, but have to say so far player of the championship for me has to be karl lacey from a donegal point of view

Mossy Quinn & Diarmuid Connolly really showed today why there in the running for player of the year, more over Quinn.....

I think after dublins performance today there isnt one dub player who gave a POTY performance, plenty of football left to play though

If Kildare go far and Mick Foley keeps up his form he'll be in with a great chance

After today's performance, very doubtful. Bernard Brogan will not be winning the title this year again.

Get back in your box. I'm not the only one ridiculing you. I don't know what you expect when you come out with these outrageous blue tinted statements.

It's common knowledge that the league counts little when it comes to player of the year and its common knowledge that neither of those lads would be in with a prayer.

Connolly was off after 30 minutes yesterday and Quinn was sent on and then taken back off. You believe the usual Dublin hype about these lads though.

If I was you I'd cut your losses now and stop trying to justify your ridiculous and biased opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 151 ✭✭Carthy303

Suggestions of Quinn and Connolly are laughable!Declan O Sullivan is the leading candidate at the moment but FOTY was never handed out in mid July.It will all depend on the month of August/September when the Q/F's S/F's and Final are played.Thats when we'll see the true contenders take shape!

McHugh, Thompson and McFadden have been impressive for Donegal but no real stand out performer. One of them makes more sense than picking a Kerry player from one match.

Far too early to be calling it.

If Kerry made the semi-final or final, Declan O'Sullivan has to be odds-on to win the award. He has been magnificent this year so far, and if he keeps to that standard no one will catch him imo.

What do you mean by "Picking a Kerry player from one Match"?

Declan has played brilliantly in the 3 games so far this year, 0-12 scored and a hell of a lot more set up.
He's worked tirelessly and is well deserving of the plaudits he's getting.

Makes far more sense then picking a random Donegal player because they've played ok, but not stood out.

Lads what has gone before is irrelevant. Players of the year will only be judged from now on. the last 8/12.

At the moment the front runners are Down: Coulter, Kerry: Declan O'Sullivan, Kildare: J.Doyle, Dublin : Alan Brogan, Wexord: Ben Brosnan, Cork: Goulding, Tyrone Cavanagh,
    Donegal : Murphy/McFadden.

This could and possibly will change in the next 7/8 weeks. Whoever puts in some big performances individually will jump to the top. Its the business end now, when awards are handed out this is waht its judged on.
