Your unpopular movie opinions

Just as the thread title suggests, what opinions do you hold on movies that go against the grain?

For me, I will admit I love Adrien Lyne movies (Yes, even 9 1/2 Weeks!) and I don't think he gets the credit he deserves for the films he has made.

Fatal Attraction, Indecent Proposal, Unfaithful, Jacob's Ladder, Lolita, Flashdance....I unashamedly love them all!

Also, I really like Superman III - that scene in the junkyard where Clark Kent fights Superman ranks as one of my favourite Superman scenes ever. I also really liked Richard Pryor's character Gus Gorman as well.

...So, anyone else want to share their dirty little movie secrets??

Thing is, he was great in A Time To Kill, but he's wasted himself on formulaic rom com dreck ever since.

Although I haven't seen it, The Lincoln Lawyer is meant to be a return to form for him.

Inception was almost as bad as Cliffhanger

Just because a movie has great special effects doesn't mean that it is any good.

Avatar was a load of crap.
Transformers was and probably still continues to be a load of crap
2012 is presumably a load of crap

    And so on...

    Scarface is seriously overrated.

spot on , I went to see Transformers 3 last night , utter drivel , great special effects but the overall film goes straight into one of the worst film's Ive seen , Avatar was another
other films that didn't live up to the hype ,include Dark knight, Prince of Persia, any of the Saw film's pure manure,

Going to see the Green Lantern on Sunday - believe its not great but hey ho.

Cant watch anything with Michael Cain, Jim Carrey, Marilyn Monroe or Doris Day in it - cant abide any of them!

Boy, you're missing out on some great films.....

Another unpopular opinion is that I think Hollywood should stop making comic book adaptations now. Seriously, enough is enough. Every second film released these days is based on some comic book character or another. It's lazy, boring and formulaic at this stage.

Quentin Tarantino is one of the worst directors in the mainstream and cannot write anything beyond short sketches. Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction are two of the most over-rated movies of all time.

Best Of The Best is the male equivalent of the movie Beaches and should have its own public holiday.

I still have not watched The Big Lebowski

Its up there with Jaws 3 as being watchable crap though, and the Jerry Goldsmith theme tune is magnificent

I own Pearl Harbour on dvd, and have watched it more than once.

a million thanks for this, i like some of Tarantinos movies, but they're all just homages/rip offs of other films, he can put a savage soundtrack to his movies though and there are flashes of brilliance but lately his movies are self indulgent of the highest order. I liked Inglorious Basterds but that "y'know...this might be my masterpiece" line was cringe inducing as you knew it was Tarantinos own opinion of the movie.

probably the single greatest quote I have ever read on Boards....this man knows his sh*t!

80's Action B-movies like American Ninja, Blood sport, Eye of the Tiger, old jackie chan films are fantastic

I have and I didn't see what all the fuss was about.

Saying that, I'm not a big fan of any of the Cohen Brother's films. I tend to find them quite dull and strange (but not strange in a good way...)

I've also never been a fan of Woody Allen. He always came across as something of a whiny creep in his films.

The Godfather. I think it is overrated and dull.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,161 ✭✭✭frag420

    Kill Bill 1 & 2..............dribble

Lord of the Rings, Starwars....................any movie where the fans are willing to sleep on a street outside a cinema so as to get the first ticket to the first showing to be the first to tell there friends they saw it first.

If you have to watch a film more than once to appreciate it, the film is a failure.

Watched 2001: A Space Odyssey last night, and was pretty disappointed. I don't get why it generally ranks so highly (but if perhaps there's something I'm missing, I'd love to know).

GoodFellas - Load of Rubbish in terms of the hype it has.
Tried to watch it 3 times now,but can't make it pass 30-40 mins as its too dull.

If anyone says its the best ever - just think of it this way, they spend the first hour of the movie eating dinner and dancing - you could "Watch come dine with me" instead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,399 ✭✭✭✭r3nu4l

If you have to watch a film more than once to appreciate it, the film is a failure.
But if when you watch it again and again you still pick up some new and deliberate subtlety the film is genius (I'm thinking Gosford Park when I write this!).

On topic. I think the Batman movies are a joke. I've hated each and every one of them.

To follow from that, I can't think of a single offering from Tim Burton that I like. The most overrated filmmaker of all time imo.

His 'dark' motif is boring and his overuse of Johnny Depp for 'quirky' characters is tragic.

I really enjoy Troy for some reason and have watched it about 10 times. Seems to be on tv every two weeks but will sit down and watch the whole thing start to finish again and again.

One page in and I am homicidal. WHAT??? Pulp Fiction is one of the most well written films of all time. Arguably the best!

    ...unbelievable.

EDIT: In response to the Goodfellas comment and others: HAVE YOU PEOPLE EVER CONSIDERED DIALOGUE WHEN YOU WATCH FILMS??? If you watched Goodfellas on mute, then maybe yes it could be perceived as dull, but with the sound on it's genius!

    Haven't seen '2001: A Space Odyssey'..

.. but to be fair, I think I should first try and watch the 2000 prequels that came before it! :P

Ah no, here's three that come to mind (I've plenty more):

    - The Godfather isn't really THAT good
    - I love Empire Records.. I know it's tacky and cheesy, but it's so quotable and fun!
    - I think Shia LaBoeuf is a damn capable little actor, and doesn't deserve the torrent of abuse he gets from movie fans. Watch his performance in 'Holes' again.. he's a cracking little actor!

It's an unpopular opinion thread. Chances are, many people are going to disagree with people's choices, ergo, making them unpopular! Doesn't make them idiotic.

I hate the Rocky films. Even the first one.

Godfather part 1, thought it was fairly boring. Same with 2001: A Space Odyssey. I was pretty underwhelmed by Taxi Driver too, good but not as good as I'd hoped.Could have been too young when I watched them though......

Scarface I thought was very entertaining but more of a parody than anything else, doesn't deserve it's rep although it has some fairly iconic moments for sure.

I didn't make it past the wedding when I tried to watch The Deer Hunter, still not seen Raging Bull.

I think Role Models is one of the funniest films of the last few years, deserved all the success the Hangover got undeservedly....... :(

The end of 'Don't Look Now' was an awful pay off to rather a dull and confusing film.

    Heat was rubbish!

"Two screen legends, DeNiro and Pacino on screen together for the first time" was the hyperbole in the billing.

A disappointment and a let down imo.

I think the Tim Burton Batman films are much better than the Christopher Nolan ones.

I think Inception was childish and boring.

I think the same about the Lord of the Rings and the Star Wars films.

I think Apocalypto is the best action film I've ever seen.

I think Gangs of New York is good and The Departed is bad.

Pi$$ing myself laughing here, the comment alone is hilarious, I IMDB'd the "best of the best" and nearly fell of the chair when I realised what sort of movie it is.

P.s it looks great, will download and watch it!

P.P.P.s Apocalypse now was rubbish too
