Belgrano vs. River Plate

This should be a great watch. I heard that its impossible to get tickets for this match and the queue for the tickets in River plate has resulted in heat exhaustion and people being rushed to hospital (the line was that big)

    Read up here
A bad dream come true is what River Plate’s fans are feeling as the team coached by Juan José López will play the first leg of the “Promoción” play-offs against B Nacional division team Belgrano in Córdoba province.

River Plate arrived to the current situation after four years of misery both financial and football wise, plus having just finished fourth from bottom in the relegation table.

Rematch will be played on Sunday at River’s El Monumental stadium, when the future of these sides will be decided. In case of a tie on the overall aggregated score, River Plate will remain at Premiere Division, as the powerhouse has what’s been called “sportive advantage” for being a first division side.

River Plate, the globally recognised name with the iconic strip, is the most successful side in Argentine football history with 33 titles, but tonight will be facing its most dramatic and shameful moment of its 110 year of history.

Since the era of professionalism began in 1931, just three clubs have never dropped to the Primera B Nacional division: Independiente, Boca Juniors and River Plate.

Now there is a very real prospect of that list being cut to two.

Due to the complex method of calculating relegation in Argentina - based on a 3-year, points per game ratio – River have known for a while that this season was going to be tough for them, but with a side capable of challenging near the top of the table at the beginning of the Clausura, they lacked fight or passion when faced with the reality of the relegation play-off, and their form disappeared.

It was a double blow for River, whose points total in the 2010-11 campaign had been sufficient to qualify them for the Copa Sudamericana next season, this place was revoked by the Argentine Football Association (AFA) due to their involvement in the relegation playoffs.

Contrary to River Plate’s psychological depression, Belgrano enjoy a positive mindset as they arrived to the playoffs after performing a terrific comeback. When current head-coach Ricardo Zielinski took over, they were 13 points off of the promoción but rocketed to third due to his tightening of a leaky defence. Similarly credited should be playmaker Franco Vásquez and striker César Pereyra, who both attribute their success to their new manager.

    Probable Lineups

Belgrano: Juan Carlos Olave; Gastón Turus, Luciano Lollo, Claudio Pérez, Cristin Tavio; César Mansanelli, Guillermo Farré, Ribair Rodríguez, Juan Maldonado; Franco Vázquez, César Pereyra. Coach: Ricardo Zielinski.

River: Juan Pablo Carrizo; Jonatan Maidana, Alexis Ferrero, Adalberto Román, Juan Manuel Díaz; Paulo Ferrari, Matías Almeyda, Carlos Arano; Erik Lamela; Mariano Pavone, Leandro Caruso (or Mauro Díaz). Coach: Juan José López.

They showed people being carried from the crowd on the news earlier. Mad lines to get tickets. Should be fun to watch tonight.

It's designed to stop the big teams from being relegated because of one bad season.

Wasn't the system brought in specifically to prevent River Plate being relegated?

Yep in 1981. It would be quite ironic that this ruler would be the rule to see them relegated to night.

Looks like it will continue. F*ck me, 2 lunatics in balaclavas coming right up to the River player shouting at him. Lucky his intention wasn't to attack him.

    The diving is fantastic :D

River couldn't score if their life depended on it (which it very might well).

You have to go back to the 26th of March to find the last time River have scored 2 or more goals in a match

They are awful in front of goals :(

    How did Lamela play?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,557 ✭✭✭bamboozling

What a fúcking bit of lunacy that was. 69 minutes of a second half, about 10 maniacs from River enter the field trying to tell their players to get their arses in gear and probably trying to get the match called off.

It was funny when the commissioner said to the ref; 'The police will come and we will finish this match.' :D

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,557 ✭✭✭bamboozling

    How did Lamela play?

Not bad but Belgrano closed him down every time he got the ball. The dogs on the street knew that Lamela was River's only hope today..

I've been to a match at the River Plate stadium.

Intense atmosphere. Even in a realatively unimportant game.

Still not sure how their league system works though. Can anyone explain it in simple English?

Let's hope RP pull something out of the bag in the return match, if only so we can get a headline like:

    Belgrano sunk by rising River.

What I found bizarre about it is that the hoodies ran on, attacked the players, no security, no guards no army, no nothing! Walk back off the pitch after having their "say" and climbing up that 20-30' fence and back into the crowd. How in the hell was that allowed to happen?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

Just seen some highlights this morning, them south Americans can be so passionate about football and the fans that ended up on the pitch we're scary to see just how easy it was to do so.

Return leg should be interesting to say the very least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,710 ✭✭✭✭Paully D

I've got to say, I really admire the fans passion.

The English game has died on its arse a long time ago, atmospheres for the most part are gone. Thankfully some countries still have it.

Yeah. I really miss the days when you could run onto the pitch and when giving a player a kicking was considered fair game.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,652 ✭✭✭I am pie

River's goose is cooked here, they haven't a hope of scroing 2 goals against a team that might be set up to stop them scoring. It's too late in the day for that eejit Lopez to change the team and go on the attack in the 2nd leg. He hasn't a notion. Lamela can't do it alone.

Saw them on argie tv when i was out there in April, after loosing to Godoy they have sank without a trace. I wouldn't be overly surprised if suddenly the rules changes to keep them up. Remember there is an election over there in October. Would be a typically populist move by the govt out there to step in, keep them up and win a shedload of votes !

The players are mercenaries and the majority don't respect or care about the clubs they play for or fans. At least they know they won't get away with not putting the effort in over there.

Baffling. So you have no problem with fans running onto a pitch and attacking players. I thought we'd grown up as a society. I guess some haven't.

Will the return game be shown anywhere in the big pubs in Dublin (Woolshed, Murrays,...) ?

I checked the Woolshed website and it doesn't say they'll be showing it. Would love to go to the pub to watch this.
