Hello. I got my bloods done and everything was fine except for my cholesterol. My hdl is 0.76, ldl is 4.25, trig is 1.25 (okayish i think?) and total is 5.6. I am about a stone and a half overweight, male, 22. How poor would those results be considered? I am in the process of losing the excess weight which I accumulated through unhealthy living at college and I hope this will positively impact on my cholesterol levels. I am aware of the general rules of nutrition for losing weight/maintaining a healthy weight and i am aware of what foods should be just generally avoided. But are there any foods whose consumption impacts positively on cholesterol levels. thanks :)

Just so we're on the right page - can you tell me what foods you think you should avoid, particularly with regard to improving your weight/cholestorol levels? The reason I ask is just in case you're mistaken.

    Yeah no problem.
Well firstly, no fizzy drinks (or any drinks other than water really) on a regular basis.
No chocolate, crisps, sweets, cakes, biscuits, donuts, sugary yogurts, peanuts, cereal bars.
No pizza, baguettes, chipper food or other takeaways.
No white bread or white pasta. (I rarely ever eat rice)
No potato wedges, croquettes, potato waffles etc.
No breakfast cereals, apart from porridge, shredded wheat and weetabix.
No sausages, rashers, beef burgers or any obviously unhealthy meat?
Preferably small amounts of brown bread ie. 2 or 3 slices a day?
Not too much spuds, and preferably unmashed as mashing destroys the cell walls, making you feel less full and causes a large insulin spike leading to storing fat?..
    Not too much wholegrain pasta.
Lots of vegetables with dinner and eat fish as the choice of meat as often as possible.

So..that's my (supposed) understanding of proper nutrition for weight-loss at an objective level and I am gradually assimilating them into my diet.

I am wondering if there are any foods which can accompany this to bring down cholesterol? I heard before that cranberry juice is linked to lowering cholesterol, but I'd imagine the benefits from drinking a lot would be outweighed by the fact it would cause you to put on weight! Is real butter or "low low" better for cholesterol? Any particular vegetables good for it? Think I heard onions were? thanks

its more to do with the partical size of the LDL which you should ask your doctor to check

at 22 I wouldnt stress about it but I would make necessary changes now, which you seem to be doing... HDL can be increased by plenty exercise and LDL can be reduced by reducing / avoiding many of the foods you listed above..
