They have released a trailer for it today, and it looks amazing!

Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In “Brave,” a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts.

Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

I'm already more interested in this than Cars 2

Was really looking forward to this when Brenda Chapman was directing but since she left the project last year I'm divided about it. I enjoyed mark andrews short one man band but I would have really liked to have seen Chapmans version seeing as she conceived the story.

THe animation looks great, also definitley a new type of movie for pixar, good to see something original on the way from them considering the amount of sequels it looks like they might be churning out soon.

Looks interesting, if a radical departure from Pixar. Let's hope the horse isn't wise-cracking :P

Reviews for Cars 2 seem to extremely mixed, leaning towards the negative for perhaps the first time in their career (an outright mediocre film as opposed to the above average Cars). While I certainly can't complain when they basically made the most effective second sequel of all time last year, seeing them tackle all new material after a two year break will be welcome :)

I was hoping for a bit more, but it's only a teaser. Looks brilliant though. It'll be interesting to see what Pixar will do with their first female protagonist.

Looks amazing (cg-wise). I just hope there are no embarrassing cultural clichés. Hate those.

Oh just found this on reddit. :pac:

In fairness, I never really understood why the Vikings in HTTYD all had scottish accents apart from the geeky hero. At least this one seems to be in a Scottish-esque kingdom.

They did live in a mythical Island inhabited with dragons though so It didn't really put me off :D

HTTYD is probably my favourite animated film

Here's hoping Brave brings Pixar back on track though. It looks great though

It was because they used some scottish actors :P Quite a few characters had american accents too.

I meant more in terms of animation and theme it seemed similar.

Quite a few characters had American accents badly disguised as Scottish ones. Presumably the island was somewhere near Shrek's swamp.

I guess you're referring to Gerard Butler and Craig Ferguson who are actually Scottish in real life.....and most of the other actors (bar the kids who just talked with american accents iirc) were english... *shrug*

It visually looks good but it doesn't have that Pixar feel to it. Die hard Pixar fans can correct me if I'm wrong.

It certainly doesn't have the Pixar feel, but how long can Pixar keep churning out the same (albeit fantastic) stuff before it gets a bit boring? Kids go to see the movies for the stories and the spectacle, adults tend to go to see how far animation has come. I'll definitely be seeing this, will be interesting to see what the 3D is like on it.

I was a little disappointed they didn't snare Karen Gillan for this actually. ;)

To be honest I don't go to see an animated film just to see the quality of the animation. I go for the story as well. It's all part of the package that makes these Pixar films so good. And another 3D film? From what I've seen already in regards 3D and animations it'd be just as good in 2D.

Pixar sold out with Cars 2 and as a one time massive fan of them new releases don't have the same buzz for me anymore.

Sorry Tipsy but Mr. Lightyear has hung up his spacesuit for good. He's enjoying himself some Spanish totty now.

This looks brilliant, Pixar really ballsed up with cars, its strange that they let it happen but probably good that the got there bad movie out of the way. In years to come surely people will look back on the Piar collection as they do now with the Disney Classics Collection

    Here's a longer clip:

It is weird hearing Kelly McDonald back in Scots mode, after her flawless Texan accent in No Country For Old Men.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

....and her not-so-flawless Irish accent in Boardwalk Empire!

Really reminded me of Disney's Robin Hood:

It looks decent enough, though I think I'd have to see a different trailer before shelling out to see it in the cinema. And was it me or was the animation a bit "off" in parts? (where yer man's dancing around the 1:15 mark?)

You can now get high-res wallpapers of all the main characters, here. I particularly like the one featuring Angus, the horse: the level of detail is amazing, down to the hairs on his muzzle.

A 3rd longer trailer is out:

I'm actually very impressed with Emma Thompson's accent in this. As the only non-Scot in the top line cast, it would have been too easy to overdo it, but I think she's placed it somewhere between Edinburgh and Aberdeen, without going all Taysider on us.

