Now this seems like a bold statement but let me explain. As a trainer I cant even count the amount of times a client has said to me I want to tone my muscles but not get bigger. The fact is that muscles can do two things:
    1. Get bigger
    2. Get smaller
to see more: Mod note, link removed

read the article and let me know your open on this

Look it's a bs term. We know that.
But language evolves. Always has, always will.
Tone is a word now used to describe definition - rightly or wrongly - and people are going to keep using the term whether we like it or not.

Guess what - ripped, shredded and hyuuoooggee aren't correct anatomical phrases either but they're all part of the lingo now.

MUSCLE TONE: Refers to the amount of residual tension or resistance to movement in a muscle.

I would say that applies to less than 1% of the time that people say tone or toning or tone up etc

I think "toned" is a perfectly acceptable and widely understood term when used to describe a particular physique. It's certainly less cumbersome than "exhibiting a low level of body fat and a moderate degree of muscularity."

When someone says they want to "tone up," it may be worth pointing out to them that this entails dropping body fat % and building or maintaining muscle, as some people have a fallacious notion of what they're actually supposed to do eg. perform 50-rep bicep curls daily and consume Maximuscle Promax.
