Real world self Vs. Boards self

Is there a discrepancy between your real-life personality and the way you post here (and elsewhere online)?
I think that when I post here I'm fairly representative of how I am in real life: Not too prone to extreme views, try to see both sides of an argument, somewhat bewildered by the world around me, realising five minutes later that I've slightly yet crucially misunderstood what I've heard/quoted.
I think the line's becoming blurred though. Just a little while ago I typed in "the king of moo" when logging into my e-mail account instead of
    my e-mail address
    .
But obviously with the anonymity and lack of emotional interaction online there's plenty of scope for adopting a slightly different online persona, even unconsciously. I sometimes see trolls who I think couldn't possibly be so obnoxious in real life.

Also, looking at my title now and how it could be misconstrued, who'd win in a fight between you and your online self on a Tron-style game grid?

I have far less tact and diplomacy on boards than I do in real life. In fact I tend to be quite passive to opinions I disagree with.

In here, its easier to offer up some views that you might not admit to in reality. Opinions I might not wholly believe.

I dont see how me being more or less of a prick would affect my abilities on a Tron-style game grid thb.

I'm like my user name in real life: an anachronistic artifact used to expel inordinate amounts of hot air.

I thought this was a more classy joke than saying I was hot and always had pussy all over me.

I am pretty much the same here as there.

I'm a little like that myself. I wouldn't tend to get sucked into an argument online too often, but if I see what I consider a particularly bad case of bullsheet or trolling, or just pure nastiness I'll call people on it if no-one else already has.
Yet in real life I'd try to just ignore such nonsense (probably from a vague instinct protecting me from getting beaten up).
I've also only ever been accused of (unintentional) sexism on boards, and I've also never been called an idiot (to my face) in real life, so maybe that indicates some difference between me here and in real life.

Online I can be quite argumentative, confrontational and will not spare people's feelings if it means being untruthful. The fact that I'm the same in person often gets me into trouble.

You could use your connection to the net to exploit glitches and pull some Matrixesque to screw your no doubt bewildered real life self.
My online self would distract me with lolcats, then spam me to oblivion.

Whats this Real Life thing you are referring to?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,030 ✭✭✭✭Chuck Stone

Excellent question and I'd echo much of what you say in the OP. I think I'm fairly close too. I'm a little less forth comming of my opinions irl until I get to know people a little better.

I probably come across as more careful with my use of language online than I would irl because, unlike talking in real life, you can rework a paragraph before you upload a comment.

It's basically the same as Boards and Adverts.ie, with people interacting and trading with each other, only the graphics are way better and you can have a really big, detailed avatar.

So basically, you just annoy people because you think you're always right & speak the "truth"?

Because nobody is always right, the truth is usually subjective & people's feelings are more important than the arrogant belief that you are always right.

Generally speaking, people who "tell it like it is", are difficult to get along with for me. I have far more respect for people who have the presence of mind to assess the situation and speak accordingly.

I'm like that as well. The numbers of things I've said in real life without thinking and wished I could take back is staggering.
I've often found myself starting a post here then deciding not to bother as I've felt it was too silly or not adding anything new to the thread. In fact, I've been much more careful about what I post lately and found myself abandoning posts a lot after my initial giddy posting spree when I first signed up, and have watched my posts per day number drop rapidly.
Now I try to just post if I feel it's something worth saying, in a thread I'm interested in. In fact, even though I come out with stupid pronouncements a lot in real life, my more considered posting is one way in which my online self is becoming more like the real me.

I sometimes have a hard enough time figuring people out in real life so I avoid superficial out there like the plague as much as possible , as well as trolls in here but were all on a level playing field regards posting what we post and only 'we' know what our truths are . It's up to others to agree or believe but if there is one thing I've learned from my time on boards it's really not worth getting tied up in knots about stuff .

    Why?

    I do.

Actually I find it's much more satisfying to **** IRL than virtually.

Unfortunately, some people on the 'net seem to get that the wrong way round.

My Boards self is similar enough to my RL self, except I'm probably a bit sillier at times on here, and a bit shyer IRL.

I'm a smutty b*stard either place though, and what annoys me IRL tends to annoy me on Boards, and vice versa.

I'm considerably quieter in real life. I tend to just agree with people than fight with them, even when I know they're completely wrong. I've kind of given up arguing! I'm also very secretive in real life.

got into a bit of a barney a few years ago with someone who swore blind i wasnt the same in person and online - funny thing was i felt they werent the same. theyre the only one that i met online then irl who felt that way so i think how others perceive us online - or what they think they see in us - plays a part in it really. (or maybe what they want to see, they see)

general consensus is im as batty irl.
quieter - until i go off on a mad tangent.
absolutely just as prone to saying things without realising it sounds filthy (until its been said)

    Shhh.
So basically, you just annoy people because you think you're always right & speak the "truth"?

Believe it or not, I can tell the difference between facts and opinions. What I meant was I don't like lying to people for the sake of being nice if I think the truth is ultimately more important.
Because nobody is always right, the truth is usually subjective & people's feelings are more important than the arrogant belief that you are always right.

While I agree that nobody is always right, there are many things which are objectively true or false. Your last point is not entirely logical but if you mean protecting feelings is more important than proving you are right in a particular instance, I would largely agree.
Generally speaking, people who "tell it like it is", are difficult to get along with for me. I have far more respect for people who have the presence of mind to assess the situation and speak accordingly.

This is something I have started to realise lately and am addressing. I have a tendency to point out the truth on occasions when it is not completely necessary to do so and upset people in the process. Lately, I've begun to recognise times when holding my tongue and smiling is better for everybody. I blame most of this on my total ignorance of subtle social cues however.

I'm the same, dont think that's necessarily a good thing though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,538 ✭✭✭flutterflye

I've met people online before, and the only thing I noticed was that some of the people who seem the most confident, are actually so shy.
Overall, people were pretty much the same though.

I'm the same, only people always seem to expect me to look like a serious librarian or something, instead of a bubbly blond, and are completely shocked when they realise otherwise!
No idea why though. Just because I have opinions and don't idly follow the herd shouldn't mean I should look and act serious.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,030 ✭✭✭✭Chuck Stone

Okay the tron question. If I was tasked with debating the pros and my tron-self the cons then my online self would kick my ass in a debate.

Tron me would be able to process the implications of saying something before saying it while I'd be reacting and saying things like 'Oh yeah? Well you're just a bunch of electrons MR PERFECT!'
