Silly things you used to be afraid of when you were younger

When I was around 8 watched a movie (not sure of the name of it, basically a couple took pictures of their 3 or 4 year old daughter jumping on the bed and playing with just a vest on and the guy developing the photos reported it as child pornography) it was also around the same time I found out about copyright.
I had a disposable camera full of loads of pictures that I really wanted developed then I also took a couple of pictures of Sabrina on TV. I convinced myself that this was some sort of copyright thing and that I was gonna be locked up for life so i spent weeks trying to figure out what to do before hiding the camera and never telling my parents.

Theres loads of other less dramatic things but I cant think of any atm

Oh on the topic of jail my brother waned to be a garda and he told me he'd put me in jail for life because I tried to skate in his 7 sizes too big roller blades.

I was afraid of those grates on the footpath outside pubs. I used to think I would fall between the bars.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,489 ✭✭✭sh1tstirrer

When I was 3 years old I said that when I grow up that I would never walk to our local pub as there was a hill on the way there and I though that if I walked up the hill that I would fall back down again :(

When going to bed, I'd turn off the lights downstairs and sprint to my room as fast as I could to avoid being attacked in the dark.

I had another version of that...when I used arrive home drunk ,I,d stand at my bedroom door and jump on my bed as it spun by me....

Edit - I was afraid of being sent to jail for taping songs off the radio.

I know! Well of course I was afraid of ghosts and all the rest of it but I just remembered the copyright thing and how stupid it was but I remember being really scared about it.
Thought maybe there were some other nutters out there too :D

When I had to sleep in the other room I wouldn't stretch my legs out in the bed because of what lived at the bottom......

I was watching the Late Late Show once, I was about 5/6. There was something to do with Thomas The Tank Engine around the time, anniversary or something.
Anyway, they had a special guest; The Fat Controller. But he moved!
Having been an avid Thomas The Tank fan (Not masturbation, yet) I had never seen any of the characters "move" per se, so this terrified me, and I had nightmares of trains and fat people moving for the following few weeks

    The wooden spoon.

I was never hit with it, but I always knew that when my mum took it out and put it on the table in front of me it meant "if you're not good I'm going to beat the daylights out of you". Don't know how I knew, but even now she says it was a life saver every time I was misbehaving at dinner.

While I don't think children should ever be hit, I think it's a real pity that you can't really threaten kids anymore.

When the wardrobe door was slightly open, I was afraid of the monsters within. I was convinced there was someone in there looking at me.

Jumping into bed so my feet were not hanging around the bottom of it for too long in case I was dragged in.

Scary things in my room can't attack me if I put my head under the cover.

    Flushing the toilet.
    The hoover.
The wardrobe in my room (thought a witch lived in it).

Snakes at the bottom of my bed. I think it must have come from watching too much Home and Away. There was one Home and Away episode where a snake crawled into Shannon's (Isla Fisher's) bed. I didn't get to sleep that night.

In retrospect, I think that snake/ Isla Fisher storyline was a durty australian metaphor.

Floating in to the sky - used to freak out quietly when I'd accidentally loose a helium balloon, I'd get dizzy looking at it going up and could feel myself going with it and thinking what is holding me here but that if I think too much about it maybe I will go up like the balloon. No drugs were involved.

Our garden hedge - thought there were werewolfs in it

JCB's used to freak me out when I was younger. They were so big and loud and yellow. I was always convinced that they would plough into me. :(

    And the dark, obviously.

Flies, or as I called them as a kid: creatures!

I also used to, and sometimes still do, flush the toilet and leg it back to my room during the night convinced I would be attacked in the few seconds when no one could hear me scream.

The Closet Monster was defintely the big one and of course the threat..."wait until your father gets home" which was the most idle threat ever, I discovered at the age of 16;)

I thought they was a man with a blue face living in the bushes across from my house when i was very young. Dont know where that came from, but it was weird.

    Unsolved Mysteries.

Was convinced any time I went to the shed to get fuel I'd never be seen again.

Said shed was 5 feet from the back door but we had no light so it sacred the beJesus outta me.

On second thought maybe I was just afraid of the dark

I used to be afraid of putting my limbs outside of the bed for fear of an unknown hand pulling me into the depths of wherever.
