Some players just seem to fade off the scene.

For example Aidan Kearney and Liam Lawlor of Waterford..

Just wondering does anybody know what became of this lot or of any others?!

Both on the Waterford panel if I'm not mistaken.

Limerick have had a few players like that- Mike Fitzgerald had a great season in 2007, scored a goal against Tipp in the first replay that started the comeback. Faded away since...wasn't even starting for Doon last weekend.

Donncha Sheehan...but that's because he was never good enough really. Good club hurler but never really made an impact the couple of times he was on the intercounty team.

Mark Keane...one of the best free-takers I've ever seen. I suppose he didn't contribute enough from open play but technically he should be in his prime around now.

Did Declan Fanning retire?? And Ger O'Grady from Clare?? And where are Pat Kerwick and Redser these days?

Galway always seemed to have players who seemed to disappear...Kerrill Wade (or however you spell it), Mark Kerins, David Tierney, Farragher for a while...

Pat Kirby was always a player that I thought would be brilliant for Limerick. He was on teh 21's that won the all Irelands but never made it at senior.

Mike Fitz got a few desperate injuries Fireball if I remember. Denis Moloney had a few great games but never really made it. Still can though

Plenty of Galway Hurling players could be put on that list.

Derek Hardiman who starred on the Galway 2005 All Ireland Final team and was named an All star is one I recall. Disappeared shortly after it. Plenty of young players like Kerril Wade disappeared quickly after making the step up from underage.

With regards Galway football, John Divilly who was centre back on the 1998 All Ireland winning team was one who disappeared soon after. He was only mid twenties at most. Nicky Joyce is one in recent times who tends to just disappear a lot.

What about the Healy fella that scored a hat-trick against Kilkenny in an AI semi final a few years ago there and havent heard much of him since

Ah yes Niaill Healy, he was knocking about up until this year when he left the panel. They spent too much time trying to make him more physical and in the process of it he lost the one attribute that made him, his pace.

Cloonan didn't exactly disappear; he played for Galway since '97, AI final '01, wasn't on panel in '05 (disagreement maybe, could have really done with him then), came on as sub. in '06 v KK. Think that was it, had a lot of back trouble. Similarly, Murray played in the '01 and '05 finals, was on the panel until 2 years ago, came on as sub v KK in Tullamore, but was sent off nearly immediately and didn't figure much under McIntyre after that. Left panel last year. Niall Healy was on panel until earlier this year. Derek Hardiman drifted away after '06 I think. David Tierney played in '01 and '05 finals, not much after. The one thing all aforementioned, bar Cloonan, didn't have was consistency.

Don't think John Concannon played Senior football for Galway. Great talent at underage, now a Minor selector with the Bomb. (Not a good omen). Divilly wasn't the greatest no. 6 and I don't think O'Mahony trusted him totally. Later joined Kildare where he worked. Now managing his native Kilkerrin. Yes, Nicky does disappear a bit unfortunately!

That guy that was Meath captain for a while he played wing-back and in the forwards aswell, was a decent player, his name completly gone out of my head?

    Caoimhin King??
Best position was wing back, think they tried him in the forwards at one time too.. Was he Meath captain??

Tommy Walsh - Kerry - Playing in Oz
Conor Mortimer - Mayo - Injury problems
    Frankie Dolan - Roscommon

Yes Declan retired after last years win, Pat Kerwick has been injured for over 12months but has in the last few weeks returned to full training, Redser as luvable and all as he is just wasnt what you would call county material, mentally anyway.

I just wondered where Fanning had gone. I don't think Kerwick is good enough to get in your team atm.....Redser was funny, was it just my imagination or did he and Kevin Tobin have a fight in 2007? Maybe that was just wishful thinking on my part...

Another Tipp player I just remembered that I always wondered about....Diarmuid Fitzgerald?? I used to rate him quite a lot but he disappeared then.

    Yes!

Yes he was captain in a few games that I saw him play, decent player, what happend to him?

Kenneth Burke from galway was another underage star who never really made it at Senior. He did captain the U-21 to AI victory in 2005, but never developed into the Senior player he had promised to be at minor.

if i am correct, he played last year. I think he is/was studying in England/Scotland, remember seeing his name in a Sigerson programme with one of the British teams at one time (Liverpool or Edinburgh probably), i think it was him. Maybe he might of had to get a job outside the country, not too sure. I am sure some of our Royal associates will fill us in.

mcdonald played intercounty for over a decade with mayo, played in 3 all ireland finals (would have been 4 but he missed the 1996 final), he is 36 now

Still playing. Played in the full back line throughout the league and could play on Saturday.

