    hi,

First time posting here so be nice,

have a 60hp evinrude that I got from an uncle who just doesn't use it anymore. nice engine 1991 one I believe. The thing is the carbs are in need of cleaning as the engine doesn't idle to easy and it jumps at WOT.

Contacted a local service shop (cowboy inc from here on in ) and they said that they would clean them for €120 !!!! Is it just me or is this extreme.......??

can someone tell me where to get these kits in Ireland? and if so roughly how much am i looking at?
Also can anyone recommend a solution to let them sit in ovcernight to break down the gunk that's in them???

I've a 30 hp yahama at the moment which only has one carb which has given me very little trouble over the years.....
the 3 on this one are a bit different but still surely it's not rocket science...

No way am I going to pay Cowboy Inc €120 for a simple enough carb cleaning or am I being too rash here???

P.s. am not going to mention the shop so don't ask :D

Hi breghall and welcome,, if you just want it cleaned find a garage with an ultrasonic bath that will bring it up like new. But if the engine is just running rough you could try putting some "fuel system treatment" in your fuel and run the engine I use starbrite startron but there are lots out there, this will dissolve gum and varnish in the carburator.
If the engine has been laid up for awhile you might as well put it in for a full service as the rubbers in the carb can dry out and become brittle and the float can stick in the chamber, you should also change the impeller and the gear oil.
If you are handy with your hands you should have no problem doing these jobs yourself just pick up a workshop manual. If you know your engine number this might help http://www.crowleymarine.com/johnson-evinrude/parts/48026.cfm
    Best of luck with it.

I think the going rate for a mechanic is €50-100 per hour and if you say it's for a boat it goes up again :D so for 3 carbs thats not too bad and if it includes rebuild kits it's very good.

Find your engine number and you should get them here. http://epc.brp.com/Index.aspx?lang=E&s1=c0066319-e4c1-4ceb-b69c-b97896170296
Or give these guys a call and they should get it in for you http://www.marineparts.ie/

It looks like the one kit will work on a number of engines so you should have no problem picking one up.
