College Placement - Marine Management

This is a tricky one I admit, and hopefully you fellow boaters will see my dilemma!

Since the age of ten I have been boating and involved with the sea in some form or another, currently it's working in a yacht club as a boatman. All the jobs I've had have been out doors and near the water, not stuck in some office (which I've done for a few weeks here and there).

I'm doing a level 8 business course and have to do a 16-20 week placement starting next April. I need to start talking to companies soon, and want to have an idea of who to talk, not facing into this dilemma then!

Basically I would like to do the placement doing any form of marine management that will ideally leave me out doors for at the very least half of every week (realistically any sector, not marine, will do but the out door bit is a must and marine is preferable!).

So if any of you kind folk have any ideas of companies who may be able to offer something like this it would be a huge help! Don't worry if they are hard to get into, I should be able to sort that if they're marine based ;)

Based in dublin, not really up for traveling unless its a perfect opportunity!

Hi alex, Try the RNLI in Airside "Swords" The money might not be great but they might be able to help you out if you help them out. :D

Hadn't thought of them, even though I've done stuff with them before! Was more thinking along the lines of port management, or sailing event management. The former tends to be office based, the later tends to be one man bands not needing anyone else

Is it leisure marine management specifically, or would you consider commercial?

You could approach some of the stevedore's/ships agents in Dublin port. You could be out visiting lot's of different ships, might be cool if you can't find something that you are really interested in. I doubt they are over run with applications for work placement, its not a job that pops into everyones head.

Contact Dun Laoghaire Marina or Poolbeg Marina or Howth Marina or Malahide Marina

Oh ithink id nearly prefer commercial but my image of it is that it's mainly desk work?! Any help with names of some of the agents to speed up the search? If not its grand.

I know people in most of those places and th management is all mainly office based, the lads all do the fuelling, towing etc etc which I do every day in my own job. No real management in that part of it. Really appreciate the help though :)

In essence this is my issue, the management is one man in an office not really needing help, and where they can use help is doing stuff which is like me being in work. The commercial end of it would remove me from that, which I'd love. That's if it's not sitting in an office 9-5!!

The help is greatly appreciated folks :)

I would say with my experience of ships agents in the past, that you would be 60% in the office and 40% visiting ships. That might have changed since my day. I always thought of it as a fast paced job with lots of variety.

Check out the page on this website for a list of Dublin based shipping agents, this website would be the right people to talk about regarding a career in shipping management too.

Cheers for that, a fast paced and varied job sounds good.

DO you think I should contact them about a placement in one of the companies or pick a few form their list of members and apply direct to them?

I would do both, try and speak to somone in the association to see if this is the kind of thing their members do or would consider doing, this might save you time applying to unsuitable organisations. If they are not helpful then you should reach out to everyone on the list.
