Normally you see that a lot of a specific model of car are white, the Golf GT being a prime example but am I imagining it or are there an awful lot of white Audis (especially A3 and A4) around these days?

a similar increase in knobheads has been noticed.

    I'm sure there's a direct correlation

Probably because metallic paint is 2k extra.

Nothing to do with an Audi,
But I would like to correct you there,
When I bought my car new last year I had a choice of any color including metallic's at no extra charge ;)

When the white on some Audis is well polished up it looks quite good, the cars tend to have well shaped and well defined lines, and not as many curves as some other cars and thus white suits it. You also have to realise that a lot of people choose the colour based on a valeted car in a well lit showroom, and not in a grey cul de sac on a wet March evening when the car is dirty, big difference.

they look class in white,,in fact any car does,,only colour i would buy them in :)

That has nothing to do with it, you can get virtually any car in non-metallic red and black, you don't have to go for white.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,860 ✭✭✭stimpson

Metallic paint on an A4 is 1100 quid. Maybe badge snobs would rather spend the money on the badge than the paint. But yeah - you can get black or red non metallic for no extra charge.

Because people buy what's popular - they're sheep. When I was selling MINIs, one in three in this country were white. I kept trying to explain to people that they should chose something different, if only for residual's sake, but no, the family down their street had a white one, and they wanted a white one too.

Tbh, B8 A4s look brilliant in white so long as they're debadged and kept looking pristine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

I'm pretty sure most of those are white pearl which costs extra
Cheapo white (van type) looks awful on cars, but a really bright white can look quite well on the right car.

Ireland had very few white cars in the 90s and early 00s so white cars really stand out now. Which is why people are buying them instead of silver.

It was/is the fashion, colour fads come and go.
14% of cars in Europe are White
In Ireland the stats are (2010):
    1 Silver - 24.4%
    2 Black - 24.3%
    3 Grey - 17.4%
    4 Blue - 12.7%
    5 Red - 10.5%
    6 Gold - 4.7%
    7 White - 2.1%
    8 Beige - 1.2%
    9 Brown - 1.2%
    10 Green - 0.7%

For Audi specifically, 4.2% or 134 cars registered new in 2010 are white.

Metallic paint is an optional extra on every model of the Octavia except the one you bought.
It's the same with a lot of "top of the range" models - BMW do the same.
I'd consider it the exception rather than the rule.

I don't think there's a metallic white in the VAG range, certainly none of the Audis or VWs the OP is referring to are metallic white.

IMO far too many Audis and cars in general here are dull as dishwater silver. The choice of the man with no imagination. I fail to see how a small few choosing white (as eye catching as they are) makes them sheep, when the majority of car buyers dont seem to consider anything but plain old silver ("for the resale you see").

One of the first B8 Audi's we ordered was white. Pharma Rep who used to work in car sales ordered it.

Looked fantastic when it arrived in to the garage, but I felt like a total knob delivering it over to him.

Was back with us for sale last year and all the dealers were going batsh1t crazy over it. It did sell for more than the other A4;s we had for sale at the same time. Polished up it looked great. Coming back initially, after 2 years of hard driving, it didn't look so spectacular.

For the very good reason that white reflects away most of the heat of the sun which in Saudi Arabia can turn your car into an oven.

Leaving out the practical issues, there are prejudices in other countries that you wouldn't be aware of like the fact that green is a colour that Italians avoid in cars.

That might be a shocker, but maybe they think it looks good in White?!

Some cars look way better in White, then some fancy metallic paint. Unfortunately I can't say same about a4.

    Hold on.

    If you were in Saudi
Would you prefer to be driving

    A)

White car > Climate Control.. Full Black Interior

    or

    B)

    White Peugot 206 ftw!

    247529_10150191491321502_634481501_7474370_2729077_n.jpg

But I have my eye on a white '89 318i, I'm fed up of having a sensible car. If its kept clean and polished white is quite a striking colour for a car. Very easy to find in parking lots & the added benefit of reflecting the sun.

I have noticed it particularly with the Audi's, Kinda defeats the purpose if every Tom, Dick and Harry has one.

A lad I know has a 2008 A4 in white, nice lad but a pure poser. About 10 of us went shark fishing a few years back, in a dirty ole smelly boot reeking of fish and diesel, your man turns up in designer sun glasses, Armani shorts etc etc :pac:

Why is there so many silver BMW's? I would hazzard a guess BMW have sold way more silver cars than audi have white cars in the las few years.

People like the colour on the car, so what? If I was buying a new car, I'd buy the colour I like, not the colour someone else suggests, even if it was very common.

To be honest, for me, any colour is good once it's not silver. Silver cars are for people with no personality whatsoever! Imo.

Silver is very easy to keep, far easier than any other colour.

Thats a pretty big generalisation! My landcruiser is silver and it just so happens I bought it as I thought it was by far the nicest colour in them. They just look smarter than the two tone ones. To be fair you said 'IMO' but thats the beauty of personalities - they are different....

My Audi is silver, just happened to be a silver one I viewed one day and bought. If I had no personality I would be staring at the wall while reading a hello magazine.

I've had a dark green, red, black and silver car. The reason I got the silver one was because dark colours are very hard to keep.

My current car is black though :o

Having owned a silver car in the past I can say that it is a boring colour. There is no character to it.

Thats why my current car is European Blue, and its one thing people comment most often about on the car; "the colour is amazing!" :D

There's been lots of rubbish posted in this thread (no I don't own a white Audi :D). I do own a blue Audi though...very popular colour for new Audi's in 2008.

As Chris said, it's fashionable at the moment. White Audi's and BMWs are very popular right now in England too, I see them every day.

Maybe the government should offer a subsidy on white cars if we're below the EU average proportion of white cars.

Cause after all we have to strive for the EU average

White is the easiest colour to keep clean and does not really show the dirt. Why else do you thing most vans are white?
