Mine is Vibes & Scribes just off MacCurtain St. I always seem to pick up a few books in there, its usually nice and quiet in there too and the staff are pleasant to deal with.

    What's yours?

Yes, Vibes & Scribes is great when it's quiet inside and raining outside - you'll always discover something of interest, ancient and new. It's not so great if you want to sell them books, though, rates are pretty poor. I suppose shops come in and out of favour according to your interests at a particular time. Just now, I'm re-decorating an old house and see nice things in Yesterdays in French Church Street. Marcus's, off North Main Street, is another little shop I find interesting, with a discerning collection of framed prints.

I could spend hours in Marks Models on Oliver Plunkett St. It's like being a little kid again looking at all the toys models:D

ditto to Vibes and Scribes. I rather like the old style charm of the Paul Street bookshop.

My favourite shop was closed down, along with all the other similar shops around the country, due to a change in legislation. :(

    +1 on vibes, good spot.

Strangely enough for me its Insomnia Cafe. I've taken to sitting in there for 2-3 hours at a time writing or catching up on work emails or whatever, and nursing a few coffees, using their free wi-fi. They must be sick of the sight of me, I suppose spending a fiver over 3 hours may not be their key demograph :p

7.60 for a can of gas i can get for 2 pound in england. Or 59e for that Yuasa NP7-12 battery you can buy online for 16e

True I usually go into them alright when I'm in England to have a look around but only when I'm stuck for something I go into the one in cork. The one in Cork is never that busy either can't imagine them making a whole lot of money out of it, maybe not so many people in Cork who are into that sort of shop

I'd love it if they moved into the centre of the city somewhere,I'd say they'd get busy then :-)

Shop in the English Market (the entrance from Patrick Street) I can never remember the name of the shop but it sells lots of brick or brack, old and new - vintage stuff etc. I love it and have to peep every time I go by (and usually spend). I'm sick of the the big shops that have taken over Patrick Street etc. for years I wished for all those English Chain Stores - and now that they are here - Cork is starting to look like any other High Street anywhere. We need to keep some of our little individual Cork Shops. (Having said that I'm a huge hypocrite - as I love TK Maxx but does that count when it sells everything from anywhere/everywhere). No I cannot justify I am a traitor - but I'm a "shabby chic" fan - so gotta mix the old and new.

when I was younger and had money I liked to head into HMV and grab a few CDs and DVDs but now I realised how much money I've spent in that place over the years and now it's just fairly crap anyway.

If I had to pick a shop I'd have to say Waterstone's and of course John Buckley Sports, great staff and always have the stuff I need in stock but I avoid town these days unless I really need to go in for something.

I used to love Football Crazy, pity its gone now:(. They had the best selection of jerseys and just had a generally friendly atmosphere.
    I also like Waterstones

I know this isn't a shop but I love the Imperial Hotel - I just think it has a charm about it and everything time I go in there I think of the history (Michael Collins spent his last night there, Charles Dickens stayed there amongst others).

Love Lafayettes cafe in there too - the wraps and sandwiches are nom nom and you can sit there for ages with a cup of tea and you don't feel rushed out!

Anyone else think that Waterstones is way too expensive? I've never yet picked up a book in there for less than a tenner and their 3 for 2 offer means you go in there to buy one book and you end up getting 3 of them! ;)

Vibes and Scribes, on the other hand, is a great place to pick up a bargain book.

I do, I like to go in there have a look but I just end up going hone and ordering what I liked from amazon.

Some of the choices here are interesting! I don't shop in Vibes and Scribes on principle, but used to like it. I do like Amity but it's quite overpriced and there isn't really a nice atmosphere in the shop.
I don't know if it counts as a shop but I love O Connells, so nice in the Winter! Ruby and Peacock in the English Market is lovely too and the new-ish vintage shop on Washington St is pretty cool.

Why don't you shop in Vibes and Scribes? What happened to make you stop liking it? (if it's not too personal a question to ask)

Do they still have the piano plate (I think that's what it's called) hanging up on the wall of the shop?

Managed to get a glimpse of the price of one of the Patek's in the window today and it was 30-something grand. It took me ahile and a fair bit of neck-twisting so the physio will be delighted! Class watch (from the proud owner of a Seamaster)

Ah Omega's..so good I bought two!
I wonder if they've ever actually sold a Patek though.

Scott's for Tools on North Main street, but I haven't been in ages

McQuinlans on Oliver Plunkett St., but same story as above.

I like tubes too but its rare I buy anything in there because there so damn expensive.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,836 ✭✭✭TanG411

Home Star on North Main St. - just next to the pub with the scaffolding put up.

Cent Wise where all the old retro consoles are - way too expensive though considering you can get them much cheaper online.

Vibes & Scribes - As people have said, great shop for books. Their 20% off everything sale was brilliant.

I agree with Tea Shop in Imperial Hotel also - I love sitting there and chatting with friends over a cuppa, just soaking up the atmosphere - the history, the tourists - it's that old/new combo again. Feels like a proper tea-rooms - just wish the service was a bit faster at times. J

No that's the one they're talking about alright - on the right as you come in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 776 ✭✭✭Judes

No - it's the same place - cafe / tea rooms on the right as you enter hotel vs. restaurant further back. I love the ceiling.

Italee on Oliver Plunkett Street. Greatest coffee in Cork. And such incredibly good food.

Also Dunnes on Patricks Street because it's the first!

Is that the new place that opened down at the lower end, kind of across from Milanos or Market Lane?

Have to jump on the bandwagon with everyone else, I love Vibes and Scribes, the Bridge Street one moreso. I also really like this little shop on McCurtain Street called Little Buddha. They do a massive selction of teas and flavoured coffees. Highly recommend the Belgian Praline or the Bailey's coffee. Nom Nom!!!

i still go in, but more often than not if i see something(s) i want, i'll check bookdepository online first, usually a third of the price with fee shipping.
they do still do great deals though, 3 for 2's and whatnot, and having a loyalty card is worth it.

Ya exactly. It surprised me. About €5/6 for a great quality sandwich and only €1.50 for an espresso! Mmmm
