    http://www.herald.ie/national-news/hurling-legend-loughnane-in-hospital-with-leukaemia-2806623.html
HURLING legend Ger Loughnane is battling leukaemia.

The retired Clare manager, best known for leading the county to two All-Ireland titles in the Nineties, is undergoing treatment at St James's Hospital after being diagnosed with the illness just two weeks ago.

The famous sportsman, who is a household name to many for his work on RTE's The Sunday Game, will be putting all of his work commitments on hold as he undergoes crucial treatment in order to beat the disease, which is rare among adults.

Loughnane is also the principal of St Aidan's National School in Shannon.

Despite being one of the country's most revered GAA players, he is best known for his work as a manager, leading Clare to their first All-Ireland success for 81 years in 1995.

And in 1997, he repeated their success.

In addition to the prestigious All-Ireland titles under their belt, Clare also won three Munster titles under his leadership.

Loughnane semi-retired from management in 2000 and has since become one of sport's best known personalities for his punditry.

His acid-tongued remarks ensure that his commentary is never far from anyone's mind during a hurling match, making him an irreplaceable force on our screens.

    Invaluable

But he gave up the success of the small screen for a return to managing Galway in 2006, where he was less successful.

After three seasons, the team failed to make it past the All-Ireland quarter final, and he eventually retired for good three years ago

Despite the fact that he hasn't managed Clare for more than a decade, his services are still seen as being invaluable.

Before this year's Division 2 final, he was brought in to give a motivational talk to Clare players after he discovered that some of the younger generation were being bullied by their older counterparts.

Although it is not known what type of leukaemia Loughnane is battling, the most common type in adults are acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).

AML is slightly more common among men than among women, and the risk of getting AML for the average man is about 1 in 250, in comparison to the average woman's risk at approximately 1 in 300.

Several types of treatment may be used in people with AML, and the main treatment for is chemotherapy, but surgery and radiation therapy may be used in special circumstances.

I hope the great man will be OK.:(

Was about to get upset by this comment until I checked your other posts and most are negative at best. Anyone who posts something like you did in a thread about someone suffering from cancer really isn't worth getting upset by. You just deserve pity.

I just got a call from a relative in Clare to tell me there was a piece on Clare FM this morning about Ger Loughnane.
Really sorry to hear this......he has some tough battle ahead..and hopefully he will kick this one into touch :)

How anyone could think it's acceptable to come onto a public board, use (mild) bad language to question someone who has recently been diagnosed with leukaemia I'll never know.

    Melion banned from GAA

Echo all the sentiments, a true hurling man who was never afraid to speak his mind, and stand his ground. If he tackles this as well as he tackled leading Clare to the holy grail then he will be with us for a long time still. Best of luck Ger!

    A legend of the game.
    Hurling needs people like Ger.

Remember what you said at half time in 95 Ger - "We're gonna do it !".

You've got to keep saying that now - Every lover of the game is with you.

One of my most respected figures in the game. An absolute legend who commands the highest level of respect throughout the game, the GAA and the land.

    Hopefully he pulls through.

Sorry if im going off topic slightly but according to Daly in that article, Fr Harry Bowen is also ill at present in which case i would like to offer a speedy recovery to him also as he is also another great Clare hurling man

Ger is an inspiring figure of the GAA. Great attitude and belief when he coached teams. That's what you need, he always had his team in top shape. It was a credit to him.

I remember Anthony Daly saying once that Ger was the type of guy that would say to you that "you were very bad in training tonight",you need to up your game or you will be destroyed" and then when the effort went in the training grounds and then after the game in championship was played, he would say to a player, "you played a blinder, you were unstoppable out there today". Ger was a very funny man and have huge respect for him. Hope he gets well soon.

Rumours of Ger's demise late last night were great exaggerated thankfully.

Ger Loughnane is alive and well and if anything, according to the Clare PRO, getting even better.

Rumours all over Clare this morning that Ger has passed, hopefully not but there was a mention on Today FM about a sad GAA story breaking but they would not confirm anything.

Best Wishes to Ger Loughnane and hope he has a speedy recovery. Why would someone do that on Wikipedia, it's pathetic IMO. Will never trust it again.

Whatever about just editing a Wikipedia page, it was even more reckless by some news outlets to run with the story this morning and it take from random rumours into a more official capacity.

If you're 99.99% confident of running a story about a mans death, you don't run it. Full stop.

Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, so anything on it can be taken with a pinch of salt. (I know of lads who edit pages for fun.) But like Daysha says, news should know better!!

Great to hear that Ger is STILL ALIVE. See that loads of places reported it wrongly.

Make he make a good and full recovery and that he and Cyril 'tis liking throwing nuts at a monkey' Farrell by back on the telly together soon.
