Gym near Rathgar (with power rack)

Hi. I've found an interesting program I'd like to do, but it requires a power rack. I was going to join the Swan Leisure gym in Rathmines, but it doesn't have one, and the gym is kinda small. It does seem pretty good apart from that.

Do you guys know of a gym within cycling distance of Rathgar that has a power rack/cage? Or does anyone have one to sell?

    Any help is much appreciated.

Haven't been there but i assume Raw has a power rack. It's just down the road.

Deadly! Thanks, lads. Fitness Dock are doing 3 months for €99 so I'm gonna give that a try. Raw are looking for €299 for 6 months in case anyone was wondering. Been a member of Carlisle twice and have found the equipment gets worse all the time. Not been replaced for a while.

Having used both gyms, I'd recommend Raw. It's also worth your while calling into Raw and telling them of the deal that the Fitness Dock have, and asking them whether they could match or better that offer.

Also, which may be important if you're a beginner, I've found the staff in Raw to be way more knowledgable and helpful.

I called into Raw yesterday evening to check it out and really didn't like the place. Rubbish, pounding euro trance playing too loud on crappy speakers and it was full of lads who looked like they were taking things a little too seriously. I just want to get back back in shape, but it looks like a whole lifestyle for these guys.

Fitness Dock were very friendly, and it seems like a more relaxed place to be. The three members of staff who I was talking to were sound and they certainly knew their stuff, so I'm gonna sign up on Monday. I probably would even if they were charging €299.

Just FTR, there's a difference between lads who know what they're talking about, and lads who sound like they know what they're talking about.

The one time that I trained in Raw I thought it was a fantastic setup.
Also I would way prefer to train in a place where folks are really motivated, think that attitude definitely rubs off

Really? Well, sh*t. I wish I'd figured that out before now.

    Hey!
Just got a flyer in the door from this place the other day, it's new so you'd have to ring 'em to see about power rack. Great value on the surface though!!

Looks good. Can't argue with €19 a month and no contract. Not open until September, but they've got a power station and they're above Superquinn in Ranelagh so closer than town. Will probably join here after the Fitness Dock. Thanks for the info.

That is Jackie Skellies new incarnation.
I wouldn't have anything to do with her or Mark Tooke if my life depended on it.
    Avoid like the plague folks.
    You heard it here first.

Perhaps. You certainly make a strong argument. My main reason for picking the Fitness Dock is that it isn't full of determined looking beefcakes stomping around the place. You're lifting weights, not f*cking curing cancer.

I'm capable of doing my own research based on my needs, so advice isn't a priority. I want a decent place with friendly staff, good facilities and a male/female ratio approaching 1:1. Fitness Dock has that. I also have no reason to believe that they give bad advice.

You're looking for a leisure centre not a gym.

Well, its a training facility. There are professional and semi-professional athletes training there, along with some of the best powerlifters and bodybuilders (male and female) in the country. There's tonnes of lads training for schools rugby, provincial underage teams, ex and future Ireland internationals, a few olympic hopefuls, triathletes, fighters in various disciplines yada yada yada... So for many of these people it is a lifestyle, and its worth taking seriously.

If you're intimidated by the male/female ratio you should have popped in earlier when the zumba/pole dancing/bums & tums/spinning and bootcamp classes were on. Not that its just girls that do them, the vast majority of our female members are encouraged to kick ass lifting weights too you see, not do some sit ups, a chest press machine and read OK magazine on the recumbant bikes :)

Yeah, it makes more sense now. I guess it's a great place for all the people you mentioned, but not what I'm looking for personally. I'm glad to hear you're running such a well respected facility. You're obviously providing people with what they want. Fair play. Might wanna get some new speakers though.

I was a member of the fitness dock until the end of June! In March April all members were informed that the Gym had gone into receivership. I would be very reluctant to join again as it could collapse at any stage!

None of that excuses Pounding Euro Trance.
    For shame.

    I don't understand the need for a male:female ratio, who gives a ****, you're there to train.

And personally I love seeing determined people work out, it gives myself some encouragement and often when I see people lifting huge I'm be saying to myself, "I wanna do that!"

While I think your selection criteria for a "gym" is utter crap. You are probably better off in fitness dock. I think people were just a little surprised at your attitude to "determined looking" people lifting weights given that you were looking for a power cage. (btw, what is the program)

"Commercial gyms" are full of people who like to look like they are working out. It's a very nice and friendly environment. The staff give out high fives and trendy catchphrases. For some people this environment is prob better as they have fun and keep going (which is the main thing imo).

The people who are there to work hard and push themselves will no doubt be better off in the gym with other determined people, these people will also have better results guaranteed. But to be fair, not everyone is cut out for this.

Finally, I fully encourage you to do your own research. It can only be a benefit, understanding the basic points of excercise and human physiology can rally help your results. But at the same time, that's no replacement for somebody looking to see if your squat form is correct, or if you stance could be improved. It's the tiny things like this, that help you the most.