You know what? It just goes to prove how funny Pixar can be when you laugh more during a 30 second clip than you would in the entirety of recent animated movies. And you know that they're not even showing the best bits. Yep, I'm a bit of a Pixar fanboy, who probably chose right to ignore Cars 2 ever existed and didn't even see it.

Wow, this looks great, really looking forward to seeing it. OH is from Scotland and the kids love the accent, so looking forward to watching this with them all. Great cast.

Hmm, first few reviews are in and in general the response is certainly muted: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/brave_2012/

Of course, one cannot judge by a smattering of reviews, and wait to actually see the blasted thing (at least we can guarantee it will be better than Cars 2!). But old critic-friendly Pixar have fallen short of universal praise twice in a row now.

There's so much pressure riding on Pixar because, excluding Cars 1 and 2, each one of their movies has been met with almost universal critical and public acclaim. There's not many movie studios that can say this.

I'm really apprehensive about Brave. I loved every Pixar film up until Cars 2 happened, and it became clear that the corporate side of things were making a push. Plus, with Steve Jobs dead, there's nobody there to protect John Lasseters ideas.

It's precisely because they've set their standards so high that any level of mixed response is so surprising.

But Studio Ghibli have had their fair share of disappointments over the years - I'd argue no true classic since Spirited Away - and that hasn't hurt their standing much at all. I still very much look forward to Brave, but I always find measuring the critical response to Pixar films fascinating.

Lasseter is more than capable of looking after his own interests.

Haven't really cared for what I've seen of this so far, but I'll still see it - although that's mainly due to the fact that I'm curious about Dolby Atmos and will have the opportunity to check it out.

I'd like to believe that, but with Newt being cancelled, and the Sequels that Disney is making him pump out (Cars 2, Monsters Inc 2), I find it doubtful.

From what I understand, Jobs was always the big mouth making sure Lasseter was given the creative control he needed.

Lasseter is one of the most powerful people in the mouse house. Don't let his cuddly persona throw you. His reputation is that of an individual who is every bit as determined and uncompromising when it comes to his work as Jobs was. This is a man who gets his own way.

I was reading the John Carter thread earlier, where a poster expressed the opinion that the Marketing team should have been shot. If that's the case then Andrew Stanton should be first up against the wall. Andrew - a Pixar alumnus and first time feature director - dismissed the concerns and ideas of Disney's senior marketers and basically engineered every aspect of the campaign himself. It was of course a disaster. It's an example of how much sway the Pixar team have within Iger's Disney and Mark is nothing compared to the 800 pound gorilla that is Lasseter.

I don't believe that for second. The source for that story was some anonymous marketing insider at Disney, i.e. somebody trying to save their job. I'm sure Stanton had input into the early marketing as many directors do, but there's no way he engineered the whole campaign. It would be absolutely unheard of for a director to have that kind of control over the marketing.

I'm just glad they're going back to an original premise, something we've not had since Up. I love Pixar, but I'm a little concerned about the trend of sequels we're seeing. Three in four years is excessive. I was excited about the recently announced The Good Dinosaur, I'd much rather have that next year than Monsters University I have to say.

Three sequels in 4 years? I can only think of Cars 2 and Toy Story 3. What is the third? I'm assuming you're referring to Toy Story 2 being rereleased before the launch of Toy Story 3?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 30,019 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

Toy Story 3, Cars 2 and Monsters University (technically a prequel).

Can't say I'm all that inspired by the idea of Monsters University. Monsters Inc. is a very pleasant little film, although definitely lingering around the lower middle of the Pixar pantheon. If it wasn't for the dynamic between Boo and the monsters, it would have been much less engaging. I'll, naturally, wait and see what they do with it, but Mike & Sully aren't really characters I want to see more of.

I think The Incredibles is the only Pixar sequel I'd really, really like to see, but Brad Bird has said he won't make it unless he feels he has ideas that are worthy of it. Which is actually kind of nice to hear.

I think The Incredibles is Pixars most underrated movie, its also one of the best superhero films ever made, end of story.
