Boobs and BMI

I have very large boobs, each weighs about 3 lbs.

I have been losing weight recently and am working towards my healthy BMI, but i have noticed that BMI takes no account of body shape of boob size.

I was wondering if i should subtract a few lbs from the BMI in order to take account of the boobs?

    Cheers.

BMI is bull, according to it im overweight and almost obese... just go by how you look in the mirror, or get your body fat checked.

BMI is valid for the majority of the population.

Dont subtract anything from your weight would be my opinion.

    seriously???

BMI is a good overall starting pointn for any normal member of the public who has not previously done anything with their health. As you progress BMI becomes less relevant as muscle mass improves along with shape and definition.

I would alsways sugest that people focus on body composition and if they can body fat % as a long term measure of their body shape. Weight alone is pretty useless. I am 3/4 into the overweight section of BMI and knocking on the obese door but have a 30" waist (i'm male) and a fairly tapered body and a flat stomach. thanks in no part to lots of resistance training.

Yes if you have disproportionately large boobs it will render bmi inaccurate. I guess you could subtract a few pounds, not sure how many, I guess establish how much average boobs weigh.

You could use other methods like the hip to waist ratio if you want some sort of figure to gauge yourself by, it is considered by many to be better than BMI. There are also calculators for BF% online where you measure various parts, I am not sure which is the best though.

unless you have a decent amount of muscle mass, BMI is a useful indicator.
If you dont have a lot of muscle, and your BMI is near 30, you should take it as a warning sign

Well im going to assume that you are female:eek:.

I (ahem) weighed my boobs a while ago (I wanted to justify the extra pounds that I put on). They weigh less than you would think... But if you want to minus a few pounds (say 2-3 for the 2 boobs, I know they weigh 3 each, but I wouldnt discount them completely) I dont think that it would be the worst thing in the world:).

BMI applies to the vast majority of the population. The arguement that it is unreliable for people like professional sports people and how many rugby players etc would be considered obese, is true and you can discount it if you are a professional athlete, or have a huge muscle mass (and low body fat) otherwise its a good indicator.

Breasts are composed mostly of fatty tissue anyway so I wouldn't discount them. The chances are that your breasts aren't so disproportionate that it will effect your BMI to any great amount.

Getting some calipers and testing body fat would be a better way of measuring if you are that concerned about it. Just keep doing what your doing and you'll get there eventually, don't worry about the BMI number as it's just an indication - it's not exactly precise.

Bigger boobs will cause an increased BMI score. But I'm not sure why you should account for this.

The point of BMI scores, is to determine a healthy weight range for the general population.
If you are over weight, you are carrying more fat, a side effect of this is bigger boobs. Just glad you are carrying it here and not somewhere else

Oh, if you got a breast enlargment, you would prob be ok to subtract the weight of the implants.

Actually this is a far better idea. BMI and even just weight measurement are pretty limited due to composition, and both those figures are distorted by having large boobs

I understand that but you are missing the point. Big boobs, regardless if you've all had them, genetic or not, are basically extra fat you are carrying.
It's probably healthier to carry it there than your tummy, but it's still weight your body is carrying and counts towards your BMI

Yeah I'm wondering myself. Like if you are going to be worried about being so exact, I'm sure there better ways than using BMI? Not to mention that boob size usually changes depending on how much you weigh (or how much fat there is) too, so if you are using BMI as a starting point, I'd say they would go down as the weight goes down.

My friend actually did it in the gym a while back.....put the scales on the counter and boobs on the scales, didn't work very well though!:p

My boobs have always stayed the same size. Obviously by measurements have changed as i have put on or lost weight, but my cup size has remained the same.

As for how i measured them, ammmmm - a kitchen weighing scales and the assistance of my dear husband!

The easiest way to do it is for me to stand on a scales and record my weight, any curious female then stands beside me while I get on the scales, cup her breasts and then record that weight.

THe differential is boob weight. Normally I charge for it, but I'll do a special offer to all boards members and their friends.

You dont need to be a 'professional' athlete or a rugby player or have HUGE muscles for BMI to no longer apply. Any +ve change in lifestyle over even a small period for 'normal' people like myself can render BMI inaccurate to varying degrees.

Health experts will I predict drop BMI in years to come as it's accuracy as a long term measuring device for health is flawed. It's just too little information to make any useful conclusions. But only in the same way that the weight of a car and it's height MAY indicate how fast it will go or what it's fuel consumption would be.

This is just excuse making. Unless the degree of inaccuracy changes from mildly to marginally.

It's great how putting 'boobs' in a thread title has meant that it has descended from health and fitness advice to giggling about boobs and willies :)

I don't think it's great at all. Can you all just leave it there, I've already banned one person in the thread.
