So will we see reductions in ticket prices?

Anyone know if it will apply to cinema goodies?

WOAH we're getting a price REDUCTION? We're still in Ireland, right? ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,988 ✭✭✭✭kippy

I was under the impression that this reduction only applied to food and I wasnt sure if Cinemas were covered under this change.......
I didnt think they were to be honest.

    EDIT:
Apologies. it appears it does apply to cinemas as well.

There should be some reductions but it will be interesting to see if they are passed onto the consumer. Time for a name and shame thread me thinks.......

A VAT reduction that maybe passed on to the consumer.

It is for tourists in the main.

Many food products are already at a 0% rate of VAT as are Children's clothes and educational services.

Cinema Tickets are included in the new reduction according to RTÉ's This Week.

I'll believe it when I see it. The cinemas will pocket the extra cash just as retailers pocketed the last VAT reduction.

It equates to a rather insignificant amount though once the distributors get their cut, probably in the region of 10-20c (obviously dependent upon initial cost and percentage terms). Still, better in our pockets than theirs but I would be shocked if we see a change in price.

I went to book tickets there in the Gate cinema Cork for tonight. Still €8. No reduction on the website anyway.

Still €8 is good nearly €10 in Dublin over ten euro in some cinemas

Looks like Omniplex/Savoy/Screen are the first to reduce prices.

I'd say the cinema near me will reduce the price a week after the new harry potter movie comes out.

Fair play to them, so this can be a name and celebrate thread too!

Fair play to them. It's not exactly Earth shattering price reductions but it's a good will gesture to pass on the savings. I'd nearly consider going back to the Omniplex in Cork if only it
    a) didn't stink of old sweat and musty popcorn
    b) had air con to control the temperature. It's an ice-box in there sometimes.

From what I can see Movies at Dundrum havent budged.

Went to see Bridesmaids there last week, booked online at 9.90 per person. This week, transformers at approx the same time, in the same screen is still 9.90 per person.... shame

    IMC have dropped their prices.

    http://www.imccinemas.ie/cinema_info.asp

I usually just go on student tuesday when the price was €4.50

It's now €4.30, so its dropped by 20 cent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,608 ✭✭✭irish_stevo815

Wait a second, my closest Omniplex was charging €8.50 for an adult the last time I checked. That press release says they were charging €9.00 and reduced to €8.60. Does this give my Omniplex an excuse to put up their price by 10c???

I have an unlimited card so it does'nt affect me though.

I'd say they'll drop their prices a week or two after the release of the Deathly Hallows PII.

We should really boycott the cinemas for a month. Something we rarely do in this country except back in 1880.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,439 ✭✭✭Skinfull

    No reduction from cineworld :(

    *Not that I expected one

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,618 ✭✭✭baldbear

The Eye Galway was €9.50 last night. Fairly sure they havn't changed their prices. Typical ireland....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

I went to Transformers 3D at Vue (4:40 show) on Friday. According to their pricing:

    Show before 5pm = €9.90.
    3D glasses = €2.50.
    That's €12.40

    I was charged €13.05.

    Hmmm....

The first cinema wasn't open in the country til the 1900's.

Does anyone know if the UCI has changed their prices?

Did we not all agree we were not gonna give Michael Bay another cent?!

    Couldn't have been just me?

    :D

Sligo cinema hasn't lowered prices AFAIK... although went for lunch and there was a nice little note on the front of my menu saying something along the lines of prices indicated did not include the new VAT reduction but your bill will. Thought it was nice!

    Yep it was in Tipperary.

Hoping that is a joke! (I was talking about the Land war and Captain Boycott).

Ha, it was Clonmel i was on about :D!

Went to Mahon Point at the weekend to see Transformers (3D) and it cost €8.60 each. I was a bit surprised as we werent charged the extra 2 quid for 3D

So it seems the big chain cinemas have sneakily raised their prices! Typical, I swear I'm not giving Cineworld another cent.

I'll keep going to Vue though, it's really near my house :pac:

I saw Transformers at 10am on Wednesday and I think I paid about 9 quid (for a student ticket!) So expensive, but so, so convenient....

I don't know about this Transformers movie. I am dead set against going to see it, after the second one.

It's good, but not €9 good. Miles better than the second one though.

Convenience, propping up rip off Ireland for over 10 years! :D

In fairness, if I lived beside a cinema I'd probably be the same. But seeing as I have a choice, I'll see who passes on the savings before making my next trip :D

As another poster said, cinema in Sligo did not reduce their price. Will not be going again anytime soon. I know it's only a small amount. But the amount of people that were there on Friday night - a tidy profit for the owners. Oh that makes me so mad. Rip of Ireland is alive and well.

Was checking prices online there for Storm Cinema in Waterford and it seems they have no reduced their prices at all. Same for all the Storm chain from looks of it.

    Still €9.80 after 5pm and €7.80 before 5pm.

Was in the Screen D'olier Street tonight and they've passed on the reduction. Happy days :)

So I emailed Vue Liffey Valley about this issue and here is their reply:

    Thank you for your email.
Please be advised that there has not been reduction of ticket prices at the Vue Dublin due to VAT, however there will be not be an increase in ticket price for the Vue Dublin in this fiscal year.
    Kind Regards,
    Tom

    Not good enough VUE:mad:

I think VUE are one of the most expensive out there as well.

Haven't gone to Vue Cinema since Toy Story 3 was out. Basically the price difference between their place and Dundrum was around the 6 euro mark. I asked why and they replied saying:

"Please be advised that our pricing structure is set at a fair yet competitive rate against other entertainment venues in the local area, I am sorry you believe the price of our tickets is to high however I can confirm that discount will be received when visiting Monday-Thursday before 17:00."

So that was that. Never going back there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,159 ✭✭✭✭phasers

a fair yet competitive rate against other entertainment venues in the local area

    Yeah, all zero of them.
