Your perfect Distance

    What is your perfect distance? The distance where you lay up to on a par 5 because you just feel perfectly comfortable from there etc...

    For me it's 115 yards. That just leaves me with a perfect full sandwedge. Anything between 115 to chipping range I completely strugge with. No consistency at all with half shots.

    What about everyone else?

    Played back 9 at carlow there today, and was flying on the par 4s, drives were going great for me so it was a 9 iron or PW onto the greens, my putting was a little off but very happy with my drives and approach shots, my chips fro close range are normally pretty good, its just putting it altogether and staying away from 7s and 8s is the key :D

    120 yards PW or 100 yards for 52* wedge. Confident I can control line and distance on both those clubs more than any.

    Inside 6 inches with a putter...;)

    I'm sure Rory would hit his PW much further than 120 yards. He isn't Fred Funk :rolleyes:

    He can hit every club at least 20 yards longer if needs be but that is his yardage for his PW

    I have my doubts. Proof?

    Edit: Says 130 here which is much more realistic than what you said

    Oh holy God, it begins yet again.............. the 'I hit my SW 150 yards' thread. I swear I swear, just ask anyone who plays with me..........:(:(

    I know a few people that hit a sand wedge 115 yards, they use the hurlers grip though.

    Anyway back on topic, 80 meters for me leaves a full 52 degree.

    I said 115, not 150. Which i thought would be a pretty common distance for a decent player using a sandwedge :confused: I am a low handicapper if that makes it better for you. I only hit the driver 235-240 though.

    Can it go back on topic now please? Rather than having you not believing that someone can hit a common distance with a wedge.

    115 yards with a standard 52 deg SW is not long by any means,as for Rory Mc Ilroy hitting his Pw 130 yards,thats bull.
    I hit my Pw 140 and I am not long.

    Pw = 48
    Gw = 52
    Sw = 56
    Lw =60

    as standard dumbass .......................

    115 yards with a standard 56 deg SW is not that long ,as you said any decent golfer will hit it that length or more.
    Perhaps the op has too much loft on his clubs hence his username.

    Just in case you think I am pulling numbers out of my arse the numbers mentioned above are just gaped evenly from a standard Pw. The most popular loft for a Sw is actually 54* with 39.8% of tour players using that loft.

    I actually have a 54 Deg SW myself come to think of it.;)

    OK Yeah that was pretty cheap sorry ;) It's just that 52* wedges come with 8* bounce usually which is not optimum for sand play in Ireland 10* bounce is where you want to be unless you have a tight lie 12* preferable . Too much weather in Ireland unless you are extreemly skilled IMHO.

    in case theres any arguments im with killbill...the 6-9 inch putt,im pretty confident from this range...cant say its 100% success though:o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,239 ✭✭✭mag

    i hit my 56deg 90yds. in order to hit it 115 i would need to be swinging very hard, i wouldnt see any point in that with a club where accuracy is paramount. a smooth pw down the grip would be 115 for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,450 ✭✭✭Batesy

    I hit my 8 iron from 115 yards.

    I'm not proud.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 129 ✭✭Figo69

    Mine would be a 80yard knockdown shot everytime.

    115 yarder with a Sandwedge...:eek::eek::eek:

    All my shots are either half or 3/4 swing so i never go for the full shot..pointless in my opinon as accuracy and control outweights everything in the the short game. :)

    108-110, full 56* wedge. Anything inside 75 and I'm a bit hit and miss...mainly due to lack of practice

    If it works for you don't be ashamed. No point hitting a 9 or PW and leaving it short every time.

    56deg full = 108-110yards :eek::eek::eek::eek:

    56deg half or 3/4 swing = 55 -80 yards

    Yes, 108-110...if you don't believe me I'd be happy to prove it. I play off low single
    figures so I hit the ball pretty solid. I do need to sort out my half shots though.

    Fair play to you sir...no arguments from me. Just never seen that kind of shot with a sw.

    Not being a smart ass but surely if one was to be a single handicapper, he or she would need a solid short game. You must tell me your secret.:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,513 ✭✭✭BrianD3

    I hit a full 56 degree wedge from 100 metres, so 109 yards. If I really murder it I can hit it 115 yards.

    Assuming you are not thinning shots or significantly delofting the club, this is long hitting. I'd say no more than 10 male members in my club of several hundred can do this. Handicaps of this 10 would range from +1 to 16.

    But it is quite puzzling that someone who hits a 56 degree wedge 115 yards hits their driver "only" 235-240.

    Very puzzling indeed, isn't it? He must be using a 15 degree driver or something

    Well relative to a 10 handicap or something like that my short game would probably be very good, but for my handicap it's pretty poor

    54 degree wedge 80yards and 100yards when boned.

    A 90M shot with a smooth 54 degree wedge. Only recently my favourite shot but put me 100
    away and i struggle. This game is a serious pain sometimes.

    I should have perhaps said that both those distances were carry. The driver would roll out depending on the ground conditions.

    20 handicap, following full distances:

    56 degree SW-60 yards to front edge
    52 degree GW-85-90 yards to front edge
    48 degree PW-100-110 yards front edge

    Most comfortable hitting 8 iron though from about 140 yards front edge so just need to learn how to drive the ball like Bubba Watson and should be hitting 8 iron 2nd shot on most normal par 5's :D

    105 yards for me. Full wedge

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 447 ✭✭NoelAPM

    I'd say my perfect distance would be 140 for my 9 iron. I find a wedge very short and slightly awkward at times.

    I'm surprised to hear how far mcIroy hits a wedge. I could have swore I seen him hit a 6 iron 200 yards. Beast.

    85-90 yards for a good sw.
    100 for my 52 degree.
    110 for my pw

    some interesting yardages and arguments. I started the year at 14 (pretty normal as I do not play regularly from Sept to Jan / Feb and I am now back down to my normal 8 and I can hit my SW 120ish on a still day. Each club goes up by about 10 yards.

    As for McIlroy hitting these distances I doubt it. Look at the 10th of his final round at US Open. Correct me if I am wrong but it is 216 yards I think and he hit his 8 iron 220 / 225 yards to catch the slope. I would doubt his wedges drop of by nearly 100 yards to be honest but I stand to be corrected.