A Meath player who unfortunately disappeared from the intercounty scene was Daithi Regan. Was a very handy player in the mid 2000s and a very good free taker but got a serious injury and never made it back to the panel.

he had a very good year for Roscrea last year. was played corner forward for a while with Tipp which really didnt suit him as he is an out and out back man.
i still think he is good enough to make the Tipp panel. his as every bit as good as David Young anyway. anytime Iv seen Fitzgerald hurl with Roscrea his always been top notch.

I think injuries have more or less finished his inter-county career, excellent player in his day though.

As for Vaughan I always thought he was over rated

Not sure about Aidan, but Lawlor has spent this season with 2 bad injuries and should be back soon.

What about Mark Foley that played for Cork in the early 90's . I seem to remember he was a bit of a scoring machine but I think he only ever made a handful of appearances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,030 ✭✭✭jpb1974

    Nigel Higgins-Wexford

If my memory serves me correctly he had to put work commitments ahead of inter-county hurling. The two could not co-exist.

    http://www.hoganstand.com/ArticleForm.aspx?ID=80248

An extract from an Indo article a few years back -
Remarkably, the Wexford skipper is involved in no less than four businesses - haulage, importing, a stud farm and a shop. He got his latest venture - a ladies' boutique in Enniscorthy run by his girlfriend Grace Kelly - off the ground just a few days prior to Wexford's narrow Leinster semi-final victory over Dublin at Nowlan Park earlier this month.
Given his hectic lifestyle, it's no surprise that the player decided two years ago that he would have to pack in inter-county hurling. Having shown plenty of promise that year, he found it difficult to turn his back, but he always hoped that it would be a temporary arrangement.

As another poster mentioned Lawlor has been unlucky with injuries.

Aidan Kearney suffered from illness and injuries for the last few years which have curtailed his intercounty career. Seemingly on the way back now and he is still on the panel. Rumours of disagreement with Davy too but all a load of bull

Huge loss to the Clare backline, one of the few top quality backs we had.

    Declan Quill-Kerry

Am struggling to remember the top two. When did they play?

Declan Quill has a couple of All-Irelands with Kerry, was on the panel for years. Always ended up scoring loads in the league but management never really fancied him for the championship. Retired a few seasons ago.

And one of my own - The Clare hurler Eamonn O' Flaherty (I think?). He played with a completely bare hurley at the start of the last decade but never heard much of him since.

More of a personality clash with Conor Counihan by all accounts. He withdrew from the panel last year.

MOTM in the '90 ''donkeys dont win derbies'' munster final, destroyed Tipp, think he scored something redic like 3-6, but it was a flash in the pan he was no where near that calibre of a hurler. It seemed Bab's little brainfart affected Foley more than most and he shut him up with a match winning performance.

Whatever happened to Johnny Crowley for Kerry? For a while he seemed a lethal goal scorer and then disappeared from the team.
I don't think he was on the team again after the 2004 A.I. Final.

he scored 4 goals and no points that 2004 season

Enda Flannery i think is the hurler your thinking of. From Whitegate if im not mistaken. Played with a really small hurley for an inter-county player and with no grip.

He wasnt much of a hurler tbh, a tough man he marked Eugene Cloonan in the '96 Minor all-ireland and wore timber off him both days! Nicky gave him a run senior but then Philip Maher came on the scene and Maher had an awfull lot more hurling ability, still think if Maher hadnt done hes cruicate in 2002 he could have been one of the best FB's of the modern era he was that good.

Declan Quill was top scorer in the league for Kerry 2/3 years in a row but never got a real chance in the championship. He was Kerry captain for a wile during 2003.

A few others from Kerry Bingo O Driscoll played during the 90's in the half forward line won an Under 21 medal in 1990 and Munster in 96 played with New York after where he was and still is one of the top players. His club mate and cosin Gene Farrell was another around the same time was the Gooch of his day.

2004 was his last year, he had been on the panel for almost 10 years. A very underrated player if you ask me, was almost Man of the Match in the 2004 final won evey ball that day and set up alot of scores

Conrad Murphy could have been one of Corks All-time greats.Broke his leg and moved to Oz.back now playing with Clonakilty.

Fitz played in the league final two years ago and was destroyed and before hand played in the league mauling at the hands of Kilkenny the same year with the same result although i suppose there was more than him bad that day that are still around the panel. He was a good minor and under 21 player and looked promising for a long time but didnt quite step up to the next level like for example, Conor O'Mahony.
