Hi folks. I want to buy a sailing boat. I will be working on the beach for the summer as a beachguard and will have lots of time in the morning and evening and I want to teach myself how to sail. I would like to get something that I can sail but can also take out to do a bit of, say, mackerel fishing and be reasonably stable. I have about €1000 to spend. Can anyone offer advice on what I should be looking for? (and where? I am in Cork city) Many thanks in advance.

Get a laser 1. Comes with different sails, so you can pick the one that's right for your weight. If you like it there is great racing on lasers.

Doubt he will do much Mackrel fishing from a Laser.:D

I don't have any better ideas though - for €1,000 your not going to find something that matches both your criteria. If you forget the fishing bit the Laser would do, although the launching off the beach might be a pain in the arse.

Toppers are perfect for launching of beaches, although a waste of time if you are a big heavy fella.

That's a tricky one - plenty to choose from for sailing, but if you want to go fishing you will need a boat you can row or that will take a small outboard.

Most modern fiberglass dinghies just aren't set up that way, so maybe something a bit older like a Mirror dinghy. Rowlocks can be fitted (if they aren't already) or you could put a small 2.5hp engine on the transom when you're not sailing.

Anything bigger like a Wayfarer or an IDRA 14 is much heavier and will be difficult to launch off a beach.

    Good luck.

    Hi
If you want a boat to fish for mackerel dont buy a laser. For €1000 you will find it difficult to get a suitable boat for your requirements however a Mirror or Heron dinghy will be small enough to handle on your own, take an outboard and launch and recover singlehanded (just).

As I am from Skerries I have seen a few guys fishing from mermaids, lovely looking classic boats that have a big following. But I don't think €1000 will get you one, might be worth a look.

Mermaids are indeed beautiful boats, but I'm not sure you'd be able to launch one off a beach - not without the help of the local rugby team though !

Would really need three or more to launch and recover a mermaid off a beach. Are you able to keep the boat on a mooring somewhere?
